Hi All,

Just thought i'd start a tropical fish section in the PF. I have one community tank and looking to set up a smaller cold water tank.

Are there any other fish keepers on here?

How did the discus get on with the other fish? Didn't think you could keep them with tetra's and the like?

kate55
26-07-2006, 13:52
The discus was fine with the other fish, kept him self to himself. It was doller that was the problem as he used to attack discus alot. The doller is also eating any small neons we put in the tank.

I've got a huge tank full of community fish of all shapes, size & colour but can't remember what most of them are called

NB: Don't get sunset platties of mixed sex as they breed like mental, lol.

Hi, me and the GF have 3 tanks set up at the mo.
One community tank with mainly tetras and gouramis.
One community tank with various barbs and small cichlids.
One bigger tank with 2 red tiger oscars (about 8 - 10") and a large plec.

I might be looking to rehome the oscars in the near future, if anyone is interested in them.

Hi there!

Me and my boyfriend are just starting out keeping tropical fresh-water fish...we've got the tank but no fish yet! We were just wondering if anyone could recommend the best place to go and buy some fish? We've got a car so don't mind travelling a bit if need be...
Thanks very much!

We get our fish from Elm Lane. I forget the name of the shop but its opposite the fire station. The guy is really good there and very helpful in advising what fish go together and what not to put in with certain fish.

We found this not to be the case, when we went a lot of the fish were sick or dying.

The places I've been to (I'm not from Sheffield so don't know about that area), yes - but that probably because they source their fish in an agreeable manner - I'm not sure if the same would be true if I went into a shop who got their stock via less kind methods :suspect:
They could just lie I suppose, I have no way of checking.

Are'nt clown fish marine fish? The place at the bottom of the moor is Middletons...i wouldnt advise going there..when we have been there are always dead fish in their tanks (i dont buy from tanks with dead fish in) or they have mis-advised us on peaceful fish saying they are peaceful but then we get them home to find they're aggressive and fin-nip our lovely fish family  we find sheffield aquatics on Langsett Road a great place for fish.

Clown fish (http://www.diversionoz.com/Steve/images/tclown1.jpg) ('Nemos') are marine; red & white and pretty small.
Clown loach (http://www.fishkeepersforum.org/software/profiles/images/clownloaches.JPG) are tropical (I define that as warm freshwater); they're orange with a black pattern and although they start pretty tiny they can grow to be relatively huge, over several years. Mine have probably quadrupled in size in 2 years :D

Me and my hubby and been to a couple of shops. Pets at home are no good in our experience as fish from them and the ones we originally had have died ( after putting their fish in our tank). Tried them on 2 occasions as same thing happened. Pets are Pals, Chapeltown used to be no good (not sure about now). Found that the tanks were really dirty and there was always alot of dead fish floating in different tanks. Our fish always died when putting the ones we purchased from them in our tank.
Now Elm lane tropicals is the only one we use now. Went under new managment earlier in the year and the new owner is really good. We would not get our fish from anywhere else.

We have 2.5 ft tropical tank, but just planning to change to a 4ft marine (wanted one for years). tropical tank has golden barbs, bloodfin tetra, congo tetra, celebes rainbows and aisian glass catfish in at the moment (these will be looking for new homes) oh, and a couple of 2" matsukowabaki koi in there growing on till they can go in the pond. We get our tropicals from the aquatic centre at pennine garden centre in bamford, which always has a stunning selection of healthy looking fish, including some of the more unusual ones. Owner very knowledgable too. had a good marine supplier recommended in derbyshire, somewhere off J28 of M1, cant remember name of place, begins with a P LOL!

a very good aquatic centre is wards garden centre in coal aston they have everything from the weird and wonderfull to your box standard tetras and they also stock marine fish and equipment they are very helpfull and usually tell you something totally different to the other places and i find that this advice is the correct advice. if you are prepared to travel then wharf aquatics of junction 28 M1 is massive and very good standards of fish its massive!!!!! go even if you dont want anything because the display tank which is about the size of a terraced house is amasing.

they do marine, tropical including sting rays and those fish that eat monkeys cant remember their name, cold water they also do reptiles including camens. they also have a massive stock of tanks and all the equipment you need some of the little stuff you would find cheaper else where but for the fish they top notch

lalaland
07-09-2006, 08:58
I think you are talking about the Arowana.

