View Full Version : Old back to back houses in Wincobank-60s
Did anyone live in the old back to back houses in wincobank in the 60s.- newman road.
they were originally built when crowleys came ,so that people who came over for jobs would have somewhere to live.
They had only one room downstairs, one bedroom and an attic.
happy days
nsiebert 27-09-2004, 08:09 I lived on Newman Drive, and went to Wincobank school, I remember those houses well as a kid, but I remember them getting knocked down also, I never knew anyone that lived in them though
I too went to Wincobank School and remember the houses on Newman Road, just below the school I think. There were some on Barrow Road too, if memory serves me correctly. Near to what I think was Harrison's greengrocers [run by Walt Harrison]. I think at this time [late sixties, very early seventies] there were also some in nearby Brightside.
My Dad was born and used to live in the back to back houses on Newman Rd up until they was knocked down. He lived in 3 court 1, Newman rd with his brothers and sisters.

Not the Ainsworths by any chance.
Do pm me as i probably knew your Dad. tara
Hi tara
Not specifically relating to back-to-back houses in the Wincobank area, but this (http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x118/LeipzigLeipzig/BacktobackHouse.jpg)is a plan of typical Sheffield back-to-back houses which you might find interesting.
Oh yes cheers Leipzig. Years ago i once saw a picture or bit of film or something to do with council planning and it showed newman Rd back to backs.
Cant for the life of me remember much more about the film But i do wish i could pick up a photo of them. Tried the sheffield Library website but theres only one of Robin Hood Road.
If anyone knows where i could find any pics or old film of Newman Rd Back to Backs I would be very interested.
handypandy 07-10-2007, 10:11 Some of my family lived there, certainly in the 50's but I'd have to do a bit digging to find out exactly who. Probably name of Kelford. I remember visiting there as a kid and for some reason seem to remeber walking over railway lines, dim and distant memories!
Hi Tara
Try a visit to Sheffield Local Studies Library itself, if I remember correctly the online Picturesheffield.com database only holds 10,000 images, but if you look at the database in the library you have access to about three times more images.

Thanks for this information, I didn't know the library had more than were on picturesheffield. I've been trying to find pictures of the old back to backs on Carver Street in town because some of my relatives used to live there and I'd like to know what it looked like at the the time. I'll take a look on the database in the library.

southfork 03-08-2009, 12:24 Hi awoolen, was your brother called rodger, and was he a military policeman who lived at firthpark! If so he was a mate of my uncle Duncan ( Dunc) from winkobank and i remember both of them turning up at my grans in full military uniform.
Can`t remember if it was before or after Japan
Gran lived at 3 court 5 Newman road.
Janie-m`s dad i suspect is Tony Luxon an old pal of mine.
Dunc, died recently on 30-7-09.
If Rodger is still with us pass on our regards please.
Nephew----Frank.
Hi awoollon, The Broads also lived in the same yard as the Luxon"s and the Fernlys. Billy Broad was my brother Barrys best mate, we lived at No 77 Newman Rd, Opposite Mrs Hughs"s fish&chip shop. Pete Elliot was another big mate of theirs, he lived opposite the Church on Newman Rd.
southfork 04-08-2009, 12:32 Hi Gethro, the Broads are my cousins
Bill looked after me when i was a nipper, whenever i was at my grans i always knew where to find him. He`d be up on Chapmans tip poking a fire.
I remember him breaking his arm.We went into Wooley woods , him still with his pot on and he decided to climb a tree. Almost reached the branches, fell back and broke it again.
There where some real good people in winkobank and Billy was a true character along with most of his mates.
southfork 04-08-2009, 12:58 Hi Janie-m, give my regards to your dad.
Ask him if he remembers his dog (lady or lucky) catching that great big hare up in Dropping well and that bloke who was passing giving him half a crown for it!
Happy days.

I keep trying to get Dad on here but he won't play with the computer:-)

Hi tara, yes you`r right, and on the first floor there was a gusunder and if you where the last to rise it was your job to empty it as i well know! ugh!
On the second floor there was a vent in the roof and it howled like a banshee,it frightened the life out of the younger kids.

