View Full Version : Cattery needed - any suggestion?
anne_shirley 03-07-2006, 14:41 Hi, we're going away in September for our honeymoon so we're thinking to use a cattery for our monster.
Usually he is fed by our neighbours, but we feel like is too much to ask them and is also a long time for the cat to be home and alone, we're afraid he may decide to run away.
Do you have any suggestion for a really good cattery, I am really concerned of leaving him, I think I will go to check a few, but would be helpful to have some pointers. :help: :help: :help:
Thanks
Paul-T-Geist 03-07-2006, 16:05 we usually send our cats to Morningside cattery at ecclesfield it's a lovely place.
I'll send you their address and number.
We've not had to put Sadie in a cattery yet but if we do she will go to Westwood Cattery at High green, it is run by a lady called Kate and my mum has taken her cat and the one before it there for years.
anne_shirley 05-07-2006, 16:17 Thanks everyone for the suggestions, will try to ring them :)
We use Morningside Cattery too.
If i remember rightly there is a open day event fund raiser sort of thing coming up - or might have missed it. Might be an idea time to go and look.
Amanda
Note: Sticky - as it's a popular question at this time of year
anne_shirley 13-07-2006, 14:51 I'm now reconsidering the cattery option - in the past we had a cat sitter coming to our house and she was lovely and monster looked happy when we were back. What I was thinking is maybe to leave him home with the catflap closed, so he cannot go out but he has all the house to himself to play and sleep, and then having the same woman coming along to feed him and change his litter tray. I was thinking to not let him out in case he feels abandoned and decides to move somewhere else. Do you think 4 weeks is a long time and a cattery would be better? I'm really confused and not sure what would be better for him. Any suggestion? :help:
Locking the cat flap doesnt work with my cat - he knows it opens so he pushes it so hard it opens, but them cant get back in.
Didnt realise your holiday was for 4 weeks, thats a tricky one! I cant imagine my cat in a cattery for 4 weeks, I hate leaving him there for a week.
Can you not get someone to house sit for you?
ring waggy tails they do visits and are good honest people, they do purrfect solutions where they call 2 times aday and its less stressful for you pets:)
they are only based down the road in woodseats:)

Willow Tree Cattery
29 Station Rd., Spinkhill. Tel. 01246 433 324.
Highly recommended. No dogs. You'll have to book early, though.
Bear in mind a cat's sense of time is not like ours. It will be harder on you than the cat.
BobbyBunny 28-07-2006, 18:37 I think maybe a house sitter or someone dropping by to feed the cat and play with it for say half an hour morning and night would be a good option. I'd hate to have to leave an animal of mine in a cattery or a kennel for any amount of time. Lol but thats just my opinion I guess..
pet-walkiz 28-07-2006, 18:41 try us!

sillymoose 01-08-2006, 14:26 if you live near sheffield look for one in eccalsfield cant remember what its called. its not far from the morrisions up their. they have their own pedegree cats so you know their going to be looked after.
we did a month honeymoon last year (good luck for the big day btw!), and asked on of our friends who still lives with her parents to house/cat sit. Considered a month in the cattery, but deemed it too cruel for moggy. He loved having someone there all the time, and rather than being upset about us not being there, was just overfed but happy! Maybe you/someone will know of someone who might be able to do the same thing...
pet-walkiz 03-08-2006, 14:44 hi have you considered our home care service ,where we can come and see your cat /feed it/water it/ entertain it for any length of time that you require on a daily basis?

