I'm moving to Sheffield in September (will be postgrad student) and am going to look at some houses in Hunters Bar and Eccellsall area, and also in Sharrow area (just off Sharrowvale Road, near to London Road). I've heard loads about Hunters Bar area but nothing about Sharrow area yet, so was just wondering if any one has any wisdom to depart about what this area is like please?

Hi Angelene.

There was a thread recently about just that area.

Not sure how to forward one thread to another on here but I think you can look up things that I have previously posted or I can tell you that the last contributor was (18-06-2006, 01:18 PM #8 orangehelen)

Can anyone tell me how I could have given this information more efficiently?

Lennard

Great place - down to earth, friendly, really good local community events, such as the famous Sharrow Festival of Light (google it!) and the summer festival this weekend. Also has one of the best restaurant streets in Sheffield - including (arguably) the best chinese, japanese, italian, french, turkish, indian restaurants in Sheffield! There are also some fantastic shops and bars.

Only down things I would mention are that there is a mixed quality of housing so check out the area immediately around where you're thinking about moving to. You do sometimes see small groups of kids about and occasional people in the streets who may be a bit off their head, but I've found this fairly typical of most places/areas and if you're street wise you should be fine.

I also lived by Hunter's Bar for a couple of years. For absolutely gross generalisations (deliberately exaggerated or quoted from other sources so please don't have a go at me anyone!!!!):

HB = wealthy, safe, 'bourgeois' (to quote another SFer!!!!), studenty, professional, green, coffee on a Sunday morning, promenading down Eccy Road.

Sharrow = mixed income, slightly edgy (again, to quote another SFer!), multicultural, interesting, funky graffiti-ridden, community-driven, late-night lock-ins; the smells of a thousand cuisines.

I though Hunters' Bar was great, but I love Sharrow and couldn't imagine moving away in the near future.

Brilliant, thanks for all your advice, it's really useful as I don't know much about Sheffield at all, so I appreciate all views - good and bad!

i love sharrow, yes it has "ethnics" i hate that term like theyre somehow different!
really down to earth and pop down london rd on a saturday night and you'll see the energy of the people on the street, its magic.
anything bad written about sharrow probably comes from the toffs in the 'burbs who heard a story from the local tabloid.
ok there was a stabbing not too long ago but there are muppets in all areas regardless of house price. its all about the people. and sharrow is lovely. highly recomended. (i have V large 1 bed flat £350pcm)

i've gotta disagree with the others sorry, i've lived in sharrow for last two yrs, down club garden road to be precise and while i'll admit it is a nice area, during the day its a nice ethnic area, good little shops, close to town buses are really good etc, nice houses i feel its a very different area at night and you must be careful of that, its not a very nice place to walk round alone, in past two years within the area/my friends i've seen cars regularly torched down our road, they joy ride them and then just set fire, set fire to mates car one night for no apparant reason, two guys walking round to ours late at night had knife pulled on them, a young girl was snatched into a car down the road, friends house on same road has been burguled twice, a friend was attacked badly, had psycho neighbour watching us everytime we left the house and had to get the police on him!!

I'm not saying sharrow isn't a nice area so pls no one take offense and i appraciate that every area in all cities have there problems but sharrow is a area that i personally don't feel safe in and i no longer want to live, i'm moving out to safer areas and hopefuly some better look! Just letting you know all this to make you aware!!

just to add another to that list, the lovely old man who runs the shop across the road was burguled today and he was hit around the head and apparantely his injuries are pretty bad, really hope he's ok, he's a really really nice guy

Hmm am really torn now as the house i went to see was really really nice, but not sure i would feel safe going out around there at night from what people have said. It was on Hobart St which i think is not far from Club Garden Road so makes me think maybe would be best to look somewhere else. If i could just transplant that house to another area...
Anyway thanks for all your comments, has been really helpful!