Was there a Frank Fearnley senior because my Dad was suppose to have been named after a Frank in the Fearnley family. My dad is 83 now.
Hes one of the Worthingtons originally from court 13. Tom Wilf, fan, may,Alf,Dave. in the yard above Fearnleys.
Also does anyone remember Cynthia worthington, related to the walkers from Barrow Road.
I remember hanging around with Moira Fearnley who had a brother kevin or kevan as his mum use to shout. Moira lived in George Movelys yard.
I do remember their relatives in the Luxon yard. I use to go in that yard a lot with the Makins.
Was there a charlie Bowley at one time in there.
I remember that yard had a big brick square thing in full of old bikes /scrap etc.
just opposite the toilets.
Anyone who remembers John Sadler, is it him that now runs the buffet bar at Bridlington Station. I saw his name on the door but didnt have time to go in as the train was coming.
My dad has memories of Aggie wayne and Johnnie from heaven. Well before my time Johnnie from Heaven but i do remember mrs wayne.
Apparently mrs nelson (nellie) who lived at the front of my grandparents, delivered most of my aunts and uncles and my dad. It was tradition, does anyone remember her and was anyone else. familiar with this tradition. She was suppose to deliver me but my mum had different ideas lol.

DominicM 15-11-2009, 20:01 Does anyone remember the summer Gala's on that land at the back of the vicarage .
The Vicar Fred Herrington ran the Summer Fete on his front lawn of the Vicarage
it was quite a substantial piece of land which now has flats built on it.
There was a great community atmosphere around in those days everybody knew everyone and the elder people of Wincobank usually members of the Bardwell Club would have Cake stalls and Jam stalls at the fete.
There would be various games played like chucking wet sponges at some poor fellow with his face through a hole of a board that had cartoon character painted on it.Guess how many beans in a Jar then prizes for who made the best cakes and Jams.

My Dad has mentioned Billy Broad when talking about Wincobank, I keep saying I'll have to show him what to do to get on here, he'd love it.
sparkyfred 19-02-2010, 00:34 Was there a Frank Fearnley senior because my Dad was suppose to have been named after a Frank in the Fearnley family.
Tara, I remember Mrs Nelson (she had a dog called Bob), and some of the other names you mentioned. And it was my dad who found Aggie Wayne's body in the back yard one night when he came home from work on nights. She'd collapsed on her back step calling the cat in they reckoned and rolled down the yard. I have sent you a message.
Hi sparkeyfred. I will never forget that night. I heard sirens etc and someone said it was poor Aggie, someone found her in the yard.
So it was your dad was it. Ive sent you a pm as i may know who you are.

Hi Tara. I must have slept though it, sirens and all. Just remember him telling me about it next day. He was on his way to the toilet and at first he thought it was a bundle of rags someone had dumped - that's how small and frail she was, very sad. There was also an old fella lived in the house below her, Mr Whittington I think he was called, with very bad eyesigth and thick glasses. I can still picture all those yards and where people lived, think I might draw it out on a map while I can still remember it. You could probably help me fill in the gaps.
sparkyfred 20-02-2010, 18:31 Dora Walker was my aunt.
Anyone know what happenned to Ernie Reville?
He moved to Shiregreen just after we did (66) we were in teh same class at Wooley Wood and used to knock about together sometimes.
sparkyfred 20-02-2010, 20:18 Yes i remember Challoners , coal merchants.
My dad borrowed their coal wagon as a removal van when we moved to Shiregreen. All our stuff was tied on the back with ropes. Me an my mum went in the cab with my dad who was driving it, and my brother was made to go up on the back to make sure nothing fell off (which it did when we got to the bottom of Newman Rd). It would look a bit of a sight these days but matbe not so odd back then?
So many memories are flooding back to me since I started looking at this thread!

I also remember them all except for the ones higher up.
It went something like (fronts) below Redfearns The family had a little son who had long curly hair his name was John, then the Redfearns, nellie Nelson, then you. Mrs kelly,The Sadlers, The Jacksons/ and mr Smith who had a bad limp. Then us , Moveleys shop, then was it Alan Bonsalls with Gwen and Dean. Then Ginger John.
The back yards starting from bottom. Luxons, then Johnny and Maureen. Then Fearnleys,
Makins.
Next yard Worthingtons, Whittingtons, Mrs Wayne.
Next yard ada Mills was it, then Terry Robinsons, Movelys back then another Fearnley family. The next yard started with mrs knight. And the Ainsworths were higher up.
I remember being stopped most mornings on my way to school by a mrs cheesborough asking me to thread her a needle, as she too wore those thick rimmed glasses and couldnt see a thing. Higher up was the Websters Elaine, and also a terry webster near there too.
Anyone fill in the gaps please.
I remember playing in the big house on merton Lane that was suppose to be haunted.
half the roof was missing and floorboards but that didn't stop us lol.
Also the old chapel.
Theres a picture of the big house in its former glory in the Bryan Woodriff book (shiregreen and wincobank memories) Along with details of its former owners.
Does anyone remember a little fruit shop very early 60s just at the side of St Thomas
youth club (as it was then.) The fruit shop was run by a lady named Nancy.
behind it in the yard lived christine Sadler.
I remember playing in the garages on Newman and then getting stuck up a tree, someone had to fetch my dad to climb up and get me out.
Jill Brown lived in a little cottage/farm across the Rd she had a golden Lab called Bruce.
Vivid memories of John Sadler ruining all my whitsuntide dresses throwing cups of water at me through the window. Lol
Remember the whit marches to Blackburn.
And catching the train down the road to Bellvue zoo.
I still dream of the place even now, things that appear in the dreams that i think are just nonsense
are actually real forgotton childhood memories .
As i have found some of the dreams evoke memories of things i had forgotten i knew.
Is there a psychologist on here lol.
Anyone else dream of the place.
Im beginning to sound as mad as a march hare.
sparkyfred 20-02-2010, 23:25 I also remember them all exept for the ones higher up.

