Ah, but these are knitted on ordinary straight needles. I'm going to have a go at them as I've always had a strange attraction to mittens. These use chunkier yarn than the one specified in the pattern I already have, so they have a bit more of a rustic feel to them.  There's also a pattern on Knitty called 'Broadstreet'. It's for fingerless gloves which have a sort of flap which you can pull over the fingers to turn them into mittens. I want a pair of those for winter too .
