He's a nice convenient scapegoat, but if Beckham hadn't missed the penalty we wouldn't be talking of such things... at least Heskey works hard for his team, unlike Sir Michael of Owen, who seems to get increasingly rubbish with age!

fair point, but do you really think hes really good enough at intenational level. as 4 owen i dont see him having a good tournament but who else can he play besides owen and rooney. not exactly awash with top strikers r we.

Whats wrong with Vassell?

He runs his heart out and must be worth an extended run in place of the jaded Owen

You what? I think we've got heaps of great strikers at the mo! On current form James Beattie and Jermain Defoe should be in the squad. You could even make an argument for Alan Smith as well. As I say on form they've all had a better season than Owen. Do you watch football at all?

I know Owen has done it in the past big style, but even the best players can suffer a bit of a dip in form. We should be bold enough to dump our stars/heroes if they're not playing well.

you no and so does everyone that owen was always gunna be first choice, form or not if erikson dint pick him hed be 4 the high jump. as 4 smith hes a liability in a tournament like this and cant keep is head. some players are cast iron certs and the players you mentioned barring vassell dont have a chance in such a big tournament.

I understand where you are coming from about Owen being first choice, but I think that attitude is wrong. I'm a Gooner and a big fan of Thierry, but if he was to start losing it, I would say let Bentley or whoever was on form have a shot. It's about winning games/trophies not some kind of fan club. Alex Ferguson had a lot of success through that "no one player is bigger than the club" mentality.

Maybe that's where we go wrong.

Let Vassell have a full match he's quality - pace, strength and shooting ability. Owen has one skill which all defenders now know about - head down and chase the ball, cut in and shoot!

Vassell not only works for the ball rather than wait for it but he also scares defenders cos he looks like 2pac Shakur.

I can't understand why David Beckham took the penalty. Barthez used to be his team mate, so must have known exactly where he was going to put the ball.

Surely a player of Beckhams ability isn't going to go same side everytime. If Bartez did know that was his preferred side then he must have also known that Beckham knew that he knew and was liable to switch it. Basically Bartez took a gamble and it paid off.

i agree that when he comes on he's quality but he never seems to perform for 90 minutes. He's had poor games for england when he's started - so personally i'd exploit his pace and use him as a 'supersub'
great to be able to bring someone with that pace though when opposition teams legs are tired
