Hi, I'm part of a team of researchers at The University of Sheffield, who are interested in how larger women, who are considered by themselves or others to be very overweight, experience pregnancy and becoming a mum.

This is because pregnancy and the arrival of a new baby is a time when ideas aroung food and eating habits may change, for various reasons. The project is part of a larger research programme based in Sheffield called 'Changing Families, Changing Food' funded by The Leverhulme Trust.

Our project is sociological in focus, we are not dieticians or health professionals looking to change women's or families' eating habits, we are simply interested in how larger women think about food and feeding their babies and children in a family context. We recognise that for some women, irrespective of their size, this is a sensitive issue and that women may have had unpleasant experiences because of their weight. We are not looking to pass judgements.

If you (or a friend) are pregnant and anticipating motherhood for the first time or are a mother of at least one child between the ages of nine months and two years old, we'd like to meet you!

What would be involved?
If you're currently pregnant we'd like to meet and interview you three times (1 hr). Once in the last 2-3 months of your pregnancy, once when your baby is 3-4 months old and again when they are 6-9 months old. If you'd like to, you can also, between interviews, use a disposible camera we'd supply to take pictures of food in your family life. We'd discuss the pictures you've taken at the next interview and you would get to keep them.

If you're already a mum with at least one child between 9 months and 2 years old there would just be a one-off, 1 hr interview.

We can cover any childminding costs, and if you'd prefer not to be interviewed at home can arrange another private venue and cover transport costs.

The interviews are not simply question - answer. they are intended to run like a normal conversation and you can discuss issues you think are important to the project.
