View Full Version : RISK 'World Conquest Game'
dylan_61 10-06-2004, 13:55 Do any of you good people like a good, mildly competetive game of the classic world conquest game Risk?
Does any one have any tactics, strategies et al.
Where do you think the best starting point is, personally I like to build up in Africa and control the strategically important middle east.
Anyone fancy joining me and a couple of mates for a game. Live in Sheffield's south west.
p.s. The Red Army is already taken.
I'd be up for a game of Risk.
Also am fond of Axis and Allies (if moves are restricted to a sensible 5mins per player per turn or so).
Furthermore, I enjoy playing PC multiplayer strategy games like Civ III PTW or Europa Universalis II. If enthusiasts of these games can be found in the Sheffield area, I wouldn't mind having my house being taken for a weekend for a strategy-lanparty.
But first things first.. I'm up for Risk!

Could never go back to Risk now.....
7 players 6 hours of lies, deceit backstabbing and treachery.
No tedious dice rolling
Easy rules

It's been a while... like 10years or so ... but would play it again :)
I'll take Austria-Hungary! :P

CaptainSleep 14-06-2004, 15:43 I think the key to risk is to establish control over one of the lesser continents as soon as possible. I like to control australaisa as it guarantees extra armies and is quite easy to defend.
The key terrotories come in pairs like the north africa - brazil link and alaska to yatousk corrider.
Risk is a fantastic game, i've got a variant, (lord of the rings risk) not as good but it adds variety in the gameplay and tactics
Get a life i cannot believe u have started a thread about risk the game! Go out and meet some real people not plastic soldiers!
I'll be up for a game of risk.
Tactics change depending on number of players.
2 playes = person who goes first always wins (all armies on one space ... capture max number of territories ... don't bother about continents).
3+ players = engineer situations where the other players are at each others throats (wearing each other down) ... while you avoid conflict and build up your strength.
Many a night have been spent with my friends playing this. I managed to get a really good box set of this for 50p in a charity shop.
I'm terrible at it. I am far too trusting and listen to too much advice from my supposed best friend while playing!!!

Ahhh.....but these are games you play with other players, so it would be going out and meeting people.
:-)

Did you write the above insult on a wifi laptop in the great outdoors surrounded by real people?
I doubt it. Maybe you should think before you hit the Post Reply button...
Moving on...*ahem*...hehe I used to love Risk but stopped playing when (ashamed to say it) a game ended up in mass fisticuffs! I used to share a house with the guys I was in a band with so we lived a bit TOO much in each others pockets.
We used to have a few beers and *stuff* and chill with a game of Risk but it soon became the outlet for all our frustrations with each other. I shall never forget the bassist grabbing the board, slamming it shut (pieces flying everywhere) and whacking the drummer over the head shouting "I saw you nick my f**kin army from Kamchatka!"
Whilst they were tussling on the ground I stole a look at their mission cards anyway :P :D
Nu_Skillz 21-06-2004, 18:39 isnt there a player limit? 8 players max?

I have the game its fun, i personally like 2 take control of Africa as it allows for you to move in2 Europe and America aswell as being able to defend fairly easily, However i suppose it depends on what mission card you get to which continent or continents you place ur men in.
Can i take this oportunity to apoligise for my last thread i was very bored and i didnt mean 2 offend anybody, however im sure i would kick all ur asses at Risk! or maybe not lol
It's a cunning ploy, Dylan, to ask for our tactics first and then invite us to play. You'll have to learn mine the hard way...
Risk-Diplomacy... I am in for world domination!!!!
dylan_61 24-06-2004, 09:28 Now that I have read all of you somewhat lack luster tactics we can go about arranging a game.
i've just moved house, so it would be no good at my place for a couple of months.
I suggest that anyone who wants to play should meet up in a bar so we can plan a game.
Anyone who wants to play can either send me a personal message or reply to this thread.
P.S. Who was the numpty who suggested using mission cards. It's world domination all the way.
P.P.S. The red army has been taken
Hey Dylan 61
I would be interested in a friendly game of risk.
Also would be interested in starting a Dylan Fan meet-up for Sheffield, if there isnt one already. Can you direct me in the right direction?
Thanks

Game of risk, Fantastic idea. I used to play most sunday afternoons with my housemates at uni. (doesn't mean I'm any good though!) Oh and I'm always green.
tactics: balance of power and strength in depth.
Have you all played SLAY (little computer game, simple but VERY addictive)
Funky Dave 10-09-2004, 20:37 Not really played Risk, but I'm a big fan of Europa Universalis II. Would other people be up for playing that?

YES definately. Not played it before, but just had a look at some screen-shots of the PC game and it looks fantastic. I love stratagy games like that.
Count me it ...

I reckon I could sort you with a copy, or you might find it in a bargain bin at GAME or so. You need to spend a few hours with the tutorial and a week or so playing campaigns to get a good grounding. It's not for the faint-hearted and a single games takes many hours to be played :)
It's very rewarding though, I think!
Thanks Armin
So it's not a board game too?
Pity ... looks (from the screen-shots) it would make a great board game.
So you'd be playing an on-line networked game then ?
I think Risk would make an excellent computer game if it was ever made. You could either play on the internet or over a network

Urm... nope to the board game :) EU2 sessions can already take quite a few days, now imagine how long it would take to play it as board game.
Yes, optimally it would be played within a LAN. I never played it online against others. Just against comps and on a LAN against human opponents. Just haul your comp over to someone's place to play. I have two extra comps at my house which should be able to handle EU2, so could probably accomodate two guests.

Risk already has been made a computer game, several times over in fact. The latest PC game version was called "Risk II", it had a few optional variants you could play as well, and still should be in bargain areas in your local GAME store. Or sold for peanuts online.
