View Full Version : Any other IBS sufferers on here?
*Twinkle* 04-07-2006, 11:55 I'm really suffering today :(
I've eaten one slice of wholemeal toast and had a small bowl of salad today and I'm literally bursting out of my jeans :(
I've taken my tablets, but I dont think they are the kind that will deal with the bloating.... They're the ones to stop the spasms, but still I'm bloated and in agony from a constant dull ache...
Any hints or tips to help me at all?
Is there anyone else on here that has to put up with this nonesense?
Grrrrr
I get this but not as bad....I just have really annoying rumbles and stomachy types noises, don't tend to get the pain for some reason. It's damned annoying....sitting on the way home on the train and my stomach decides to make random rumble/wind type noises :(
I've tried diet changes and everything, seems to be no sense as to when it starts though it's thought to have a lot to do with stress.....which is weird as it happens when I'm not stressed then makes me stressed.
Hope you get it sorted....not that you can ever cure it I don't think :(

I must admit I have been quite stressed lately, but if anything I've been eating far less than normal as I've lost my apetite through worrying...
Before I was diagnosed with it, I went to hospital and they listened to my bowels and they were guzzling and churning so loudly that the Nurse brought a Doctor through to have a listen!
It seemed to quieten down whilst I was on holiday, despite it being a junk food and booze fuelled week... But now I'm back its worse than ever!
I love to swim and it makes me feel better but I'm so embarrassed to go swimming as my stomach is visibly bloated!
Plain Talker 04-07-2006, 12:05 I'm undergoing a gastroscopy and biopsy next week, ( :gag: ) to find out whether the problems I am having are IBS or Coeliac disease. I have had some blood tests done which point to it being Coeliac. :help:
Either way, there is definitely an element of wheat intolerance there, hopefully I should have this cleared up, once and for all once I've had this procedure done.
I am on tenterhooks.

I've started having Actimel - sometimes two a day, and they seem to help. Stress is the worst contributor, so exam time was always a bundle of laughs.
What have they given you for the spasms Caprice?
Oh, and I find certain foods make a nusiance of themselves too. I can't eat garlic, cucumber or bananas without 'paying for it' afterwards :(
Sorry to hear that :( It really is annoying. Personally I've decided it has no pattern when it happens. Diet doesn't come into it much at all.
Mine only happens when I'm at work, weekends it's fine, holidays it's fine, back to work Monday morning and off it goes! I wouldn't mind but I'm the least stressed person I know.
I say go swimming when it's less busy or take someone along with you for some additional confidence. It's just the getting in and out of the water I would guess as once you're in the pool no-one will see your stomach.
Definitely try and find stuff you find relaxing to do and do it as often as possible :)

I'm on Merbentyl 20mg...
I havent quite worked out what sets it off yet... But I know stressing over things and getting upset ends up with me being in agony :(
Hi caprice,
Try looking at the IBS network website: http://www.ibsnetwork.org.uk/portal/
Lots of great tips, information and support.

Maybe you should have a diet of junk food and alcohol?
lizzmobile 04-07-2006, 14:09 Hey Caps, god it's the pits, isn't it?
I used to get it quite badly until I started filtering my water. Have had very slight attacks since, only very few but in 9 years, so I'd say it's pretty much gone away.
See if you can obtain a detailed water analysis from Yorks Water, you'd be amaaaaaaazed at what's allowed in there in terms of chemicals. No wonder we're all ill
pattricia 04-07-2006, 22:32 IBS covers such a wide area of bowel problems, that what works for one person doesnt for another. Some people have diahorea, some constipation, and some both. Ive had all the tests done, and nothing serious was found.I do find cutting down on wheat helps, but its hard to cut out bread completely,as you cant have a sandwich. I take Lactulose Solution every night(tablespoon full) as I suffer with constipation, but dont take this if you have diahorrea.
English Glory 04-07-2006, 22:36 Do what i go and get Imodium on the NHS (or the equivalent loperamide - sp)
That's no good if IBS is giving you constipation rather than run alley, mind.
Also take calcium and vit d tablets rather than touching owt with lactose in.
Don_Kiddick 04-07-2006, 22:40 Mines been good since I cut out gluten.
I keep lapsing & having the odd beer tho
If I drink whiskey I end up with an arse like a blood orange (http://www.scottgallery.com/images/boyle/Blood%20Orange%20Mandala.jpg) :o

Yes, see what you mean, Imodium is O.K. for diahorrea.Im O.K. with lactose, but it affects everyone in a different way.You just accept it as you get older.
Chris_Sleeps 05-07-2006, 09:39 I'm suffering at the minute. Past 3 days i've felt crap and its getting me down. I'm going on holiday on Saturday so i hope it calms down by then.
It's a rotten complaint, which gives differerent people a whole range of different symptoms. Stress is usually the trigger, and worrying about it once you have it does not help. The advice my doctor gave me years ago was to take everything that seemed to help & carry on with life - doing the things I enjoy. Sound advice, and, touch wood, as I have got older - I suffer far less.
You could try the gluten-free diet for a while - it does help some people, plus there will be certain foods that are worse for causing bloating - so experiment to see if you can find the things you should try to avoid.
I found indian brandee is sometimes very effective in easing colic/wind pains - you can get it from the chemist.
Hope you feel better soon. x
*Twinkle* 21-07-2006, 13:02 Oh God, its really bad today!
My stomach is so bloated I think I'll have to invest in some of the maternity trousers :hihi:
Any quick fixes/de-bloaters?! Normally I'd just not eat anything else, but I'm going out tonight and alcohol on a practically empty stomach is going to be really bad... Grrr!
