Cheers  Strix 17-07-2006, 14:05 have you got an OS map? ianbrownfan 17-07-2006, 14:07 have you got an OS map? nah thats the problem...will have to buy one. :) Craig7777 17-07-2006, 14:09 Not sure if this will help Clicky (http://www.buxtononline.net/derbyshire.htm) Craig7777 17-07-2006, 14:12 In fact that websites a bit Sh*te sorry:( Strix 17-07-2006, 14:12 os are online, or if you use www.multimap.co.uk and get to the right zoom level, you can see the OS version. Don't go up there without a map though - sometimes the paths are hard to pick out, and we once spent a wet saturday traipsing down a hillside off Kinder having wandered off the path, only to find our exit blocked by what seemed like miles of sheepfolds. And we had a dog with us fox20thc 17-07-2006, 14:14 If you go to the peak info centre they have a fab map with walks of different difficulties you can buy  ianbrownfan 17-07-2006, 14:28 cheers all! tonyloveboat 17-07-2006, 14:30 I like this one - Start in Castleton and walk up the gorge to the east of the Castle and then head across past Rowter Farm to Mam Tor then down Winnats Pass into Castleton for a pint of something tasty in the Castle Inn. Not the most exciting, but plenty of up and down and some good scenery. beckelina 17-07-2006, 16:40 use www.ordnancesurvey.gov.uk and go to their Get-A-Map page - gets you to 1:25,000 scale, much better than MultiMap's 1:50,000. Also if you go to www.openaccess.gov.uk you can see all the areas of access land and a bigger zoom-able map. Destiny 17-07-2006, 16:44 OMG!!!!!!!.........my mate and i walked up MAMTOR at Castleton.it was fantastic!. Very tireing, but an ace experience. It is well worth doing. Destiny Lewis 17-07-2006, 16:47 It really depends on what you call challenging, Mam Tor and the surrounding area is good for walks though. Lewis Tombob 17-07-2006, 16:52 A good one that i enjoyed was park up at the car park under mam tor at the top of winnats pass then walk up to the summit of Mamtor, then down the ridge (great ridge) over back tor and onto Lose Hill (amazing views from here). then from Lose Hill you can drop down into Hope village. From the Hope village there is a path you can pick up that goes upto castleton then back to the car park at the top of winnats. With an OS map this route would be easy to plan out. If you wanna see a couple of my photos from the great ridge and mamtor have a gander at the links. mamtor: http://www.ephotozine.com/gallery/showlargepic.cfm?photoid=455843 mamtor: http://www.ephotozine.com/gallery/showlargepic.cfm?photoid=373509 Great ridge: http://www.ephotozine.com/gallery/showlargepic.cfm?photoid=379427 Great ridge: http://www.ephotozine.com/gallery/showlargepic.cfm?photoid=658209 hope that helps SV500 17-07-2006, 18:56 it takes something to make me envious of someone elses pics :hihi: they were very good indeed  isn't there a "centre" in castleton where there would be info re: walks ect, im off over there on the bike next week,il have a looksy, JJ.. Panda Pasoos 17-07-2006, 19:30 KINDER KINDER KINDER!!! When I go out there I always go up kinder. Some of the views are amazing and last time we did a pretty challenging rock climb type jobby up to the tope up the river bed. - I say river bed, there was actually a river running down there too. But it might have dried up now. Panda:banana: Strix 17-07-2006, 19:33 Can I see a forum meet brewing? purdyamos 17-07-2006, 21:31 Can I see a forum meet brewing? Yes please. I've never been up Kinder Scout because I've been too scared of the weather changing and being stranded and lost up there. Yes I'm a girly weed. But I like hills too. Mummy! coyleys 17-07-2006, 21:59 I like this one - Start in Castleton and walk up the gorge to the east of the Castle and then head across past Rowter Farm to Mam Tor then down Winnats Pass into Castleton for a pint of something tasty in the Castle Inn. Not the most exciting, but plenty of up and down and some good scenery. Did that last year, the gorge your talking about is Cave Dale, it threw it down all day, but had a brilliant time, the problem we did have was finding our tent after consuming 78 pints of ale (slight exaggeration, me thinks). But to sleep with Mother Nature, to smell her sweet breath, to wash your face in the morning dew, it beats your Spain, Portugal, or Cyprus any day. coyleys 17-07-2006, 22:26 Have a trek around the Derwent dam’s especially Howden. When you get to the bottom of the dam wall, ponder, and try to visualise the 617 Squadron doing there practice runs in preparation for the Ruhr Dams. If you have a good imagination, it gives you a good buzz. This site gives you an idea: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/geoff.richardson/favourite_walks/fw0087_abbey_bank/04-.html Such beauty Andy78 18-07-2006, 01:10 I love parking at Hope train station, walking up Loose Hill and across the ridge to Mam Tor. Then drop down to Edale, have a pint, then jump the train back to Hope. Stunning views and a nice afternoon out. Though, I concur with others that Kinder is the best. There's so many walks that you can do of varying difficulty. Last time, I did a good 16 mile yomp and got covered in mud; it was ace! It's lots of fun scrambling across the pete troughs, trying not to lose your bearings. :) Mental note: Need to take self camping again soon. :) barnie41 18-07-2006, 08:04 Park in Castleton village, walk back toward Hathersage. Just out of Castleton is a footpath that will take you across farm land and on to the summit of lose hill. From there, carry on all the way to the top of Mam Torr, over the other side, and back down Winnats pass into Castleton village. Not sure about the exact mileage - about 5 I think, but its worth the effort. barny_100 18-07-2006, 10:22 Try this link (http://www.walkingbritain.co.uk/walks/walklist.php?npid=3), the dark peak section is what you'll want to look at. Has maps and instructions so is perfect really. A good fairly hefty one is to start at Mam Tor and do a big loop round Rushup Edge, over to Brown Knoll and the edge of Kinder and then down into Edale and back to Mam Tor. You might be sore after that though! alevans 18-07-2006, 10:27 [QUOTE=Tombob]A good one that i enjoyed was park up at the car park under mam tor at the top of winnats pass then walk up to the summit of Mamtor, then down the ridge (great ridge) over back tor and onto Lose Hill (amazing views from here). then from Lose Hill you can drop down into Hope village. Or you can cut back up to Hollins cross an retrace the star of the walk back to the car park, my favourite way of doing this walk. saxon51 18-07-2006, 15:48 Did the Cave Dale - Mam Tor - Hollins Cross - back to Castleton (for meal and a pint) walk a couple of New Years ago with some colleagues from school, and it was lovely. It had snowed (pretty deep) and it took about three hours at a gentle stroll and stopping to admire the scenery. Ark-Seven 18-07-2006, 20:51 Start at the nags head in Edale, join the start of the penine trail and walk to nether booth. you will cross a bridge just after you pass through a farm, theres a small gate on your right leads to a path that follows crowden brook onto the top of kinder. when you reach the top follow the contour round to your left and head along the edge towards the cowburn turnnel air shaft (see pic) and then cary on round across brown knoll and eventually crossing mam tor and hollins cross and taking the route back down to edale or carrying on across the lords seat and to loose hill and back down into hope. http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2361&d=1140976990 Hecate 19-07-2006, 07:42 Try this link (http://www.walkingbritain.co.uk/walks/walklist.php?npid=3), the dark peak section is what you'll want to look at. Excellent idea! The countryside in my neck of the woods is as dull as a very dull thing compared to what you're all lucky enough to live close to. ianbrownfan 20-07-2006, 13:56 KINDER KINDER KINDER!!!
