Some recent statistics have revealed that Sheffield is one of the most expensive places to swim in Yorkshire.

Surely with the recent attention to obesity you would think the authorities would be doing all they can to keep the prices more reasonable.

Yes, it is expensive to swim in Sheffield. It averages around £3 for a session with places like Ponds Forge charging considerably more, I believe - plus you have to pay to park.

Yep its very dear to swim... It's alright for me though, I'm a member of the gym so I get it all for free :)

It costs me 2.70 for an off-peak lane swim at Hillsborough Leisure. If it was cheaper I'd go more than once a week, as it's the best exercise you can get. I don't want to fork out over £25 a month for gym membership just so I can go swimming.

I'd also love it if the pools were open earlier, so I could go for an early morning swim before work.

I consider myself very fortunate !!
I swim three times a week in a pool that has usually four other people in it, can stay in all day if I want to and pay 2.50 dollars a session (about 1 pound)
I agree that it is very expensive to have a swim regime over there. We found that out when we were in the UK last year and paid 3 pounds each, that was in Leicester. I think it would be a good idea if all health related exercise was free of GST ( the same as your VAT) to encourage people to be more health conscious.

Its not the price that puts me off, so much as the temperature of the water at Hillsborough.

We only go to Hillsborough as everytime we have been to Ponds Forge it has been filthy and I once ended up with a ear infection which I think was caused by swiming in their dirty pool.

The pool at Hillsborough though is always freezing, even on a warm day. A friend of mine works there and he swears that the pool temperature never alters and is the same as every other pool but it never seems that cold in the Metrodome's at Barnsley and Doncaster.

One other drawback of swiming in Hillsborough is, afterwards we used to go to the fastfood place across the road next to the pizza place for tea, but had to stop going there because of the state of the place. It was filthy. On one occasion there was no clean tables to sit at , we ended up asking for a cloth and cleaning one ourselves and the staff never offered to help.

The last (and final time) we went in there the smell of drains was overpowering but they were still serving food. We walked out and ended up ringing the council's food safety people.

Any way there you are, two whinges for the price of one, and neither to do with the original thread.!!

My local pool is Dronfield, prices always seem reasonable there and it's in decent condition. Dronfield is of course run by NE Derbyshire council..

The main thing that stops me going swimming is although it's only just up the road from Bradwy, the bus service is rubbish. It stops running at 6pm on weekdays, 2pm on Saturdays and doesn't run at all on Sundays.

I agree it should be cheaper.

personally I can see a case for lottery money being used to give people free membership of health clubs. I think in the long run it would save the NHS money.

I moaned lots when the university pool went up.

When I first came to Sheffield 6 years ago, swimming was free, which was great. When they first reopened after the refurbishing it was a quid (for a staff member) peak and 50p off peak.

Now, it is 3 quid peak and 2 quid off peak. I got off peak membership (which I can do as a staff membership) but even this works out at 6 quid a week so I have to swim a lot to make up for it - I also do one gym class.

Soon I won't be staff or have time to swim at lunchtimes so I'm going to end up paying a fortune for full gym membership as this just about works out cheaper than paying for each swim (I swim 3 times a week usually). I suggested some sort of swimming membership but they don't seem to have done anything like that.

On the plus side there were 3 people there at lunchtime, and it opens at 7 so I can get there before work, sometimes!

That's a very good and sensible idea mate, shame it'll never be implemented cos the Labour Government don't do sensible :loopy:

Sheffield is very expensive for swimming. I've started going to the Goodwin pool which is £3 (or £2 if you are unemployed or a student) and includes use of the steam room and sauna.
