View Full Version : Sock book recommendation?
Lucy-Lastic 30-06-2006, 17:58 Hi
My employee development fund starts again in July so I have £50 to spend on knitting books again:D I was thinking I might try some sock books this time (to use up some of my ever increasing sock yarn stash) - so has anyone got any recommendations?

I don't actually own any books on knitting yet:hihi: but take a look at this link to a review (http://www.socknitters.com/bookpagesox.htm) site. It might help you make a decision.
I have heard that "Folk Socks: The history and Techniques of Handknitted footwear" is a good book.
I have Folk Socks (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0934026971/qid=1151692809/sr=1-3/ref=sr_1_2_3/026-3570052-5524426), and yes it is a good book. Nancy Bush is an excellent writer as well as knitter. Another of her books, Knitting Vintage Socks (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1931499659/qid=1151692809/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_2_1/026-3570052-5524426) is also supposed to be a good read.
Sensational Knitted Socks. I have loads of sock books, and this is by far the best for both patterns and techniques.

Is that this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1564775704/026-3570052-5524426?v=glance&n=266239) one?
I quite fancy ordering this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0970886950/026-3570052-5524426?v=glance&n=266239) one too. Surely I can't be any worse at knitting socks on two circular nedles than I am at using the Magic Loop method?...

They are two of the ones Im leaning towards atm.

I don't like the Cat Bordhi one that much. SKS includes instructions for all the patterns on 4 dpn's, 5 dpn's and 2 circs and an explanation of how to use the 2 circs.

Now thats definitely useful to know - thanks:) So SKS for definite, Im wondering about the Nancy Bush travelling one - is that the one you have Hecate? Im not fussed by patterning socks using lots of colours (fairisling/ intarsia) so Im not so sure about the Folk socks one - hmmm. I wonder if I can get work to pay for new tools and just go for SKS - maybe I could get some more bamboos and Addis.

No, the one I have is Folk Socks. It's a very interesting read, but after reading your comments I don't think it's exactly what you're after. I agree that the SKS sounds interesting though, and the different instructions would be very handy.
I've got knitting on the road and folk socks and Knitting Vintage socks (and that's just the tip of my sock book iceburg!) and i think Vintage is the one that is best if you're more interested in texture than colour. KOTR is lovely, but there are a fair few socks requiring colourwork.

Thanks for that - I can probably afford both vintage and knitting on the road aswell as SKS - decisions decisions:D

And this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0964639157/202-8428601-8226245?v=glance&n=266239) is a good book as well for patterns, although there's no real techniques section. They're virtually all knit cuff down and whilst some of the patterns are just plain bizarre there are enough interesting and attractive ones to make it worthwhile
The last one that AmelieB recommends is on my Amazon wish list.
Just as a side note, I think Vogue publish a couple of books of sock patterns; you know those series of little white books? I'll have a look on Amazon, I'm sure I've seen them there.
Here there are: Socks on the Go 1 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1573890081/026-3570052-5524426?v=glance&n=266239) and 2 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1931543143/026-3570052-5524426?v=glance&n=266239). From the look of the covers, they may be a bit colour-heavy though.
I have both the vogue sock books and wouldn't recommend them. Another one that's not worth it is Knit Socks! by Betsy Lee McCarthy.
Lucy-Lastic 28-07-2006, 09:36 Sensational knitted socks and socks soar on 2 circular needles both turned up and I can definitely see projects in both I would like to do. After saying that I am not interested in doing colourwork SKS has some socks called maze (http://knottygirls.com/jenla.blog/?p=57) that are fabulous and I REALLY want to do these:love: The good thing about SKS seems to be that there are instructions there for using 4 dpns, 5 dpns or 2 circulars aswell as giving you choices of size so its really versatile.
