View Full Version : The Rex Cinema
Don't know if this has been discussed but who remembers the Rex at Intake?
I was only young but I remember it being particularly dark and dusty. It was also easy to get into for free as the toilet windows opened up at shoulder level and you could climb in AND the emergency exit opened with a minimum of effort from the outside - no wonder the place shut!! We got in WAY too young to see the Exorcist and I didn't sleep for weeks. I only properly watched it recently.
We used to go on Saturday mornings to see Childrens Film Foundation films where kids saved the world on their Choppers with flares and snorkel parkas on LOL
Also went to see a film with Mud, The Glitter Band and The Rubettes (I think) called.. what? anyone remember? It was on with a Slade film which I assume was In Flame (?). I didn't watch much of it though because we were too busy rolling toffee poppets down the aisles LOL happy Days
We saw the latest Bond movies there too at the time.
Its a Supermarket and car park/Chav meeting point now. When did it actually shut? I reckon it must have been in the early 80s because I was at college I'm sure.
Plain Talker 16-06-2004, 00:23 it closed in about 1982, to my recollection.
In 1981/2, was working as a nurse, in mental health, (with the main focus on mental handicap), and, at that time, i and some colleagues went to see "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" there.
I don't think the cinema was standing, much after 83, as the co-op built the supermarket with what seemed like indecent haste(!)
PT
Remember seeing grease at the rex(on screen, not the seats;) )
went with my mum,i can remember it was very cheap to get in compared with the cinemas in town, was a shame when it closed.
I never went inside but it was nice looking place from the outside and when it was pulled down so that a car park could be made for the super market next door I was sick.
i used to deliver morning papers to the old lady that owned it,she lived on hurlfield road.i saw jaws about 20 times and grease every night it was on..about 7 weeks i think.
joestrummer 24-08-2004, 15:55 got kicked out trying to get in to see Mcvicar.gutted as i was the oldest out of 5 lads, they got in....
I WANT MY CIGARETTES NURSE RACHET...
LoopyLou 24-08-2004, 16:17 i saw a lassie film there and cried at the ending.
for a few weeks afterwards when we went 'down the dip' road at the side of the rex, I would would remember lassie and burst into tears.
I think I also saw one of the star wars fims there - but it didn't have quite the same affect on me.

That film was called NEVER TOO YOUNG TO ROCK. Not surprisingly when you look at who was in it, it was a load of old rubbish
alchresearch 26-08-2004, 11:43 It was such a sad loss to see it go. Living in Woodhouse it was great to nip up there on the 32!
I remember seeing Condorman and Airplane there.
Does anyone else miss the feel and atmosphere of the old small cinemas? I think the new multiplex ones are cold and sterile, and probably no bigger than ones like The Rex because of all the screens they shoehorn in.

investigator 17-03-2005, 07:53 Fabulous thread... I spent loads of time there as a kid. Managed to wangle in to see Jaws even though I wasn't old enough... saw Pete's Dragon (how cool was that !!!).
I remember that the film didn't start until about an hour after it should cos there was always some crappy film about husky-dogs or sommat equally as boring.
I think memories of the Rex have been on before
Anyway---we lived on Audrey Road many moons ago and just after the war , aged about 5 or 6 , I went with my parents to see "Wizard of Oz".
Apparently there was a bit of criticism because the Wicked Witch in the film scared a lot of little kids.At least it toughened us up for Mrs. Thatcher.
squeakyclean 02-08-2005, 18:32 Went to see 'The love bug' there with my dad. and I think it's the only time I ever went. I was telling my kids about it the other week as we were parked in the Coop car park ajacent to where it once stood.
I lived at Intake probabley the same many moons ago as Fareast and the Rex cinema was my local Picture House.
Used to go to the pictures about twice a wk for the grand cost of 10d in the front and !/6d in the back.
There was usually 2 films on and the news and a cartoon ie Pete Smith who did home improvments or Tom and Jerry.
I graduated from weekdays to saturday nights.
So from going as a youngster to being taken there later on by
a string of boyfriends I spent a lot of my youth in the Rex Cinema.
hazel
used to go every friday regardless of what was showing.
even climbed in thru the toilet window to see Enter The Dragon when it was released as an "X".
my nan worked there as an usherette for the last 4 years of the buildings existence.
unfortunately this type of cinema has spoilt the modern type for me.
how cool was the "b" movie featurette then an ice cream interval with adverts before the main feature started.
SIXTYFIVE 09-08-2005, 20:40 I now feel very old. My Mum and Dad took us to see the musical, South Pacific All the way from Frechville, it's a long way when your 7
fruit&nut 09-08-2005, 20:51 used to go to kids club there on a saturday, mum and dad would drop me and my brother off and go to town and collect us on the way back,,,i feel old now,,lol,,
SIXTYFIVE 09-08-2005, 21:08 Oh boy...Kids club 1958/60. Lots of shouting and cheering. Cartoons, gun & sword fights (no one was killed) and sweets.
Then home for toast and dripping. I must come back and have a look around. Last time I was in Sheffield(Frechville) was 1977
Nigel Womersle 16-08-2006, 23:23 The Rex wasn't such a bad place. It was a lot cleaner than some Sheffield surburban cinemas. One thing which infuriated me at The Rex was the pale blue light set around the screen. They hardly ever knew when to dim it down. The Rex was owned by Miss Dorothy Ward. Her father had it built in the twenties. It was one of the larger surburban 'pictures'.
Hi
I saw quite a few films at the Rex but being kids we always misbehaved. I remember getting chucked out of "Nicolas and Alexander" cos we were throwin stuff and generally being pains.
used to love going to the rex. it was a rare treat and the last films i remember watching there were king kong 1976 and planet of the apes. we moved from lowburn rd in 77 to pitsmoor.

I also think she owned the pictures at Killamarsh but not 100% sure

I think you are right there. In fact I know you are, as at one time I was a projectionist, and we knew who was who in Sheffield. Miss Ward and her family owned both those cinemas. Miss Ward was the boss.

It was one of the larger surburban 'pictures'.I took my 4 Kids and a couple of their friends around 1973. The youngest was a baby.Iwas a bit surprised when the usherette shone her torch on us during the film. I wondered what was the problem. The owner had sent her to refund some of the cost of the price I had paid She said we had paid too much!I thought that was a lovely gesture and very honest. I think we bought ice cream with the cash. It is something I"ve never forgotten. Yes, the cinema did close a few years later.I too remember the car park. We left the area in 1977.
REX - the only place to cut your cinema going teeth !!! I too didn't sleep for weeks after seeing the X rated Exorcist at around 13 - I think. A pair of massive platforms from nat Elstons always did the trick.
Saw lots of great movies here for free - all the Bruce Lee films, love story etc.. etc.. we used to pay one person in - and they would then open the exit door near the toilets. the old dear in the ticket box used to try her best to catch us but aawwww... she just wasn't quick enough.
On reaching the age of approx 16 we then used to pop in to the Royal oak for a swift illegal half !!!!
