View Full Version : All You Can Eat
no1machinist 13-07-2006, 08:12 I went to an all you can eat smorgasborg last week and was really looking forward to it untill I got to the counters loaded with food and nothing at all took my fancy. Thats how it feels being away from home, nothing hits the spot. Life is comfortable here but I am completely surrounded by no Yorkshire folk. Whats it all worth if you are away from your kin? One day follows another till you die so I'm packing a case and coming home. Get a pint of tetleys in for me.
Regards
theres no place like home
I know how you feel No 1, I went through that stage many times in the 70's & 80's, even though I was surrounded by Yorkshire blokes,I worked in the coalmines for 10 years in Wollongong & had a stint in the steelworks, they named it little England because of all the Pommies that lived in this area, especially from Sheffield & Rotherham.
I went back to Sheffield in 92 & stayed for 3 weeks, one of the weeks were spent with one of my Brother's who lives in Blackpool as I found Sheffield very depressing, I realised during that time that I had done the right thing coming to Oz after all.
I love where we live as we get a lot of people from Yorkshire visiting families, & I love to hear the old accent again, anyway luv, keep thi chin up, are tha just guin back for a pint or fa gud.

nanrobbo 14-07-2006, 03:55 Hi no1, I've lived in Oz now for 33years and still have longings for home, but my family is here and I have only a few close relatives left in Sheffield. If I may give a few words of advice- think first of all the reasons that made you want to come to Oz, they are still going to be the same if you go back. Whatever you choose to do Good Luck in the future.
PS where are you in Oz if I may ask?
Have lived in Oz for 54 years now and wouldn't change it for anything, even though I still love Sheffield and am proud to have been born there. But there are still things I miss as far as food is concerned.
Don_Kiddick 14-07-2006, 06:11 My mates in Oz - he's called Ewan - maybe you've seen him?
no1machinist 14-07-2006, 07:38 Yea Don I Know him well, Ewan Meboth, spits alot and walks backwards. Perhaps I have not been totaly honest, I have no intention of ever living in Sheffield again, the colonials are welcome to it. I will be living on a farm in Devon with friends near a country pub called the Muddiford, anybody know it? It's not far from Ilfracoombe. I intend to visit Sheffield first though if I can get an Indian visa.
It's hard to leave Brisbane and I'm not on the plane yet so owt could happen but our lass is keen as mustard and her vote is what counts, funny thing is she's Ozzie and loves England too.
Gud umour No1, I ampt erd that for a while, I'll be getting a lot u that next munth wen my owd naybor cums to stay wee us for a few days on his tour ur Oz, we ampt seen each other for abaht 40 years & only made contact ageean last year.
If you have no ties here, married kids, kids schooling etc, why not look at other options, you only get one crack at life, my wife always says that if she finishes up in an old peoples home, she wants to talk about what she has done in life & not what she wished she had done.
As for me, Australia has given me everything I've ever wanted & more, but being a Sheffielder & growing up there in it's hey day was something else, there's nowt wrong with the Old Dart, it's some of the people that are the problem & unfortunately this is now worldwide.
