View Full Version : Top Gear. Funniest programme on TV
uncleheed 17-07-2006, 10:33 Just how funny is this programme?
It beats hands down any sit-com the BBC can churn out.
The caravan holiday on last nights was wet your pants funny.
Check it out here (http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctwo/programmes/?id=top_gear)
If you have never seen it,you can watch all episodes from this series.
Swan_Vesta 17-07-2006, 10:45 Quality viewing!! Me and our lass were in tears when Clarkson set the caravan alight and then went out for a conference with Hammond and May.
It's one of the few programmes which combines consistent quality with merciless mocking of lefties, the French, traffic wardens and anyone else who has irritated them :D
I liked the one where they made a car into a convertible with the home made folding roof, that dropped to bits in the car wash then blew off on the motorway.
I like the races too, like London to Rome by car and by public transport.
Yes I agree - it was hilarious but for some reason the fire in the caravan looked like it was set up.....

Nooo....you don't think?!
It was an obvious set up. They can't stand caravans/caravaners(sp?) and took what was probably an earnest idea from the production team and designed a way to annoy/upset as many caravaners as possible.
Top stuff though!!

Who cares if it was set up.
It was still acted out funnier than any "amusing situation" that Hyacinth Bucket would find herself in.
And don't forget that those 3 are not trained actors.
This series has moved away from the testing of over-priced supercars, and had more of this kind of thing.
The one where they made boats out of cars was comedy genius.

True - and it's cheap TV to make certainly for the quality laughs.

More so since the introduction of Hammond & May:thumbsup:
Yep top show :) Programs like Fifth Gear just try and copy and do it very badly.
banesmabes 17-07-2006, 14:27 I love it even though I hate cars. Obviously everything that went wrong on the caravan holiday was a set up. If James May thinks driving a bus is easy then he wouldn't ever accidently crash a caravan. And the neighbours whose awning (sp?) they crashed into and whose caravan they also destroyed in the fire never turned up did they?!? Loved it! I've never seen the attraction of caravanning either, as Clarkson said, they go all that way to defacate in a bucket. Am dying to ask all the caravanners at work if they saw it....
redinsheff 17-07-2006, 14:27 Not sure about it being cheap tv, the budget must be huge for this year....but yes, a great show and by far the best motoring show on TV for some time....
James May driving the caravan into the post coming out of the petrol station....quality!
sheff_minx 17-07-2006, 17:35 Brilliant TV!!!
Agree with the OP that it's "wet-your-pants-funny"
"It's not a pan fire anymore, it's a van fire!!!" :D:D
I just watched last nights episode.
And all they managed to prove is that they are incompetant idiots who probably shouldn't be allowed out of secure accomodation.
How was that funny, they chose the wrong car, they drove around slowly (on purpose), they deliberately chose the wrong place to turn around, apparently james may can't actually drive or else has had a lobotomy. They staged running into the awning and the fire, and they have the imagination of a gold fish...
I don't caravan, I don't want too, I much prefer a hotel and flying to my destination.
But that was the tv equivalent of a story posted on the BNP website. Complete and upper tripe contrived to make a point and failing myserably.
Grim Reaper 17-07-2006, 19:34 I love Top Gear, last nights was ace. James May is hilarious because he can take the rubbish thrown at him by Clarkson and Hammond - and come on Hammonds teeth Whitened  i think so

Maybe he's had a de-scale & polish?
dieselbabe 17-07-2006, 19:43 I love this program have done for long time now. This time round as been very funny and gets even more funny. I dont know what one been my best so far but i think it got to be between the soft top people car when they set the car wash alight or the caravan one last night. Ho and last weeks radio report had me in tears with clarkson just slagging of people cars then doing the report and angry people ringing in.
I normally like the program, but the thing about the caravans was just stupid.
sheffdan 17-07-2006, 19:51 Yes I agree - it was hilarious but for some reason the fire in the caravan looked like it was set up.....
Some of it seemed set up, some of it didnt................The business with the petrol station and the trying to turn the bloody thing round seemed gen............and funny
donuticus 17-07-2006, 20:08 True - and it's cheap TV to make certainly for the quality laughs.
It certainly aint cheap. A friend of mine works in the accounts dept at the BBC the budget for that program is scary.
To give you an idea the budget for My Hero is nearly a million quid an episode.

Not surprised the amount of insurance they would have to pay to drive some of the supercaqrs springs to mind - the bugatti vs helicopter program for instance:o :o

Insurance is the cheap bit you can get a traders policy which enables you to drive any vehicle for about 1200 but the fuel budget is pretty impressive as is renting the Airforce Base. There is a good article in this months GQ about Top Gear
I suspect that when you want to insure a supercar for use on a track it costs considerably more.
Fifth gear just said that it cost £900 a day to insure a lambo for track use.
uncleheed 18-07-2006, 07:53 TBH the budget doesn't bother me.
When you pay £131 a year, you need to get at least one programme you enjoy out of it.
I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of television programmes I make a point of watching, and TG is at the top of my list every week.
Top Gear may be expensive to produce, but according to the article in the Sunday Times this weekend, it is sold all over the world - including the States. I wonder if they get Clarkson's humour, especially his slagging off of Yanks.
TheBlueDragon 18-07-2006, 16:03 I think top gear is brilliant. Can you remember the one where they took 3Super Cars (To italy I think) and when they tried to get out of the carpark they couldnt because the cars didnt have enough ground clearence

squeakyclean 20-07-2006, 14:57 I love caravanning, but thought the programme was very funny. Theu could have set fire to something a bit older though, and given the elddis to me:)
I also love flying off on holiday for a couple of weeks every year, so I have the best of both worlds.
You can't beat a caravan holiday for freedom, making new friends, and having a good old laugh.
I used to go caravanning (and indeed with the Caravan Club) when I was in my early teens and actually really enjoyed it - whether it was one of the (many) "rally" weekends, or a longer holiday.
I couldn't stop laughing right through Top Gear though - so obviously staged but hilarious all the same! ;)
Not quite sure how May managed to make such a mess of reversing the van into the spot though - I did it a few times with our (MUCH larger!!) van, and I was 14!
simondjuk 21-07-2006, 08:49 Top Gear is one of the funniest programmes currently running on the BBC
But what is that dog all about?
