How many people on this forum sunbathe in the summer? is it safe? do you believe the advice we are given by so called"experts"about it causing cancer? We always thought as youngsters, that the Sun was good for you.

I have been sunburnt many times in my life and have never had any adverse effects, The action of sunlight on the skin promotes vitamin D which we need to keep us healthy.

Are all these warnings about cancer, just to panic the population in to buying expensive suncreams and increasing the manufacturers profits? call me a cynic if you like, but I do not accept all this propaganda.

Hmm Sunbathing.

It may be dangerous, and evidence seems to show that there are higher levels of harmful ultra violet radiation than ever before.

It might even be due to the depletion of the the ozone layer.

A tan used to say something about you: that you were a labourer who worked outside and were likely to have a low income and working class family.

Later, it used to say that you were an exclusive member of the Jet Set that could afford expensive (then) airfares to sunnier climes.

Now it doesn't indicate much, other than you have nothing better to do than sit in the sun cooking like a pork chop.

My tan goes from the neck up, the elbows down and the knees down. I keep everything else covered, partlyout of sympathy for others, but mostly to protect myself from the ravages of thermonuclear radiation.

It is more dangerous to sunbathe than it used to be.

But each to their own, and let Darwin sort them out.

Well i must admit i do sunbathe in summer when i have the time but since i havent got the time this summer ill be mainly using the safe method of fake tan. Sunbathing can promote skin cancer and im fully aware of that but you cant spend your life locked indoors really can you - and when I go on holiday I always like to come back with a tan to remind me of how sunny it was - its quite sad really, you go all that way and spend days just laid there on a beach but thats just the way it is. Ive been badly sunburnt in the past, even though i use a high factor sun cream, and when i went for a checkup i was told that if a person is sunburnt they are much more likely to get skin cancer so to look out for any changes in moles/new moles appearing. Having said all that I dont think people in britain need worry about being tanned too much - we're in the northern hemisphere miles from the equator, people dont expect us to be tanned.

No, I can't stand sunbathing no matter where it is. I don't like been hot, I have pale skin and I burn easy, I never go brown, just red and then back white. I am not one of these who goes on holiday to spend a week on the beach.

Sun exposure accelerates (indeed, almost entirely accounts for) cosmetic wrinkling.

There is also the very real increase in cancer risk. Just look at skin cancer rates in Australia. White people aren't made for sunbathing.

On the other hand, vitamin D is a really important nutrient. Dietary vitamin D is alright though, it doesn't all have to come from sun exposure.

how do i get vitamin D

From sun exposure, from supplements, or from certain foods. Milk, eggs, mackerel, salmon and tuna are all quite rich in vitamin D.

Probably worth supplementing though, studies have suggested that a very large proportion of Western adults are vitamin D deficient.

so how will i know if im vitamin D deficiant?

In severe deficiency, you see muscle and bone weakness and involuntary muscle spasms.

In milder deficiency, which is much more common, there is an increased risk of infection, cancer, high blood pressure, autoimmune diseases and all sorts of more minor stuff from bad teeth to poor memory.

The effects are so wide ranging they can basically be termed 'general health'. If you only take one vitamin supplement, it should in my opinion be high dose vitamin D. Especially if you're dark skinned, as you'll be getting even less from sunlight.

Maybe not at the moment, but it could catch up with you in the future and cause some real damage. I have a relative in Australia whom, as a kid, used to play out in the sun without any form of protection i.e. clothes or sun cream and now 40 years on, he's terminally ill with skin cancer.

hOW MANY INDIGINOUS AFRICANS WHO LET EVERYTHIONG HANG OUT SUFFER FROM SKIN CANCER ?.
sUN BATHING IS ok IN SMALL DOSES, TRY TAKING A COURSE OF BETA CAROTINE CAPSULES STARTING ABOUT 30 DAYS BEFORE YOU INTEND TO SUNBATH. THE BETA CAROTINE STIMULATES THE MELANINE IN THE SKIN TO BE MORE RECEPTIVE TO SUN LIGHT. I HAVE BEEN DOING THIS FOR MANY YEARS AND THE TAN LASTS FOR 12 MONTHS. IT IS AWAYS PREFERABLE TO USE ASUN CREAM, THE FAIRER YOU ARE THE HIGHER THE FACTOR, I USED TO USE OLIVE OIL AS A WAY OF GETTING A GOOD TAN, THE PAIN ONLY LASTS THREE DAYS.

The caps lock key is on the left side of the keyboard. Use it!

Sunbathing is fine as long as you use 1. plenty of suncream, 2. never let yourself get burnt. Sunbathing makes people happy, and is vital in making vitamin D.