If you're mad I am too, cos I still have dreams/flashbacks to Newman Road days too. Ypou seem to remember more names than I can. Think Mrs's Kelly and Nelson were the other way round. I remember climbing those trees at the Challoner's front and Mrs Kelly coming out and telling us off, with all flour on her hands from baking.
Blimey, the haunted house and the chapel! Did you ever go up to that slag tip on the waste ground at the top of Tansley St? We used to jump off the top of there and land in the soft gravelly stuff - god knows what it was - but it was great fun,
St Thomas youth club became Brendan Ingles gym , I went to a few training sessions there, I could hardly understand a word he said to me in his broad Irish accent (something about "are you one of them kids been playing in the trees in our garden?" was the first thing he said to me when he saw me)
sparkyfred 20-02-2010, 23:49 Think Mrs's Kelly and Nelson were the other way round.
Correction - working upwards I think it was Kelly, Nelson, us, then Sadlers

sparkyfred 22-02-2010, 00:19 Thanks for that Gethro. I seem to remember the Greens now.

Tara, I can't remember a shop next to St Thomas's youth club. In the picture I have in my mind the bit above the hall and below the shop on the corner (was it a hairdressers?) was demolished . And below it I just remember houses going down to Dr Wynne's and the post office.
Im determined to find out about this shop. I remember going with my nan and she use to put potatoes in a brown bag. Im sure the lady was called nancy ,she had dark hair took up in a kind of bun thing. How long has that hairdressers been there. Perhaps it use to be there. I recall the shop door was on the front though not the side. I will ask my dad tomorrow to see if he remembers anything.
ps Other than that i could look for info of it in one of the old trade directory books.
Wonder if anyones got one.

Just a thought - was it actually a shop? In those days sometimes people just sold stuff from their houses and it might have seemed like a shop to you at that age. I know where we moved to after in Shiregreen there was a house where they did that - everything from cigs, veg, even fireworks I think.
Hi Tara, Yes the Greens,(Fred & Peggy) did move up Shiregreen somewhere, I think that their two sons, Allan,(one of my best mates) and Hugh were married by then. Allan was living on Victoria St opposite Millmoor Football Ground, then he moved to a new house behind the Drawbridge Pub. Last time I saw Hugh, was in Wincobank Club a few years before it closed. I think he was living on Jardine St at that time. Fred was working with Cem Challoner, on the coal, around Shiregreen. Clem was George Challoners Brother, from Challoner farm on Newman Rd.
Yes I do remember Nancys fruit shop, also the small sweet shop on the corner just above Nancys. It was opposite May Branwoods shop at the bottom of Tansley St. Real happy memories of Wincobank Tara, wouldn"t have missed for the world,!!.
Gethro you have stopped me beginning to think i was imagining things.
I was so sure of the vicinity of that shop. So it appears it was probably where the hairdressers was later. Thanks for that.
I went to wincobank last year to deliver some bad news to my mums cousin who now lives on Newman Rd just up from where challoners use to be, and it was like a different world.
I bought a photo from picture library the one of Merton Lane and a coal truck on it, must have been challoners. just for a memory keepsake.
Did anyone use the loan man round about early 60s i think his nick name was piggy or something. Must have been well known there.
A Mr Jackson took his round over i believe.
Also I remember Mr Movely putting names in his shop window of all the people who hadn't paid their shop bill Lol.
Lots use to walk in and buy their things on strap (as my dad called it) until pay day.
I remember once getting some smarties and telling George to put them on my dads bill,
I darent go home when pay day came .

