View Full Version : How important is money to you?

As a student, I don't have that much. Im also aware how lucky I really am just to have a roof over my head and food to eat.

What does money mean to you personally? Would you work in a job you hated but paid you really really well? Or would you rather have a job that paid you little which you really loved? How hard, and for how long, would you be prepared to work just to have lots of money? Are you content or do you find yourself wishing you had more, in terms of material things?

I remember my dad saying to me, money doesn't make you happy and that's true, but you could say it brings you choices and opportunities - which could make you happy...

What do you think?

Who ever said the phrase 'Money cant buy happiness'
Is a fool and probably was someone poor

Money makes my world go round- sorry if thats sounds horrible- but it pays the bills and keeps myself and my family in the manner in which we are acustomed to.. if I work hard and get the cash we spend it on living life to the full.

I wouldnt work in a job I loved for little pay though- unless - I could use my talents outside of work to bring in more cash, then that would be cool.

money means nothing to me... i always know i can make some if need be.

used to work in a job like that... never again!

yep... doing something you love is the way forward

wouldn't work hard or long just for money... so long as i enjoyed life i couldn't care less

i used to be driven by material things... now i couldn't care less...

personally i think money is a pain in the ass! and the cause of god only knows how many problems and ill feeling in the world... shame i'll never see the day when it finally gets abolished

I used to be obsessed with it. But I was constantly skint.
Now I`m older and have more money than I need I can definately say that its unimportant.
If you dont have something, its more reason to want it, once you have it, you realise that it was never that important anyway.

Angelus I know some people who work so many hours a week for big salaries but I can't imagine they actually have much free time to actually spend the money or spend with their family or friends so that makes me think 'what's the point in that then'!

I'd like enough money to be able to have experiences like travelling, seeing my favourite bands and djs whenever I wanted :)

I used to work 15 hour shifts six days per week, and although I got a huge wage, I paid through the nose in Tax plus I never had time to spend all of my dosh.
I`m glad that I no longer have to worry about it now.

Erm. I still do the lottery though so I cant be THAT glad.

Being a fellow student, money isnt plentiful for me either
However, I've come to find that in the past month or so, despite having nothing at all and not being able to go out (at all) I have managed to find enjoyment in other people and appreciate those around me so much more!
Times are really hard for me right now, but things are on the up... I'm working in a pub/restaurant and also looking for another job to earn me some more cash... :D
I'm not too bothered about not having money... As long as I have my friends/family/boyfriend, then I can get through anything! A night out wouldnt go amiss, especially as I'm expecting my first year results in just over a month... but its not the end of the world if I cant go out...

Am looking forward to October time, when I am finally straight with my money... and have enough cash to treat those who have supported me through a crap few months! :D

Money is the be all and end all.

I'll agree with this statement in my current situation. When you aren't earning enough to pay off your debts, the bills and your food and rent, money is everything. I want a job where I'm happy and am going to sacrifice having a huge salary for that, I just need enough money to live off comfortably.

like ma dad always used to say...money is the drug that underpins everything. ppl do stupid things for it, and ppl do stupid things if they dnt have it.
i crave for more anyway lol.

Agree with you miss.
Whats the point in working all hours if you cant spend your earnings and life with your family!

Which is why I have a fab job- pays reasonably well- but I have my fingers in other pies outside of my main job outside of work to keep the cash rolling in nicely so I can treat my family and friends very well.

I earn a pittance doing a job I love, most I ever earned at a job was £13,500pa but I hated it so much it was ruining my life. At the moment my outgoings are almost as much as my earnings, so things are tough but it won't be forever as I'm getting on top of things slowly.
I'd like to live comfortably and be able to decide to go to the pub or pictures whenever I feel like it, and have a holiday, but I've got no desire to be a millionaire. Can't understand why anyone needs to be! Just greed I guess. :(

I've been a student and been in the situation where I had £50 to last me a month. It's not pleasant, but if it's what you're used to then you just get on with it.

If your expenditure exceeds your income (and you can't realistically reduce it) then you'll probably do whatever it takes to get the money.

If it's the other way around, then you'll probably just find new ways to spend the money, until you get used to having that much money.

Everyone is different, but at the moment I'm happy with my wage and with how hard I have to work for it. I wouldn't work a lot harder unless I was offered much much more money, and if the latter occured, then it would only be a temporary thing with the money being put away for the future.
I could certainly manage on less money, but I won't reduce how hard I work and take less money, as I'm not worried about working too hard at the moment.
For example, I could probably change to a 4 day week if I wanted too and take a 20% cut in pay, but at the moment the extra day off isn't worth the less money.
Recently we had the opportunity to do some overtime at time+half. I could probably over a fortnight have done 50 hrs if I really wanted the cash, but I did about 20, and that was mainly because I knew the work needed doing, it wasn't for the money.

At the end of the day you makes your choices and you takes your pay, if I wanted more pay, I could move to London, but since I hate the place i'm not prepared to do that.

Bit of a rambling brain dump, hope that made sense.

Very true, along the same lines as you don't miss summat till it's gone. Being rather skint tonight, I'm reminded of the old phrase that "Money cannot buy you happiness, but it gets you one HELL of a better standard of misery ......"

