Nothing at all mate......

Wat do i need to do to get one?

First - pass the taxi driving test
Second - pass the knowledge (Sheffield streets) test
Third - Pass a medical
Fourth - Pass a criminal record check
If the licencing committee are happy with these passes then they grant you a badge (Licence to drive either a private hire vehicle or hackney carriage)
Once you have the badge then you need a suitable vehicle, as none of the private hire firms in Sheffield actually own the cars - the drivers do ... either that or they rent them from someone associated with the trade. If you rent it, the car will already be plated (as a private hire vehicle) otherwise you need to get it through the very stringent test. Once this is done then you will need to approach a company that will be willing to set you on (which most of them will) and get their radio system fitted.

Hey presto - you're now a private hire driver.

By the way, the above will probably take at least a couple of months and cost you at least £350 before you even look at a car.
Still tempted?

Go to taxi licensing in the townhall and they will give u all the info you need. But bear in mind the outlays for your venture.

radio rent £80
fuel £100 quid a week i spent
fleet insurance £50 quid a week. yours will be high as u r a student.
rent of car £80-90 quid a week(or buy a used plated taxi but u take the chance of it being battered)

So basically you will have to work long hours even before you break even. Plus you will turn into a bad tempered old git. Trust me I did Mercury for 2 years(now run my own airport firm Home James Exec Travel) and my patience was tested lol. Plus you get runners, smelly people who want to make u gip lol, was puked on once and even had a lady who wet herself on my passenger seat lol. If u still want the job your a determined and brave man lol

lol i feel the pain, but it comes with the territory i guess?

I am not by any means a brave man..... just very skint and need some money asap. Im looking to work for RCA once i get the licence, they want £80 a week for there vehicle only other things i need to pay are insurance and fuel. Do you think its worth it?

Also how long do u think it will take me to get the licence?

depends how quick you are in learning the knowledge. I learnt it literally from the pages instead of out and about.(a month if u r quick) lucky now RCA/Mercury give all new drivers free sat nav for a few weeks. I had to use the A-Z lol.

RCA is getting bigger everyday. Their main patch is the manor/crystal peaks end of town. Easier money as its straight down the parkway on a friday night and into town for 12 quid from Swallownest etc.

Personally if its a short term thing I'd go elsewhere but if u prepared to work long hours it can pay.

Reading with interest that you set your own airport travel firm, I have just been made redundant and was thinking of the same. Is there plenty of work out there and if I am not been to cheeky could you offer any advice.

You have to be able to bite your tongue a bit as well, cos as with all customer service related jobs, there's an element of evil customers who will abuse you, shout at you and generally not be very nice to you, especially on a Friday night when they've had a skinful... And of course you're not allowed to bite back, takes a strong person not to though.

'Reading with interest that you set your own airport travel firm, I have just been made redundant and was thinking of the same. Is there plenty of work out there and if I am not been to cheeky could you offer any advice.'

Varies from week to week. Some weeks am busy others less. I changed as I wanted a less stressful experience and the pounding my car took was unbelieveable. In two years it was knackered. I now know why Asian cab drivers drive old japanese cars coz they can take the relentless abuse of town driving. Anything went wrong with my car and it had to be booked into ford which took weeks.

There is alot of competition like any walks of life and I rely alot on recommendations. Advertising is expensive too (yellow pages etc) but luckily I have a few friends with businesses who advertise me (Crosspool barbers Shearers for example). But as they say Rome wasn't built in a day lol.

You also have to be careful what car u get. Licensing laws are tough so posh people carriers are generally a no no due to height and access restrictions. So all in all its a battleground out there and Darwin's Survival of the fittest. :gag:

Town cabbying might be a better option if u want a quicker route

Do you really want to be a taxi driver in Sheffield? The market is saturated, unlicensed drivers easily take fares anyway, why bother paying the fee.

SO i want my girlfriend to get into an unlicensed car on a friday night and the driver has had no criminal record checks or anything. Dodgy or what.Plus they try to rip you off bigtime and u have no comeback. Pay up or face a beating.
