View Full Version : Beckham says "Ya know."
Just to lighten the atmosphere (after my previous rants), I was wondering if anyone else on here has noticed how many times Beckham says "Ya know" when he's speaking.
My lads and I have been keeping count and so far the record is 13 in a 55 second interview last night.
Listen carefully next time he's on.
It's as though "Ya know" replaces commas in Beckham-speak, and it's painful listening once you notice it.
Listening to most footballers giving interviews is painful because they have IQs lower than their shirt numbers.

And they have obscene bank balances cos they are way WAY overpaid IMHO.
Hey Markham, you really do have a problem don't you?
Which perfect world do you live in?
Most of us live in the real one where some people are more intelligent than others.
Having a higher IQ doesn't make you any better than a person with a lower IQ.
Andy
God Andyman, you ain't half got a problem with other's opinions.
t020's comment, to which I agreed, was obviously a light-hearted dig at football players in general.
Bet you're a riot at parties.:loopy:
And by the way, isn't one of your past posts stating that Chubby Brown isn't as funny now since he's gone all PC?
Double standards, or what?:loopy: :loopy:

lol well said
I do agree that it is unfair how much footballers get paid, in particular the England team when evidently they are not really that good enough
In addition with Beckham saying "you know". It is pretty stupid that he says it but "you know" (sorry couldn't resist) other footballers do it also.
watch out how many times he says 'obviously'!
the question of what footballers get paid:
well they get paid a lot of money for a reason i.e they draw in the fans or contribute to the success of a team (and it's subsequent marketability) so in those terms - of course all they do is kick a ball but that's like saying that pop stars get paid too much - all they do is sing! but popstars and footballers are all marketable so it's all relative - they have a talent (in most cases) so good luck to them
it's interesting to note that the Crystal Palace V West Ham Utd play off final was the richest prize ever for a sporting event - it was worth £35million to the winner on the outcome of one game

Nothing light-hearted that I can see. Even your sig is having a dig at Beckham. Re-read some of your posts, you are obsessed with the guy.
You have a problem there, envy, resentment, who knows.
Your unhealthy regard for Beckham is admirable.
However, a Beckham joke, an observation about his diction and a signature which dwells on a quote from an interview hardly indicates a one man hate campaign. He may be YOUR hero, but to some he isn't. I don't hate him, he's just another celebrity open to public comment.
And as this thread is simply asking whether others have noticed 'Beckham's' interview techniques, then obviously he is going to get mentioned. It's a drawback of celebrity. Just like many other celebrities have been slated on here with not a word in their defence from you.
Envy? Resentment? Of what?!!!! For Christ's sake, he's only a footballer. If I wanted to envy anyone it would be someone who gets paid well for doing a worthwhile job.
Greenback 17-06-2004, 11:18 Everyone has verbal tics to some degree - even, *shock horror* - those who have been educated at private schools, away from the smelly working-class riff-raff. Those born with silver spoons in their mouths just can't seem to accept the fact that these highly skilled lads who are (mostly) from poor backgrounds are earning more than themselves.
It's the politics of envy, and it's pathetic.

QED.

No its not envy - its just so annoying that when they do get well paid, the excuse they come out with is "Well, my career finishes at (say) 35, and I've got to have something to live on" or words to that effect. The problem is they always want more.
I'm not envious - I earn a good wage. But even if I worked for 50 years earning what I'm earning now, I would still end up earning almost £1m less in my whole working life than what someone on £50k a week would earn in a year!

But if they earned less, then admission prices wouldn't be so high and more people might go to watch football at the lower levels as well as at the higher ones.
No, I'm not jealous - I just get annoyed when they bleat on about how long their earnings have to last them for. Its a feeble excuse.
and what happens when there carrers end , there never off the tele. david seamen 4 example he retires and hes straight into adverts ete, so that cobblers about it being a short career is rubbish at the top end of football.

And which private school educated, silver-spoon-in-mouth individual are you refering to. If it's t020, HE didn't start this thread, I did!!
And guess what, I am "smelly working-class riff-raff" from a poor background who agrees with the people who think that it takes no more skill to be an international footballer, than to be a good bricklayer or painter and decorator.
Footballers demand higher wages, which in turn puts entrance fees up, which in turn makes watching them too pricey for very poor people. The same poor people who you claim a lot of these footballers used to be. If they cared at all about the fans they would drop their wages enabling ticket prices to drop.
My son saved up for last season's season ticket at Hillsborough. He adoringly went to every home match but came home almost it tears after every game.. The clowns who were failing him on the pitch so badly, however, went home after the match laughing all the way to the bank.
You pay a decorator for his skills and you get your money back if he doesn't deliver the goods.
So basically, as football players are constantly taking the p*** out of the public, aren't the public entitled to take the said p*** out of them in return?

On the first point, I wasn't referring to anyone specifically, but there is a general feeling amongst many people, especially in the media, that because footballers generally come from poorer backgrounds they're less entitled to earn big money.
And on the second point, you're quite clearly wrong. It does take more skill to be a footballer, that's obvious - or else there would be thousands of people in this country who are good enough to play for Manchester United or whoever, and there aren't.

Nonsense. Chairmen give out the contracts, so they're ultimately responsible for how much footballers are paid - to blame the players themselves is short-sighted. Why should they sell themselves short?

On your first point, I have never heard anyone, media or otherwise, claiming that footballers should be on lower wages because they're from poorer backgrounds.
On your second point, there probably are thousands of people, men and women, who are skilled enough to play for Man Utd or whoever, but maybe they'll never get discovered nor have the chance to prove it. And as for it taking more skill to be a footballer than a plasterer, decorator, builder and a thousand other trades, that is rubbish. No skill is better than any other. Professional footballers may be able to dribble, tackle, juggle the ball and fall down at will where a roof thatcher can't, but a roof thatcher can do his job which a footballer can't.
Chairmen give out the contracts in accordance with the footballer's demands. If a club doesn't offer enough, the player tells him to stuff it. So ultimately, the players are calling the shots and as a result are pricing a lot of supporters out of the game.
And finally, sport, but in particular football, is the only job I know of where the employees can fail to do the job but still get paid well. Maybe no pay for a defeat (and gate receipts refunded), half wages for a draw (and half gate receipts refunded) and full wages for a win only might be a little fairer on the supporters.
Perhaps "ya know" is a brand name. Imagine how much richer he was after that interview.

Never thought of that. The crafty bu88ers!!!!
You'd think they'd let us know what it is, and where to get it.
Ahh well that could be the ploy. Get us all talking about it, keep it a mystery then BOOM out pops "YA KNOW" the latest craze in ??????
well, ya know I ya know counted 19 ya know examples ya know in the post-match interview ya know the one with ya know, Beckham tonight
y'know, obviously i thought y'know it was just me who had y'know, obviously spotted this but y'know I'm glad other people have too, y'know.
I cannot physically y'know concentrate on what Beckham, y'know is saying now because y'know I have to count, y'know obviously how many times y'know he says 'Y'know'
y'know?
obviously.
y'know?
Beckham has never been very fluent in interviews; I lose track of how many times he says 'y'know'!
The best interviews in football, I believe, are with Gordon Strachan and Claudio Ranieri. Both very animated people indeed :D
