My sister lived there for 5 years. When my Dad went over to visit he went whale watching and said it was absolutely fantastic, the best experience he's ever had. He talked about it for ages afterwards! Not sure if its better at certain times of the year though.

Lucky you! Can I suggest that you try to visit Cambridge and Harvard?

Also, if you get time to leave the confines of Boston, I'd highly recommend hiring a car and driving to Cape Cod. Try to get up to the tip of the Cape, to Provincetown. The seashore around there is absolutely stunning. There are some lovely guest houses too.

Hecate, glad you gave this advice,as my sister is there at the moment. She is just a visitor(in Connecticut) and wants to go to a nice sea-side place.Cape Cod seems ideal, and Provincetown.Glad you recommended it,as I am E Mailing her every day.and can now actually give her advice on where to go.

The Aquarium is really nice, its got some crazy seals that fly towards the viewing screen to make you jump, they turn in midair and just miss the glass. There is the freedom trail walk, thats a series of redstones in the pavement that lead you to 16 historical sites. My top tip though is to visit the Cheers Bar! Its not the same on the inside but its well worth a visit.

Pattricia, be warned that Provincetown can be rather vibrant, so it's perhaps not the best place to go if she wants somewhere peaceful. It's also the gay capital of that area, so she might want to bear that in mind too :) . I love the place, but I can imagine it might not be to everyone's taste.

I stayed in a little town called Eastham on Cape Cod, which is lovely. It has its own lighthouse and the beach is gorgeous. The area of coast between Welfleet in the south and Provincetown in the north is beautiful, so anywhere along there is well worth visiting.

Hyannis is one of the most famous bits of Cape Cod, though I found it a little too commercial. There's also Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, which are islands off the southern bit of the coast. You can go for daytrips to both.

Another nice seaside town is Rockport, which is just north of Boston and fairly near Salem.

If you do go down 'The Cape' be sure to get the ferry over to Marthas Vineyard and drop in to the 'Black Dog' for lunch.

I love that place.

Also, get a 'Duck tour' round downtown Boston, The best way to see the sites, on a bus/boat!

I'll second the aquarium that was very good. Quincy market is great, apart from the smell :gag: You've also got to try some local clam chowder, and waffles with strawberries and maple syrup. The Tea Party ship if you're interested in that sort of thing. If you're taking children, the Children's Museum is a must. Hope you have a great time

I have to agree with the duck tour, really enjoyed that. We went on a day trip to Salem which was a lovely place - lots of lovely little shops (and witch related museums, as you might guess!)

As someone else has said, Harvard's a nice place to wander round, and I also went to the MIT musuem and Aquarium which were quite cool.

I also went on a whalewatch cruise, but didn't actually see any :(

It's a lovely city to just wander round, I really enjoyed the ten days I spent there and would love to go back some time (and hopefully actually manage to see some whales!!)

I think there is a bar you can visit where everyone knows your name.

Awww thanks for all the recommendations especially the Children Museum as im going with my sister (shes a live-in nanny) and her employer plus her 2 young sons. So we'll take them there when her employer goes away for the day and we'll babysitting them :)

I think we're free on some daytimes and the evenings we've got to ourselves so any suggestions for evenings would be great :)

Cape Cod and Provincetown sounds brilliant but not sure if we'll able to go though, will have to see when we get there. Will definately go the Aquarium and the Freedom trail walk sounds interesting too!

Keep the suggestions coming in! REally appreciate them!!

Its a shame its off season for ice hockey would have loved to go to a game! :(

Go and see the Red Sox at Fenway
Follow the freedom trail
Go down to the harbour area and have a meal and a beer in one of the oyster bars
A night out in Harvard
Geat stores in the downtown area

There are two. One that did the external shots of the bar, the owner of that got permission to make a replica of the TV series bar too. It’s not that similar though, other than having a model Indian by the door.

I'd change it before, just so that you're all prepared for when you get there. Have a fantastic time!

Another vote for the Duck Tour - an absolute must do, they are popular though so I'd get your ticket near the start of your trip because they are sometimes sold out on the day. The whale watching is good too - sorry you didn't get to see one Kanga - that's very unusual, in fact the boats that leave from by the aquarium will give you a free ticket for another time if you don't see a whale. You have to walk the Freedom Trail - it's compulsory when you come to Boston! I doubt you'll be able to get tickets for the Red Sox unless you get on Ebay and are prepared to pay because every game sells out, but you can do a tour of Fenway Park which isn't bad.

When you get out with your sister in the evening head to Newbury Street where my favourite bars are Sonsie and Match or the South End - 28 Degrees on Tremont Street is a cool place where beautiful people sip their martinis.

I hope you have a great time!

Hi Nick

They did give me another ticket, but unfortunately the next tour was scheduled for the day after I had to come home - typical!! Fingers crossed I'll get the chance to go back and maybe see one next time.

I forgot to say in my original post, we also went to see the Celtics, which was pretty cool, but it obviously depends on when you're going as to whether the season's on. I would have liked to have gone inside Fenway for a tour, but just had a wander round the outside on opening day instead. Looked like everyone was having a great time!