They are supposed to eat baby monkeys if they fall from trees in to the water or are low enough to catch, but this is apparently only done by the larger fish and it's more common for them to eat bats, birds, insects, other fish and anything that's recently fallen in to the water that can fit in to it's mouth.

It's often called the monkey fish because it can jump out of the water which it does to catch stuff as mentioned above.

I love them, but they are expensive fish and get very large.

From what I've heard and read they are very rewarding fish to keep, but only a good idea for the dedicated and experienced fish keeper.

If you don't want to travel as far as Wharf but want something ordering in or friendly advice then I recommend Sheffield Aquatics. Very friendly, knowledgable and not too bad prices either.

I've tried SAS on Abbeydale Road, but they were higher prices and seemed to concentrate mainly on marine fish.

The other half and I started with a large community tank about 8 months ago and there's been no looking back since!!

I have to admit that I LOVE    my discus, especially the 3 babies we have left from their first spawning <awwwwww>

I would love to get my hands on some golden discus but I have to admit that I have a real soft spot for the Marlboroughs with the black fins

Not a Tropical Fish I know. But they get the same illnesses.

I have a large black moor (about 3inch long) He has had cloudy eyes for some time now. I have tried the usual treatments but this doesn’t seem to do anything. He also has a little white in his mouth. Also tried the treatments for velvet and slime disease. No success.

He is in general a sickly fish. He can suffer with swim bladder, if I’m not careful how I feed him.

The water quality is fine

Anyone any ideas?

You can pick up a few setups second hand as people find that they lose interest, usually due to not getting the right advice and things going wrong. Try the free-ads, can be some in there. New ones aren't cheap unfortunately. The stands they come on are ridiculously expensive as they are usually only chipboard covered in plastic. If you know someone that is handy you can get a good stand made up from all sorts of stuff to suit your home.

3inch is not large at all for a black moor. There are many things that can cause illnesses in fish, but most often it comes down to water quality.

Things like using tapwater direct into the tank, too much cleaning, too little cleaning, fluctuations in acidity and tempaerature, not enough oxygen in the water etc., as well as other environmental factors will all result in poorly fish.

WOW, 20 years. Only been into it for just under a year, and completely hooked!!!

We're house sitting some fish for a friend while he moved and got the tank going again. He has an enormous (to me) 15" plec ......... he's gorgeous and I nicknamed him Derek LOL. Also looking after a large clown and pink kissing gourami along with a coupla small fish. Will miss them when they go this weekend. Sorry to hear about the blue lobsters :(

Gave our communal tank a *sort out* today. More rock, repotted plants and created more caves for the cats etc, and even the discus are getting in there. The other half is having kittens, keeps thinking they'll get stuck LOL

Hope you get ya babies back soon :)

It might be a clown loach,
http://www.loaches.com/species-index/clown-loach-chromobotia-macracanthus
I think you will find most tropicals come from the far east, where it is easy to breed them, outdoor pond,no heating or lighting, just leave them to it.We used to catch guppies and harlequins in the monsoon drains in Singapore, easy with a net and got loads.

It defiantly isn’t water quality. I am meticulous with my water quality. I have another moor and 3 other fish and they are all fine.

I’m not a novice fish keeper and I have tried to treat the poorly moor a few times, but he never seems to get any better what ever I try.

BLUE LOBSTER / CRAYFISH FREE TO GOOD HOME!

I've had my blue lobster neatly a year now(got it may 24th 2006 as a b/day present) and it has grown massive far to big for my fish tank and causing madness in my tropical fish tank.

I am willing to give it free to a good home. (it hasn't eaten any of my fish yet but i have read up on the internet and they are known to sometimes eat them)

Please rehome lobster otherwise it is going in the pot and a quick tasting lesson (Joke) But it does need a new home as soon as possible

I cannot deliver it so anyone wanting the "lobster" will have to collect from my mums home in Shiregreen / firthpark area call on (*Sheffield*)0114)2819152 and ask for stacy and i will give u directions.

p.s it has just had its 1st molt (lost old shell)

I needed to resurrect this thread as I need advice from you people in the know..:)