silverlady 08-08-2006, 14:13 hi there after trying and testing loads of catteries i have found j and j,s in chesterfield the best one they get daily grooming and a daily run out of there pen also chicken and tuna is included in price. one of the partners is a qualified vet so they can also microchip for a fraction of what the local vets cost. good luck
I use to take my cat to a place that is half way between Rotherham and Swallownest on Pleasley Road.
The cattery was so nice i could have spent a weekend there myself. Cnat remember what they call her but if you were interested i could find out for you
Julia at JJ' 21-08-2006, 14:52 Thanks for your great comments, it's lovely to hear that our hard work is appreciated.
Just a small point to clarify - Jo the other half of JJ's Boarding Cattery is a qualified Veterinary Nurse not an actual vet.
Thanks - Julia at JJ's :)
Edit - but we are both qualified to undertake microchipping and yes we are cheaper than nearly all the local veterinary surgeries.
Definately recomend morningside in ecclesfield. Our 2 go their whenever we go away and they come back fat and contented. He feeds them really well, his assistant takes time to play with the cats if that`s what they like and he even has music piped into the rooms. Ours may have to go in for 6 weeks as we are having extensive work done to our house and will have to move out. The council have said they will foot the bill. Good job as it could be £500.
I know they will be happy their so if they`re happy, i am.
muddycoffee 15-02-2007, 11:29 Can anyone give some examples of cattery costs, as our cat might need accommodation for 9 days in march and we are wondering what kind of costs are involved?
SaxonLeigh 15-02-2007, 12:32 my mum & sisters used to use morningside cattery at ecclesfield but they have stopped now because on two occations my mum has got the wrong cat back. the guys are lovely down there & all the cats seem very well cared for & happy. you dont acctually go in to the pens to put your cat in his carrier & because both cats were black with a white flash on the nose we didnt notice it was the wrong cat untill we got home.
my mum & sisters use westwood catterie now at high green & i use ones at doncaster. i could recomend a few really fantastic catteries in doncaster, one that has won awards, but i'm guessing that they would be too far for you to travel.
most catteries charge about £5 a day with food included.
Sarah1982 15-02-2007, 12:57 i used the meers cattery over new year and they were really good. They currently charge £7 per day and that includes food, Ziggy came back happy and they seemed like nice people, so id use them again
heavenlyarts 06-03-2007, 13:38 At the Meers you can settle the cat in yourself.
They will also text photo's to you on holiday if you want.
They have a web site unfortunately I cannot post it as a link but it's www dot meerscattery dot co dot uk
marriottmr 08-03-2007, 17:03 I believe Cameron's Cat Lodge in Deepcar is the only FAB approved cattery in Sheffield, and Sue and Dave take fantastic care of your cats, you can really tell that they love their job and ours love going there. I thoroughly recommend it
Have you tried Hickingwood Cattery in Clowne, they are very good, she used to be an RSPCA inspector so is a real animal lover, we use them and our cats always come home very happy AND well fed, thay do take dogs but the cats can't see or hear them
Julia at JJ' 23-03-2007, 00:21 Quite honestly if any cattery asks you to walk out without settling your cat in yourself you should probably turn around and walk away....
I'm not just saying this as a cattery manager but as a loving pet owner.
Where is your cat going?
What does your cat's room look like, is there bedding, warmth, light etc.
Is it clean?
Is your cat climbing the walls or looking around, checking out the space.
What is wrong with the cattery and what is being hidden by not letting you go in? Why can't you see where your cat is staying?
All of our clients and their owners first come into the office to book in. Then both are invited into the cattery where belongings, if any, are unpacked, and pets settled in. Once the owner is happy that all information is imparted and understood and that their pet is safely in only then do they leave.
The license conditions clearly state that cat should have a brief once over to make sure information on the booking form matches that to the animal. How do you know this is taking place if you are just sent on your way. Cattery owners very quickly learn who's who and can easily match a client to a pet and vice versa. It's no wonder a wrong pet was sent home the wrong owner if their seperated.
We charge possibly a higher than average rate here but then we offer a well above average service:
Daily groom/playing/fussing - no extra charge
Administration of medication - no extra charge
Choice of cat and human foods - no extra charge
High quality litter
High standard of cleanliness and care
Large indoor and outdoor runs for every cat
Veterinary nurse on site (one of the managers)
Night checks
Discounts available long stays (4 weeks + or multicat)
We have - scratch posts, toy box, bedding - everything your cat could want
Bed heater in every pen AND 5 radiators throughout cattery for ambient warmth.
So if you are looking to book your pets into a cattery or even a kennel bear some of the above points in mind. You wouldn't take your child to a nursery without seeing the inside and you certainly wouldn't drop them at the door and walk away - nor should you be expected to with your pets!!!

I agree with Julia, there should also be no strong smells, a distinct smell of disinfectant is usually used to mask an unpleasant smell! Each cat should have it's name on the door so that owners don't get the wrong cat back, Have a look at the FAB website they give you all the tips you should look for and are independant so are not biased to one cattery. Always go and look before you book.
Julia at JJ' 23-03-2007, 13:19 I agree with all the good comments about FAB, they are indeed a very good place to start. But remember not all catteries are FAB registered and there may be a good reason.
We're not with FAB but as we have an actual Vet that board his cats with us and as our licence office is so pleased with us then that's enough for us.
But if you want to check FAB it's www fabcats org :)
muddycoffee 28-03-2007, 13:20 Having just picked up our cat this morning from JJ's I have to say it is a great cattery. He seemed to have settled in well, and was in no hurry to come back home.
He is in great condition, and happy After 9 days with them and I would not hesitate to use them again.
In my view It is far safer and fairer to leave your cat with professionals like these where they are looked after in comfortable surroundings, than leave your cat to fend for themselves at home relying on a friend to come and feed them, or taking it to a friend or relatives house.
They have a custom well designed home for a few days and the people in charge are cat experts.
At JJ's obviously cat lovers!
They even taught our cat to send text messages to us, while we were away, which is astounding as I thought he was only capable of rubbing his head on things and looking confused!
If you went on honeymoon in August I would recommend myself as a cat-sitter. I love cats and I always spend my summer holidays in Sheffield. But unfortunately in September I have to be back at work here in Germany...
Oh sorry, I've just realized the original post is one year old... :-)
