View Full Version : Hayfever question ...
Could someone please help diagnose my feeling of extreme fatigue during this heavy weather.
I never really had hayfever as a youth but have started over the last couple of years to get symptoms i.e. headaches, fatigue and to a lesser extent sneezing, runny nose/eyes etc.
My main gripe is the feeling of extreme fatigue. I was like this before i went abroad a couple of weeks ago, fine on holiday and now feeling tired again now i've been back a few days.
Everything is a stuggle - the gym, concentrating at work etc etc.
Does anyone else feel like this right now?
Jabberwocky 11-07-2006, 10:20 Did you ever get heat or sunstroke in the past?
I always feel tired when my hayfever is really bad, especially when it's coupled to the hot and humid weather. Are you taking anti-histamines? Maybe you need to try an alternative brand.
If you're worried, you really should see your GP.
Jabberwocky 11-07-2006, 10:29 I know people who suffered from heatstroke years ago and even today they seem to suffer in hot weather.
Im just glad I grew out of my hayfever when I was an urchin. Its horrible isnt it.
DeViL_WoMaN 11-07-2006, 10:30 Well I am a 100% hayfever sufferer. I get the streaming/itchy eyes, the chronic sneezing, ictchy nose, itchy throat. I have suffered with these symptoms since I was 12, and I cannot say that I've ever had headaches or had fatigue.
Best thing to do would be to go to the doctors and explain your symptoms and see what they say. I wouldn't go googling the symptoms as 9 times out of 10 the internet will tell you that you have some sort of life threatening disease when the case is not so.
Best bet, Doctors!

I sometimes take Clarityn but don't seem to feel any different?!?
The symptoms of headache/fatigue do tend to be most apparent when pollen counts are high but it's odd that i don't suffer badly from sneezing/runny nose - i get more 'bunged up' and pressure in my ears.
If this sounds normal for hayfever maybe i should try another anti-histamine.
Thanks.
Jabberwocky 11-07-2006, 10:33 A doc told me to eat locally produced honey because it immunises your system against the local pollen.

The above statement is very true. It helps you immune system get used to the pollen in that area, and makes your hayfever less potent than normal.
I also get headaches and fatigue with hayfever and Clarityn don't work for me either, the best ones i've found to work are Benadryl Plus. They contain a decongestant as well as the anti-histimines and you take 2 or 3 a day. They cost around £7 for 24 tablets but to me it's worth it if they work! Why don't you try using a nasal spray too? Beconase is good.

Seeing as I pay £9.49 for 24 Benadryl Plus can you tell me who's selling them for £7!!!
I don't get headaches as such with the hayfever, I get them quite easily on their own ;), but if I'm really bad with it I always end up going to bed because I'm so tired thru sneezing, etc., that I just want to go to sleep, so it's possible that this is the reason you're feeling fatigued. I also have to be careful I don't put my back out sneezing, which is a distinct possibility for me :(
Ginger_Kitty 11-07-2006, 12:02 I get very tired with hayfever, doesn't matter if i'm on medication or not (if i'm not i'm horribly ill!) I jsut find it a very tiring condition. Even when its not really hot i'm tired so it can't be a heat thing for me, sadly i jsut either have more coffee (badbad me) or go to bed earlier :(

Are you sure you're not dehydrated?
Are you sure you're not dehydrated?
Doubtful, i easily drink 2-3 litres of water a day.
Maybe i'm just stuck in holiday mode.
Zzzzzzzz.
it's surprising how much it takes out of you when your body is battling with outside forces - and lets face it, that's what it thinks pollen is ;)
(I've had to to resort to Piriton this year, as other antihistemines weren't working. if you ask your pharmacist to order you a box of 500 you can expect to pay around £8 )

The pharmacy in Tesco at Infirmary Road sells them in packs of 12 for about £3.60 iirc. Been a while since I've been in there though cos I've moved to Waterthorpe.
Pritt Stick 11-07-2006, 13:13 I'm allergic to grass and tree pollen - was v bad up until a few days ago when my symptons eased. Either that type of pollen is now reduced or my medication has kicked in (Nasobec Spray and Neo-Clarityn tablets). Any thoughts anyone? Or any similar experiences?
Not a clue which pollen I'm specifically allergic to. I start with it in March and finish at the end of July if I'm lucky. My peak is round about the end of June usually. But dust sets me off all year round. I only found out in recent years that your body produces histamines to combat the pollen/dust, etc., so you have to take drugs to stop your body doing what comes naturally to it

I have had Hay fever all my life and it always starts in May and seems to ease in mid July.
I believe beeche pollums are rife in the early part of summer then some other pollum takes over which is when my suffering stops.
I was bad yesterday but fine today, maybe its about to change.
evildrneil 11-07-2006, 21:33 I'm the same unisol - never had hay fever before am suddenly getting it along with fatigue, sore throat, sneezing etc. I wonder if the pollen is extra bad this year? The other possibility for myself is that I had a bad time last year with a constant low grade chest problem which became pneumonia and that could have sensitised - have you had any long term respiratory problems?

I got mine from ASDA's chemist the other day for just over £7. Was in Doncaster at the time though so might not be much help!
Jabberwocky 11-07-2006, 22:43 Is there a Savers in Sheffield?
They sell a good hayfever pill for 99p. It does the job without drowseyness.
Why spend a bomb for something thatll do the same job for a fraction of the price?