10 days ago, we set up out first tropical fish tank..
When we bought the set up, we bought some log/root things and we followed the directions of soaking them first before putting in the tank and what not, but now, they have this white algae, cotton wool like stuff growing on them...

http://s107.photobucket.com/albums/m287/wadeylove/?action=view&current=DSCF0004.jpg

Is this stuff normal ?? If not, what can I do to get rid of it ??
We have since (on sunday just gone) put in a few little mollies and they seem to be doing ok.. We stupidly forgot to mention the algae thing to the fella in the shop before buying the fish  but they don't seem to mind it...
What should I do ?? I've googled "white algae" but it came up with was info on green and brown algae

Hiya

It's likely to be a fungus, not an algae. Try doing a search on that but choose images and see if any look similar to what you have. Once you know what it is, then you can find out how to deal with it. In the meantime I would definately remove it from the tank.

Oh yea

Also forgot to mention, the wood is bogwood, and should be soaked for a good few days until it stops bleeding colour as much.

through past experience with bog wood soak it for at least 2 weeks, so the colour doesnt run, i would remove the bogwood soak it for another week or so, what you see on the bog wood could possibly be a reaction to the chemicles used on the bog wood, and then the chemicles you have put in to set your tank up reacting together. thats just a guess but i would take the wood out rinse it down to get rid of this visiable form and then soak it for a week. but like angie says google it and look at the images we might all be wrong

Great advise there :)

I did search on it earlier and found a coupla fish forums where others had the same problem. Apparantly you boil the wood and give it a good scrub. Although apparantly they seemed to think that it was caused by something in the wood, and so wouldn't affect the fish, I wouldn't take the chance. If you have a spare tank (or bucket) I'd be tempted to put the wood in there and use some tank water and keep it heated to the same temp and keep it under surveillance until it goes away, which apparantly it does do eventually.

The fish shops in sheffield that i know of are sheffield aquatics langsett road very good selection and prices blokes that work there are top notch will give you all the advice you will need for each kind of fish they have.

Wards garden centre coal aston good selection of fish good prices on some fish a tad steep on others, one of the blokes that works there can seem a little off putting but he does have the best interest of the fish at heart

Pastures farm coal Aston small tropical shop at back sometimes have interesting fish but usually quite expensive

Sas off abbeydale road mainly marine but have a good selection of tropicals some fish are cheap others expensive

pets at home NO GO

There is a new one just opened up just off gleadless road by curry tonight good selection and very good prices not much in at moment as they are new cant remember the name, but it lokks like they are going to get a few tanks in there they also sell second hand tanks there which i have never seen before one for the future this one, will get back to you on the name
Bamford garden centre the woman there is very pleasent and is very keen on the old discus she has a large selection of fish at reasonable prices

the only other worth visiting is wharf aquatics in mansfield its the biggest i have ever been too its brill go if you can

The advice i will give you is shop around at these shops they all have different prices for different fish, get the bargain fish its the only way

hope this helps

There is the Elm Lane shop, thats recently had a refit etc and looks great, good fish too.

The one at Bamford Garden centre is fantastic. ALWAYS end up spending money there. Fantastic fish, and she really knows her stuff so always helpful with hints and tips.

The pet shop at Chapeltown recently changed hands and the fish area has had a refit, far better, good prices and good fish. Got some gorgeous serpa tetras the other week :D

There are a few good fish forums out there including SVAS Which has some very knowledgeable members and who are always willing to give great advise. You can find them here www.svas.co.uk

Hi,
Is the Elm Lane shop open now? I went past a while back and it was being done up.
What days is it open?
Thanks.

Telephone number there.

I think they are not open on Sundays and they close early on Thursdays.
Having said that I got there at 12:50pm and bought some botia a couple of Thursdays ago. And then went back and bought some more botia on the Friday. :)

He's got kribs, guorami, gorgeous guppies and some lovely platies as well as chinese algae eaters, angels and loads of other stock.

I've only recently started up a fish tank and have cruised around a few of the shops in Sheffield, looking at what's out there. Elm lane's a bit of a distance from me but the fish are kept in tiptop condition with clean tanks and a pleasant environment. I've not yet seen anything there that's made me think I wouldn't want to spend my money there not trust the fish.

I have two large ( 10" ) Albino Oscars and a big Pleco. My wife thinks I am crazy because I think my Oscars have personalities.
