I have to admit that there were beads of sweat on my forehead as I struggled to remain sane for the entire 20 seconds it took me to make the thread.

TOSH?!?!?!?
I only post quality stuff! My "nose pickers anonymous" thread was one of the best ones ever made, and as for the "bed bug blues", what can I say? It was a classic!

'Tosh' is a bit harsh! Quite enjoyed this thread, imagining Defoe pottering around our fair city almost 300 years ago.

I dont know what you mean at all, my good woman! Ill have you know that I was offered an award for "Best post of the decade" by the forums owner but I turned it down because I consider myself to be a public neccessity. My posts are important and vital for the people of Sheffield.
Give me one, just ONE example of tosh that I posted (In the past 3 seconds) and Ill freely admit to the world that I post tosh!

No need for the ticking finger or the rolling eyes - I realised your post was in jest, I was just being appreciative of the thread.

No, it’s not tosh, it is quality material and very interesting. Just imagine transporting all our heavy goods to Bawtry which is our nearest seaport. From there goods could be shipped all over the world, and if for example they wanted the goods to go to London, it was easier to do it by sea and river rather than across country. I did hear that one of the Steel firms had two elephants to help carry heavy loads and until recently there were people living who could remember them.

I see the Halifax Gibbet is mentioned and there is a picture of it here (2nd picture down)

There is a map showing the ancient Hallamshire boundary here. If you scroll down you can see me as I look now and also as I was when a child with my dog, along with a picture of me with my granddaughter.

Here is a map of Bawtry showing the roads of the day. Attercliffe Road went to Tinsley and from there to Bawtry.

And here is a map of the River Calder (bottom of page) showing Wakefield which is mentioned in that piece you gave us, notice the location of Robin Hood’s grave which fits the description of the great antiquary Roger Dodsworth.

I hope you enjoy the pictures.

For anyone interested in the Halifax Gibbet this site is excellent.

http://www.metaphor.dk/guillotine/Pages/gibbet.html

One thing it doesn’t tell us is that if someone was executed for stealing a pig for example, then a rope was attached to the pin that released the blade and the rope was tied to a pig. When the pig walked away the pin was pulled out and the blade fell, thus decapitating the thief.

Therefore it could be said, “The man killed a pig, a pig killed the man.” Not only was this seen as poetic justice but it also meant that no one could be accused of murder, therefore they had immunity from the law as it was a pig who had killed the miscreant.
