View Full Version : One for the oldies
Do any of you remember a song sung to the tune of, Gost Riders In The Sky. The only words that I remember are "Running out of the Barley Corn and heading down the Moor" I think that it might have been written by one of the club Turns in the late 50s early 60s. Cheers Pete.

Hi, ghost riders in the sky was sung by Marty robbins but has also been covered by frankie laine and johnny cash amongst others. I seem to remember the song also being the theme tune to a western series in the 60s
Has anyone heard the mickey take to going underground by 'the jam' called 'london underground' ???????????
Could it be this.......
An old cowpoke went riding out
One dark and windy day,
Upon a ridge he rested as
He went along his way,
When all at once a mighty herd
Of red eyed cows he saw,
A-plowin' through the ragged skies
And up a cloudy draw.
Yippee-yi-ya, yippee-yi-yo,
Ghost herd in the sky.
Their brands were still on fire and
Their hooves were made of steel,
Their horns were black and shiny and
Their hot breath he could feel,
A bolt of fear shot through him as
He looked up in the sky,
For he saw the riders comin' hard
And he heard their mournful cry:
Yippee-yi-ya, yippee-yi-yo,
Ghost riders in the sky.
Their faces gaunt, their eyes were blurred,
Their shirts all soaked with sweat,
They're riding hard to catch that herd,
But they ain't caught 'em yet,
'cause they've got to ride forever on
That range up in the sky,
On horses snortin' fire, as
They ride on hear their cry:
Yippee-yi-ya, yippee-yi-yo,
Ghost riders in the sky.
The cowpokes loped on past him and
He heard one call his name,
If you want to save your soul from hell
A-riding on our range,
Then, cowboy, change your ways today,
Or with us you will ride,
A-trying to catch the devil's herd
Across these endless skies.
Yippee-yi-ya, yippee-yi-yo,
Ghost riders in the sky.

pitsmoorboy 19-07-2006, 08:24 Has anyone heard the mickey take to going underground by 'the jam' called 'london underground' ???????????
I have it on my Mobile.
Yes Pensionipper, thats the one that I was thinking about.
Could you pm me the words? Thanks. Pete.
pensionipper 20-07-2006, 07:51 Peterdo - sorry mate, the sands of time and mists of memory have taken their toll. The few odd words I do remember wouldn't make much sense, so the only advice I have is either 1) find somebody who worked on the buildings about that time or 2) Have a go at making your own up- as blue as you like with political correctness thrown out of the window! Cheers, Pn.
shoeshine 20-07-2006, 09:29 By golly, this thread takes me back to the late 1940's as a nipper.
I recall on many occasions as a child sitting in my cousin's small tent, pitched on their front lawn at the height of summer.
He had a wind-up gramophone and a few 12" records, one of which was "Ghost Riders in the Sky".
We listened to it over and over again all afternoon.
Thinking back now, it must have driven the neighbours crackers. You don't even think about that when you're a child do you? :)
Thanks Pensionipper. Sounds like your memory is as good as mine.
What brought it back was hearing Johny Cash singing Ghost Riders on the radio the other day.
nanrobbo 21-07-2006, 03:43 I once heard a very rude version of D'ye ken John Peel, Peterdo but too rude to repeat, even if I could remember it. Don't know the Ghost Rider one tho'- only Frankie Laine's version.
Hi Nan the only other John Peel that I remember is " Do you ken John Peel he's a real fine lad, he's the worst centre forward united ever had. If he does'nt score a goal we will put him on the dole and send him back to Ireland in the morning.
:D
Pete.
Edit That should be Jimmy Donny. Sorry.

it was the theme song for a television programme called "Rawhide" starring Clint Eastwood.
Albatross 06-06-2007, 07:51 Nope Rawhide had it's own theme tune called "Rawhide"
Rollin', rollin', rollin'
Though the streams are swollen
Keep them dogies rollin'
Rawhide!
Rain and wind and weather
Hell-bent for leather
Wishin' my gal was by my side.
All the things I'm missin',
Good vittles, love, and kissin',
Are waiting at the end of my ride
Chorus:
Move 'em on, head 'em up
Head 'em up, move 'em on
Move 'em on, head 'em up
Rawhide
Count 'em out, ride 'em in,
Ride 'em in, count 'em out,
Count 'em out, ride 'em in
Rawhide!

Sorry I got it wrong but it was worth it to see somebody has remembered all the words:rolleyes:
Sweetcheeks 06-06-2007, 12:39 If you can`t remember the lyrics then listen to the instrumental version of (Ghost) Riders In The Sky by The Ramrods from 1960. There is a video on YouTube but I cannot do the link.
neoteric 06-06-2007, 13:55 Wow there are so may cover versions of this song - all listed on here http://www.secretspain.org/ghostriders.html
and they have links so that you can listen.
My favourite is the Duane Eddy version - the twangs the thang!
Compound_Kid 06-06-2007, 16:05 If you're a regular listener to Radio 4's "I'm Sorry I haven't a Clue",you'll know that the lyrics of many well known songs can be sung to the tune of another.
With "Ghost Riders In The Sky",you can sing the lyrics of Procul Harum's 1967 Hit "Whiter Shade Of Pale" to it!
Give it a try and you'll find it fits perfectly....

I think you'll find that little jingle was dedicated to Jimmy Dunne,United's
Irish centre forward in the early 30's. He was later transferred to Arsenal
for £10.000,a lot of money in those days. A phenominal header of the ball,
scored loads with his head.

Hi BLITZER. Thanks for that. I didn't think it was that old. We used to sing it as kids in the 40's. :D