I remember Mr Movely used to sell these home made ice lollys made in tea cups as moulds. There was a white milky flavoured one that was my favourite. I also clearly remember some of the older kids asking for stuff that was in the back to divert him and then nicking stuff off the counter - I just stood gorping, totally gobsmacked.
Jublies/jublees and freeze ups in a bottle.
There was also bubble gum packs with a different beatles badge in every time.
cocoa and sugar in a grease proof paper, and fizz.
George was always repeating the rhyme Gertie Gatarna, for the young ones.
I also remember my mum telling me about the girl in his yard throwing something at karen Movely which badly stained her brand new coat, she had only just bought. The girls mum denied it was her when everyone saw her.
I remember my Grandfather always arguing with the girls mother they would shout to each other over the yard, i think he once called her a volga boat woman lol.
Not sure what one is.
I remember my mum with the box brownie, taking a picture of all the kids in the Makins yard.
Little Christopher was posing like a superstar, and the picture never came out. Very sad
it would have been a good keepsake.
I remember all the kids using the tin bath for a paddling pool in their yard.
Also playing filmstars and something like british bull dog.
Does anyone remember Diane Mason, she was related to someone in that yard.
People use to put their old stuff across the road in front of challoners and it wasnt there for very long, someone would adopt it very quickly lol.
I remember the tips on standon, jumping across one giant tip to the other.
There was also loads of paste jewellery found there. People had just thrown away.
Remember the second hand furniture shop on merton lane?
Wasn't there also one at the very top of newman Rd.
Does anyone remember the sports days, at wincobank school. some were held on a field at the beginning of wooley woods, and the winners recieved ice lollies.
The swings use to be further up the woods at first, before they moved them near the main road.
Does anyone remember mr Ball who was the park keeper in a little hut, he use to put plasters on the kids when they fell down.
He had very strong antiseptic that stung like hell.
Mr Ball later moved to shiregreen.
GT stripe 25-02-2010, 12:44 I am trying to find an old friend Jill Brown who used to live in Coal Aston.
Tara, I believe you may have known her (she had a golden retriever).
Could anybody help me with contact details?

I remember him well. One day we were playing at being commandos or something similar and some us ran into that toilet block nearby to do a "raid". I kicked the door open on the cubicle (getting a bit too much into role I think) and he was there on the toilet! He went absolutely ape and I ran away before he could get his trousers back up.
Sparkey you have the sweetest memories lol.
Poor Mr Ball.

Jill Brown was a very good friend of mine in the 60s. Her dog was called Bruce. (Could be wrong as Sandy springs to mind) She had a friend who lived near the vicarage, was it Eccles street. I remember her taking me there when it was pelting down with rain one day, we went to play in this giant loft with all sorts of toys, it was like having christmases all at once. Wasn't your house was it.
Im afraid we lost touch after the Back to Backs got knocked down and we all had to move.
Im not sure though if Jill left just before then.
Jill had long Blonde hair in a pony tail then.
sparkyfred 26-02-2010, 00:40 Im afraid we lost touch after the Back to Backs got knocked down and we all had to move. ...
I
When did they get knocked down in the end? We were one of the first to move I think in 66.
sheffexile 27-02-2010, 23:05 sparkyfred You remember me!, Moira Fearnley and yes Mum did shout Kevan, thats how it was spelt, I have memories of Newman Road we moved out when the back to back houses were being knocked down and went to live in the countryside, well thats how it seemed to me. We lived in North Anston and actually had a bathroom then! Now living in the top of Scotland.
I was recently in contact with Karen Moverley after Maud sad passing.
Sorry Moira Most people assumed it was Kevin.
I do apologise.
Ive asked about you for years , with no response from anyone.
I use to play with you in the yard, we sometimes made sculptures on the wall out of all the ice that collected after the snow.
Do you also remember Jill Brown?
I remember you coming along with us to the so called gang fight round the corner, we took spoons and sand lol.
I once got in to trouble for taking you with me to the sand tips on standon Road.
Your mum didnt agree. We came back with shell collections and bits of paste jewellery.
Do you remember.

exhausted 01-03-2010, 19:27 I remember when Fife street consisted off just a hand full of houses backed by Maycocks field. Sheila Brookes shop where we used to by our fireworks and oglesby's fruit shop.