I dont really want for anything now, I have tons of gadgets and crap that I always wanted when I was skint, and if something new comes on the market, Its easy enough for me to buy even though im chucking money down the drain most of the time, ill buy crap like this (http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i159/Doppler1/SANY0030-1.jpg) without batting an eyelid.
My real pleasures today cost me nothing, walking in the countryside for example is something I try to do each day. I suppose its just a sign of old age.

I think my problem is my hobbies are a bit expensive so if I didn't have money I might have to take up free stuff like bird-watching.....which isn't very interesting to me.

In many ways it would have made me incredibly happy winning that £100m not so long ago.....there would rather a lot of millionaires around! Who really needs that much money, I'd make all my closest friends and family millionaires at least, give lots to charity etc....pick a random homeless person and give them a house or something :)

how important is money- its everything.

without it, i wouldnt be sat with a roof over my head, a full tummy after my dinner, typing on a computer to use my broadband to reply to this post.

without it i wouldnt see my friends or my family as on the whole, they all live out of sheffield.

i dont know if money can buy ultimate happiness, but it allows my to live my life in a comfortable manner even if sometimes i dont have enough to do all the things i dream of.

mind you, if i stopped ******* most of it up the wall, i might! lol :)

Isn't it all relevent to how much you have? To those who have plenty I doubt it can be very important, to those who have little, it's crucial.
The lack of money in our house causes misery so yes, money would make me happy. However, if I had enough to do everything I want, then I doubt it would be of such importance and it would never cause misery.

Having enough to live on is crucially important, beyond that it's a question of luxury and it depends whether you need luxury to be happy - I like to have spare money but to tell the truth, I'm happy when I have money and I'm happy when I don't.

Do wish I had a bit spare at the moment so that I could go travelling, but I'm finding free things to do that are just about as entertaining and chances are I might be able to generate some cash anyway. Um, summary - does matter, but beyond a basic level necessary for subsistence tends to be secondary to other things. I haven't ever had much money though so can't really talk about the experience of being fabulously or even slightly wealthy.

When people say 'money is everything' - is it? Like Caprice said, she's found so much pleasure and happiness in enjoying people more - there's loads you can do without lots of it. Even when I'm really struggling I still don't feel like money is everything. All of us here are actually lucky enough that we aren't starving and depite going through hard times, we have enough to eat and pay the rent and that's as far as it goes for me probably.

When I have none, I do miss going out and would rather go without something else than miss out on a night out! Suppose everyone has their luxeries and loves...

so long as you have enough to keep you fed, sheltered and relatively comfortable it matters very little like most things in life.

you can have all the money in the world but one day you will die and nothing is going to stop that so i suggest that you take the relatively short leisure time you have and spend it wisely in the company of people you love doing things that make you happy.

I'm answering your thread without reading it as its a great question.

Well to me money is a life controlling entity, regardless of how you feell. If you have lots of it then your happy, comfortable, relaxed, etc.

If you don't have much money then your either in the army, taxi driving, on bennefits, selling drugs, some capitalist criminal activty, living on the streets, Oh and some people have a sensble job too :suspect: Please tell me what one of these sensible jobs are?

Money means sod-all to me but it's VERY important to the people who have massive influence on my life - you know - banks, mortgage holders, etc. :)

My attitude now is to get enough money to be comfortable; then in a perfect world I'd like to acquire some 'Screw You' money - maybe up to 10 milllion - that would allow me to indulge me and my family in a lazily modest (non-millionaire) lifestyle for the rest of my days, with enough security to tell people to 'Screw You'. :)

You can't eat the stuff, it doesn't provide much heat when burnt, and is a lousy conversationalist. :)

Every Saturday when I find I have only got one number on my lottery ticket, its always a case of 'Oh well, work on Monday' :hihi:
I know what you mean about its conversational abilities too.

It's only important in that you need it to buy things, like food.
Having money for it's own sake is dumb.

Though I'm sure certain people would like to think differently, we all need money in life. It's just amounts and degrees!

It's only when we lose someone really special to us, or we become really ill that we realise that no matter how much money we have, there really are some things that it just can't buy!

I have love in my life, and frankly, you can't put a price on that!

We're long dead, unfortunately! I'm bandless at the moment but definitely looking (guitarist). Anyway, back to the topic...

I was thinking today, how cool would it be to just sell everything you own and start all over again? I've made plenty of bad purchasing decisions and I'm sure I could use the money better if I had it all at once. I think the only things I couldn't bear to see go are my favourite electric and acoustic guitar, but the rest is just frills. Kind of tempted, actually.

Flashy displays of wealth are vulgar and no matter how much you got it cant buy taste !

I've always been a hoarder of money. Drawers full of pennies etc. I still stop to pick up pennies I see on the street. Probably a natural reaction to being relatively poor as a kid and it meant I've always been very cautious (tight) about money. This was until I got my present job and realised I had enough money squirreled away in the bank to start spending it. Now my money provides me with expensive holidays.

As someone (Cyclone?) said earlier the more money you have the more you tend to spend it. There are people on way more money than me at work but in real terms they are poorer because what they get they spend. They are working to keep still whereas I always spend way less than I get so my bank balance increases month by month until the holiday spendfest arrives.
