View Full Version : My website Mr. Teatime 18-06-2004, 01:00 I've set up a website: http://www.teatime.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/index.html Would appreciate feedback on it... tia Tony 18-06-2004, 05:51 I think it looks good. Very crisp and simple. All the information is clearly presented and organised. Good colour scheme. Why can't more websites be like this instead of having too many bells and whistles that mask the purpose? HotPhil 18-06-2004, 06:01 Are you after feedback on the content or the design? I'm not a web-designer, but here's my tuppence worth: Design wise, I'm personally not a fan of black backgrounds, but that's a taste thing I guess. You may also want to give consideration to making the images smaller (dimensions and/or filesize) - this'll make it quicker to load - especially for non-broadband users. Using the mediun "save for web" option in Photoshop took your image 05110033.JPG from about 128k down to about 22k. If the images are only going to be displayed on the screen, they look fine. I'm viewing the site on a 19" monitor at 1152x864 res. This means that my eye has to scan quite along way along to read each line of your text, personally I'd prefer to see your text divided into columns, making it easier to read. Again, I guess that's a personal thing. Your site's easily navigable, with clearly divided sections which is always a good thing! Content-wise, some of your text is negative; instead of saying "I currently can only play in the Sheffield area, unless travelling expenses are paid for" I'd be tempted to say something positive like "willling and able to play anywhere - please contact me to arrange a performance". You could then thrash out the details with the "booker" later. Basically, if this website is your online presence, be positive in all of it - don't limit yourself or sell yourself short, Go For It Boy! In fact, they may be good advice for life in general..... Hope that's of help. hj dary 18-06-2004, 06:44 On the section called "about me" a fake picture has been used! The evidence? Look at the clock behind the imposter's left shoulder, it is showing the time as before 9 o'clock. You will also notice that there is a lot of sun shining in the room so this must mean its in the am not pm. As we all know , no student gets up before twelve. Either hes not a student or this is another of those Daily Mirror type faked pictures. Squiggs 18-06-2004, 06:59 It's a good start. And agreed on the bells and whistles. I find nothing more annoying than stupid things that float around the screen, all they serve to do is annoy, and prove that the webmaster can find and install pre-written javascript. The one thing I'd look at changing and making more "fancy" is the contact section. Putting email addresses on a site is a sure way to get spam in your email inbox. See, you know how google "spiders" pages to get information? Well spammers use the same tactic, spidering pages indescriminately, to harvest email addresses to sell on to dodgy companies who use spam as their marketting strategy. That's why many people use an email form rather than just a mailto: link take a look at A1 Javascripts (http://www.a1javascripts.com/essential_scripts/) for some email scripts. It's prewritten code but using snippets like that is a good way to learn and see how things work Tony 18-06-2004, 08:54 Good point Squiggs Here is the HTML code that I use - it works a treat. Just change the 2 bits as required <!--webbot bot="HTMLMarkup" startspan --><script language="JavaScript"><!--var name = "INSERT THE NAME THAT GOES BEFORE THE @ SYMBOL HERE"; var domain = "INSERT THE DOMAIN THAT GOES AFTER THE @ HERE";document.write('<a href=\"mailto:' + name + '@' + domain + '\">');document.write(name + '@' + domain + '</a>');// --></script><!--webbot bot="HTMLMarkup" endspan --> Sidla 18-06-2004, 09:31 Where's the link to Sheffield Forum? :o  HotPhil 18-06-2004, 10:22 Where's the link to Sheffield Forum? Can't believe that got left off! JoeP 18-06-2004, 10:33 Not bad at all! the only comments I'd make are that the serifed font used makes the site look a little 'old' - most sites get put up today using a sans-serif font such as Verdana or Arial. Verdana is good - it's nice and web friendly. Also, the font used is a little large - I'd drop it down to 10 or 12 and also bring the size of the pics down a little. You could have a page laid out with a picture on the left and text on the right, then the next section text on teh left and picture on the right. Also, just stick some meta-tags in the top of each page that the search engines can pick up on. Dark background, as someone else mentioned isn't always enjoyed by people. The dark blue on some links will merge in to the current dark green. But not bad at all! Good Luck! Joe Mr. Teatime 18-06-2004, 19:08 Thanks for your feedback, I'll look into some of those suggestions now, as for things like the pictures, they've been resized already. And make a link for Sheffield forum as well... And Tony, how do I use that java script? Currently I have in the HTML, just send me an <a href="mailto:mr_teatime007@hotmail.com">email</a>. I realise most... Plus how do I use meta tags? I really am new to HTML... nomme 18-06-2004, 19:10 Cool music Mr Teatime. You can certainly rattle those ivories. Nomme Mr. Teatime 18-06-2004, 19:41 I think I've sorted out the email, but the meta tags I'm still lost on... Mr. Teatime 27-06-2004, 00:01 Bumping this thread because I've added two new tracks (Primed and Mourn), feedback is welcome. Also finalised the style a bit more. Oh and if you like what you hear I'm playing this coming Friday (see the 'upcoming' part of my webpage). JoeP 27-06-2004, 07:46 Hi there, With regard to Meta Tags, here's an example of a keyword meta tag : <meta name="keywords" content="workshops, training, personal development, Cambridge, booking, review, agency, course, courses, lifestyle, seminar, conference, class, rate, rank, feedback"> This goes at the start of your page behore you go in to the <BODY> tag. If you go around a few pages and do a View Source you'll almost certainly come across a few pages with Meta Tags in for Search Engine keywords. Joe somertswrong 27-06-2004, 12:00 oreght i suppose Bookey 27-06-2004, 13:16 Originally posted by Mr. Teatime I've set up a website: http://www.teatime.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/index.html Would appreciate feedback on it... tia Site is fine but get a hair cut ;) :D Mr. Teatime 27-06-2004, 18:34 Originally posted by Bookey Site is fine but get a hair cut ;) :D Ain't going to happen! |
