View Full Version : I Miss My Hendersons!!!
DeanCahill 13-07-2006, 20:55 Having left the 'right side of the Pennines' in '86 and then had the unfortunate pleasure of Lancashire 'til '98,it wasn't that difficult to get hold of the black stuff in a bottle for my chips and pies or a good splash on my stew!! Now i live here in Taunton Somerset and now it's not as easy.On my last visit up in God's greatest county i bought 10 bottles from a store in Stocksbridge and the lady who served me almost fell off her chair in amazement and didn't know what to do or say when i said " i love it on my Cornflakes!!" Now i'm down to my last bottle and it's being used sparingly until i get up to Sheffield next weekend!!!
Old_Bloke 13-07-2006, 21:09 So what's the difference between Hendersons and Branston then? Is one sweeter? Does one have more of a bite?
DeanCahill 13-07-2006, 21:32 One,for me, goes very well wit me chips and the other on a cheese sarnie!!! I don't think i'd do it the other way!!! Off me head, i'd say Branston is the sweeter one of the 2 and that Hendersons is more of a tangy with a touch of spice and is up there as a good reason why chips were invented,in my book that is anyway!!!!!
sweetdexter 13-07-2006, 22:05 On another thread someone said you can take your own container to Hendersons and they will fill it .
Don't know if it's true.
My sister brings it to me here in Canada in a 1 gallon jug.
She has connections in the restaurant business so this may help

Where do you come from? i cant be sheffield as there are loads on sale at all morrisons , asda, joblot, and all green grocers and the small mini markets in sheffield.
stop saying things like this as it is untrue. The old shop may have closed down but they have moved to the parkway markets and are still going strong. We have friends who send relish to new zealand, australia, usa infact we have relations who send it all over the world, [it is known out there as black gold]
they sell the big ones on ebay lol...

Hi Dean
I work for Parcelforce and we used to collect from hendersons and deliver it around the world to Sheffield ex pats who needed the sheffield home comfort.
If you give them a ring i'm sure they send you down an emergency load.
Regards
Ken
SaxonLeigh 21-07-2006, 10:48 i moved to doncaster & missed my hendo's not that far away i know. me & my mum used to do a swap, she looked all over for mushroom stroganoff packets which i could get so she bought me relish & i got her the packets. last time she got me 3 bottles, two red & white stripe bottles & an orange lable bottle, the next day i went to my local corner shop & they sell it in there now. it's slowly getting sold out side of sheffield which is good i supose but i loved the fact that they only sold it there as it was part of buying it, having to go to sheffield specially for the hendo's.
Weigh & Save in Exmouth now sell the stuff, so no more trips to Sheffield for me, (well not for that anyway)
Check other W&S?
GrinderBloke 22-07-2006, 00:28 Weigh & Save in Exmouth now sell the stuff

Tommy (Bass) 22-07-2006, 00:33 I'm lucky enough to have my bottle of Hendersons sent to me with a personalised label. Home made chips and Hendersons made me the man I am today, so I'll be contacting my lawyers soon :D

Cliffhanger 22-07-2006, 21:07 If anyone's ever marooned in North Warks, the Plough at Mancetter (just off the A5) has Hendo's on every table. Landlord picks it up on walking trips to the Peaks. Crackin pies too. Luckily he's happy to sell me the odd bottle too!
sweetdexter 24-07-2006, 20:25 Eat your heart out all you ex-pats who are far away.

i came home to sheff last year but couldn't bring any back due to the security alert on liquids. boo . just finished the last drop .
It says on this website that the secret ingredient to Hendersons relish is Sheffield tap water! Apparantly the quality of Sheffield tap water has a distinctive taste and if it was to be produced in any other place then it would taste very different.

Hi Just joined this site and saw this thread about Hendersons :):):)
I moved down to Dorset several years ago and havent really been back to Conisborough, and so consequently Ive missed out on my Hendersons.:(:(:(
We used to put it on everything but not sure about putting it on cornflakes:roll:
Have Henderson's discovered a new way to get us all to consume more Relish? Yesterday, I sat down for my tea, knife and fork in hand, drooling over my steaming plate of hash and dumplings. Picking up a new bottle of Relish, I unscrewed the cap and turned the bottle over to give a few good shakes and squirts. In an instant, my dumplings and gravy were mixed with half a bottle of Relish. The crafty people at Henderson's had omitted the plastic squirter thing from the bottle top. Did I throw my tea away? Don't be daft, it was delicious.
Can anyone else remember the days before the plastic squirter thing when we used to stick the tin opener into the bottle cap?
lennonman 27-09-2007, 15:00 I moved to London a year ago and i know it sounds daft but i really missed Hendersons, not just the taste but the orangy red label! Last time i went back home i bought two bottles and now my partner is into it too! The spiritual home for Hendersons was Butlers dining rooms near Jessops Hospital, where the windows were steamed up every day with home made pies with proper crusts. Not there any more which is a massive shame.....god im getting hungry now!!!!
midvixen 27-09-2007, 15:18 Well, I didn't know what to do for tea, but now I think it's off to the chippy then back home and drown my chip butty in relish!!
YUM!!!!:love::love:
Gingerbarf 27-09-2007, 19:08 I was lucky, visited dad a fortnight ago and he had a 2 litre pop bottle full of Hendo's so i confiscated it to bring back down with me, had Pie and chips for tea tonight covered in Hendo's. oh how i've missed my Hendo's
dynamicdebz 27-09-2007, 20:54 I took myn sisterb several bottlesm to turkey where she lives the other week, along with weetabix & tampax.

ah that explains my question, why not just copy the bottle & make your own? with a little trial & error & the web full of recipes,Ithink the tap water is just a red herring meant to put you off:suspect::suspect:
