I have a G4 desktop iMac which connects to the internet via a cable modem (supplied by Telewest). This modem connects to my ethernet port of the iMac.
I am about to buy a used G4 laptop and wish to network the computers wirelessly and share the internet connection.
The seller of the laptop proposes to sell me a third party wireless router for just over £100 which will plug into my modem and transmit a signal which my laptop (which has an AirPort card) can pick up. The desktop Mac is situated near the modem and so doesn't need to be wireless for the purposes of net access.
Is this going to work?... my concerns are:
1 The cable modem has only one ethernet port - so will I be able to plug both the desktop Mac and the wireless router into it simultaneously? Can I daisychain them?
2 As the desktop Mac has no AirPort card will I be able to share files? Is installing such a card difficult (the desktop is the one with the white hemispehrical body)?
3 Is the proposed solution rather expensive?
Thanks
your wireless router should have a few wired ports, most have four some only have one
so you connect the cable modem into the WAN port of the wireless router
any cabled devices can now connect to the LAN UTP ports
once at least one device is cabled you can use this to set up the wifi on the router for the wireless devices
file and printer sharing will be completely transparent all machines wired or wifi will be able to see each other
my major concern would be the wifi router, it must not be an ADSL router something like this beastie is what you need (http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=311B&CategorySelectedId=11177&NavigationKey=11177,4294959957&v=2#infoarea) NB this is an example I'm not recommending it or dissing it
or you could just wire both machines and get a non wifi router
I've got no idea if its expensive or not, sounds fairly reasonable to me

You can buy a decent router from Argos for around £60 which should have around four ethernet ports. You can network them by ethernet and run both via the router > adsl. Or just buy a third party Airport card from ebuyer. You can then wifi it all.
oh and the router I pointed you at is £33.53 inc vat so £100 is probably a bit ott
