I was surprised that PC world (it was an emergency Job that needed doing!) where I got a cheap Mac from asked if I wanted extended warranty. The cost turned out to be almost 50% of the computer itself. I declined as I for one don’t think they are value for money.

Do you buy them or think they are a rip off?

They are a rip-off, but I have occasionally taken one out if there has been some sort of offer on. What gets me is when they try to sell you one on low-cost goods such as a cheap video.

It depends what the goods are and what value they are worth. I once bought a cheap monitor from PC world and they broke their backs trying to flog me warranty which was almost as much as the monitor. I told them that if it went wrong then I'll just buy another.

I did on my last computer - my aunt paid for it.
this one - no - when i do the college course (or rather as sson as i learn) i'll rip out the "gubbins" of this one and put in a much better HDD, more RAM, and up the processor.

I think the only other thing we have ever had was a VCR back in 1996. We never used it though!

It can be worth it sometimes, though.

I once bought a couple of AA batteries rom Curry's and paid £95 for the extra month's warranty on them.

Boy, was I glad did! They went flat after FOUR WEEKS of average alarm-clock wear and when I took them back they replaced them without question. Prompt.

Service with a smile, I say: or was it a laugh?

Bought 2 over the years, both from Comet. One, for a Dyson, which I claimed on and they replaced all the internal bits first time and then major overhaul when it went again. (Won't buy Dyson again when I saw the number waiting for repair.) Second warranty was on a VCR, I never claimed and got the full refund 3 years later. So they do work, sometimes, but I'd not buy an extended warranty again unless for an expensive item.

could be wrong but dont companys make most of their profit through extended warranties etc.??

They are a complete skank in my opinion how often is it you by a good quality item and it need repairing?i cant think of anything ive had to have repaires for many years.

I know someone, ( I cant name them for obvious reasons ) who works in a department of a major high street retailer. That persons department is responsible for extented warranties.

That person will only buy extended warranties on goods under £100 as they get immediate replacement. But said person wont have any other type of cover.

Enough said

Phew, got right through that and didnt mention Sallys name once

I once bought the warranty on a pc. It was delivered and the same evening before we had even unpacked it was stolen. I went back to the shop and was provided with another. Although they were understandably funny with me. Anyway about a week later all mine and my husbands bank cards etc were found outside the same store early one morning. Turns out it was something to do with the delivery men!

Never have and wouldn't.

The prices they quote are extortionate. You are covered for the first year anyway. Put the amount of money you would have spent on the warranty into a savings account and use if necessary for a repair.

I've walked out of comet too. Waiting to buy a couple of printer cartridges (expensive from there too but it was the nearest late-opening place). Decided to drive to Meadowhall for them when the staff ignored me and went straight to the bloke who'd walked in after me but happened to be browsing wide screen TVs.

Anyway back on-topic, I once had a salesman in Currys telling me after I had decided to but a new stereo that "these things don't last like they used to" in an attempt to flog me the warranty. Boy was he disappointed when I told him that if it was that poorly-made I'd changed my mind and didn't want to buy the item anymore!

PC World actually, I've found quite good. The couple of times I've bought from there (if you know what you're looking for and haggle, they're not as bad as many suggest IMO) a simple, firm, "no thanks" was enough to dissuade them from pursuing the warranty issue even further.

I think they are a rip-off. It doesn't matter what length "warranty" goods come with... legally they have to last for a reasonable time. My sister bought a stereo system from one of the top high street stores, and it came with a free one year warranty. The store tried to sell her an extended warranty but she declined because she knew her legal rights. When it got a fault after 18 months they tried to refuse to repair it, but she pursued her rights and they eventually repaired it for her as it hadn't lasted a "reasonable" time.

My mum's daft, and several years ago bought my little sister a laptop for her to take to Uni with her, from Tiny computers (remember them??) Anyway, she took out the extended warranty which protected the puter against theft, damage, faults, and anything else that could go wrong. The warranty cost almost as much as the laptop again.
Then my sister's laptop broke, but Tiny had gone bust. However, it said on the warranty that it would still be honoured by the take over company. So my mum went to them, cant remember who they were - Time or PC World or something - and they just laughed at her and said "sorry, not our problem."
So in my humble opinion, warranties are a complete waste of time and money. Save your extra money and use it to buy a big flat stick with a nail in the end to hit the smarmy salesperson round the face with when they try and sell you anything extended or guaranteed etc. ;)

lol. Yeah, she knows i don't mean it!! She's far too soft for her own good though, and my little sister kind of plays her for it, which bugs me a bit. But what can you do?
