What the hell are the council doing to Charter Row (the dual carriageway behind the Moor)?

This was once a half decent dual carriageway going through a bit of town with virtually no commercial aspect to it and suddenly they have destroyed it. Lots of roads once leading off it to Wellington Street and Devonshire Green have all been closed, and they have cut it from two lanes to one.

I had to go to the new apartments just off Devonshire Green and had an absolute nightmare journey down closed roads and one way streets. It will put much more congestion onto the roads near Carver, Rockingham and Division Street. Getting out was even worse.

Congratulations, council, of doing your level best to drive more cars (and people) out of the city centre.

Yes, I sometimes used this carriageway as a alternative route if Hanover Way was bumper to bumper (as it nearly always is). It's just created more congestion.

Used to use it as an alternative to driving down eyre street and then up st marys gate when coming back from town centre to ecclesall. its shorter to do that and was nearly always less busy, but now I avoid it like the plague. I do sometimes pass through it at night when theres barely any traffic and I really can't see what they are trying to achieve by narrowing this road. There are some major modern offices there, is it something to do with them? I don't understand it. :?

They'll look silly when they decide to look at congestion charges, there won't be any navigable roads left to charge us for using!

I can't believe the mess they are making on that road. With those kerbs sticking right into the road when you come off Eccy road round about, there could be some serious accidents!

Why don't you stand up and ask the council? Go along to your local councillor's surgery, write to the town hall or even speak to your MP?

IMO I think the money 'allocated' for roads is a myth and the majority of the council budget goes on education as dictated by central gov.

IMO I think the money 'allocated' for roads is a myth and the majority of the council budget goes on education as dictated by central gov.

I thought the majority of it went on wallpaper and handbasins in councillors' quarters...

Actually when the LibDems had their brief period in office, they resurfaced vastly more than the previous Labour bunch (e.g Cemetry road, Silverdale/Millhouses Road (or thereabouts) - still not enough though. And why waste our money on speed bumps? the neglected pot-holed roads were a far more effective "traffic calming" measure.

There will be a new mini-interchange for buses on Charter Row, ensuring easy access into the city centre by public transport. New, high quality multi-storey car parking is included as part of the proposals, located next to the new John Lewis store. This will provide approximately 2,000 spaces.

Oversized roads such as Furnival Gate and Charter Row will be reduced in width and traffic will be managed to provide an improved pedestrian environment

Makes sense to me.

I responded to a request from Jan Wilson to write to her about the Heart of the City developments. I find Geoff's message above quite understandable considering the e-mail 'conversation' I had with Wilson (which was a complete waste of time as she skirted round every question I had).

I am in favour of the modifications to Charter Row though. The dual carriageways round the city prevent the city centre from developing as they're a barrier to people trying to walk round. The road closures taking place are only temporary - as I understand it the new road will actually improve the ability to turn into the roads coming off Charter Row.

Well done Chris. There you go Geoff, people can and do ask the council questions rather than expecting someone else to do it for them.