Wow. I've just stumbled across this thread and I'm bowled over.
I'm the grandson of Maud Moverley and the son of Karen. It's lovely hearing all the nice memories of george and Maud. My mum always speaks fondly of her time growing up in Wincobank.
Sadly, we laid my Nan to rest in December last year aged 97. she was a very special lady and the best Nan in the world. I never got to meet my grandfather George as he died before I was born but Its nice to hear people speak fondly of him. My mum has told me all about his homemade lollies and the shop she grew up in. she always says I have a look of him as well.
If anyone has any more memories of maud or george I'd love to hear them.
Hi Gethro, I knew Eric Leversidge. He was mad on biking. Joe was the National
24 hour time trial champ. Did either 460 or 480 miles on a fixed wheel bike ( Claude Butler). Went to school with christine Copley, June Allen. Other lads were Ray Muress, Robert Hardwick, Freddie Sporn, Mick Duffy, Eric Dalton,
Paul Bates, all Wincobank School.
Ive just spoken with my dad and one of his best mates was Mick Huckles/Duffy.
Is this the same one you have listed.
My dad went to school with Joan Broad.
Johnny from Heaven who i mentioned earlier was John Edlington, who's poor wife died in tragic circumstances.
years later he courted Aggie Wayne.
There was a big argument over Mrs Wayne between John and someone called Bert Cawthorn, John was heard to shout "she's mine all mine"
Two of The Edlington sons were Frank and Tubby (real name forgotten.)
They lived across from the Broads.
They use to sell their comics (Rover and Wizzard )to my dad for a halfpenny after they had read them.
He mentions Daddy Hughes , shop and the strap books Daddy Hughes issued.
He once took his mums book and spent it on sweets for days and when she went to pay the bill was enormous.
Sounds like we all did something like that ,me with the smarties.
He once took an egg from Nancy's and was frog marched back down to return it by my grandfather who'se nick name then was Gull.
The chipshop use to be owned by Liza Crump, before Hughes.
Does anyone remember the Leighs or Lees, Jack and his son were swimmers.
They lived just past the entry going down on the front of whittingtons yard.
I went to school with David Leigh.

David Leigh went on win a medal for the UK in the Commonwelath games didn't he?

Hi there, I remember your grandad - very friendly man, always joking with us kids. He had silvery hair, and always wore a white overall in the shop I recall. And those lollies he made were great, specially the milky ones which he used to kid us were made from soap powder !

Of course, you're asking in relation to what your Dad's told you, ie from earlier days, and it's just come to me - I remember now being told that the Leighs lived in our house before we did (ie before I was born cos I was born in that house). Then they moved up to Robin Hood's Rd.

I lived at no 77, five houses above your nan & grandads shop. Your uncle Brian is one of my best friends.Still see him now and again. The last time I saw him was at your nans funeral, also said a quick hello to your mom. It was a sad day, Your nan was one the nicest persons you would wish to meet. She was real lady. Now your grandad was a real character,- had a lot of laughs with him. We were all keen cyclists in the 50s/60s. Your nan and grandad were out on their bikes most weekends, then when your mom came along, they got a tandem with a small side-car fitted to it for your mom to travel in. Later, when your mom was a bit bigger ,your grandad had a small seat fitted to the back of his bike, where your mom sat in and travelled with them. Your mom must have traveled thousands of miles on those bikes ,- and never peddled one of them,!!!!. Next time you see your mom, please pass on my best wishes, I tink she will know who I am.?.

Hi Gethro.
thanks for info. Its great to hear the stories about my grandparents. My mums told me about all the cycling they did. she never mentioned she didn't have to pedal :hihi: funnily enough I'm a keen cyclist myself. It must be genetic.
We may have met at Maud's funeral. Although it was a sad day it was nice to see the extended family and friends in one room. I'd not seen my uncle Brian since my wedding in 2008 so it was nice to catch up with him and Shirley.
I'll pass on your regards to my mum :)
TheEqualizer 08-03-2010, 12:27 Hi there, I remember your grandad - very friendly man, always joking with us kids. He had silvery hair, and always wore a white overall in the shop I recall. And those lollies he made were great, specially the milky ones which he used to kid us were made from soap powder !
Thanks for the info sparkyfred. It sounds like George was quite a character. I had to smile at the post from Tara about my Nan putting the names of people who owed money in the window :hihi:

You're welcome. Think I may have exhausted what I remember of him and the shop on here now though. Tara's about the same age as me and seems to remember some things a lot better than I can :(
I once went in pretty late at night, for a penny arrow bar, opened the sneck on the shop door , went in but no George. After i shouted Hello he came rushing in from the back and told me he was closed but had forgotten to lock the front door. ( so unlike George Lol)
I was rewarded with lots of sweets the next day because he said i saved him from being robbed. Im sorry sparkyfred, I didnt share them with you Lol.
Does anyone remember doing little jobs for Maud and being rewarded with sweets.
Equaliser, I remember going down to someones house on or near Wooley Wood Rd, Im sure it was a relative of yours her name was Susan would it be Karen's Cousin. This was in the 60s.
TheEqualizer 09-03-2010, 10:06 Hi Tara.
Yep, Susan is my mums Niece. she's the daughter of Brenda.
