I was horrified when I saw this the other day in town. OK there was no traffic but what if there was and she had kids and a family and there was traffic and she got knocked down and the driver of the car got shock which turned into depression and then suicide and her kids had no father and had to go into care and move schools to a place they dont like. So, i (after waiting for the green man) ran after her and asked her what posessed her to do this and ran through all the scenarios of what could have happened and she told me to mind my own F'in business and said i was crazy. And I thought I must be, to really think its my place to oversee the lives of others, because its a crazy world we live in and we must accept this.
This is the word of the RIP.

hmmmm how can you go from someone crossing on a red man to someone comitting suicide? I'd cross on a red man if there were no traffic, i wouldnt even press the button.

I think she has a point and you are crazy.
It is perfectly ok to cross the road if it is clear. Wether the lights are red, green, blue, amber or even the northern lights.

I would have called you crazy too, in fact you are so crazy I think this post has got to be a wind up! If the road is clear and it is safe to do so why not cross? That you ran through all those scenarios in your head disturbs me deeply.

I'm always paranoid about crossing on a red man but have to do it all the time. The lights where I live take so long to change when there's no traffic on the road, I look like a right tit standing there while everyone walks past me to cross over.

There's no difference between crossing when the green man is on and crossing a road at a point where there's no pedestrian crossing (which is often unavoidable).

(I hasten to add I'm only paranoid about it when there's a blind corner where I can't see if traffic is coming around or not, a long straight road isn't an issue)

Remember the green cross code man? Look left, look right, look left again and if the road is clear then cross. He never said anything about a red man??

Rip is having a dig at other posters, but just to inject a serious note .......

I believe (and practise) that, when with young children, you should always wait for the green man. What we as individual adults do is another matter, but the training/safety of youngsters is important.

When with the sprogs, I do find myself irritated at having to explain why "that man/lady" is crossing when " we have to wait"!

When driving, I get similarly irritated at having to wait at a crossing with no pedestrians around, 'cos they have had the temerity to cross "on red" after pressing the button!

Bring back the "Tufty Club", I say!!!

From my point of veiw i see where you are all coming from. obviously if you are stood at a red light and the road is clear but their are kids with parents the last thing you want to do is give them the idea that it is safe to cross the road. I believe no matter what the senario may be it is always wise to wait for the green man to show...after all what are they put there for.

Crossing the road without a green man is a risk, i have to admit myself that i have crossed the road without a green man but it is undoubtedly silly of me to do so because anything could happen while im running across that road.

The woman had no need to go off at you like that...after all you were only concerned about her and other peoples safety.

Maybe we should get a couple of mounties across here instead of traffic lights...then we have no choice whether to wait or not :)

It's strange that everyone thinks this is a wind up. Having lived in Germany for a number of years it is the norm to wait for the green man to show even if there is no traffic. It is to lead by example and it is frowned upon if someone does cross before the green man shows when there are kids around.

Different country, different ideas. If you believe this thread, you’ll be telling us next that like the Germans you’ve no real sense of humour! Must be catching.

why does it always come down to stereotypes? I just thought I'd write from another point of view. Thanks for your blinkered input.

Ill tell you what I hate more !!!

When im driuving to work in the morning and you go through a busy area outside a school. Theres someone with several kids weaving in and out of the traffic to cross the road. Often waiting in the middle of the road for one half of the traffic to let them cross.

what im trying to say is they put their lives and their kids at risk and they dont set a good example of road safety.

ALL THIS AND THERES A PELICAN CROSSING NOT 30 SECONDS WALK AWAY

Who are these people ????

Ha ha!! Visit Hackney - down there it's acceptable practice to push a pram with a baby in it in to the middle of the road when the red mans on to get the traffic to stop, saw it at least ten times a day. And no I'm not joking.

Some idiot parent who will be totally stunned when one of her darlings gets knocked down the first time they cross the road on their own ! Teaching by example is always the best way.

On a similar note, I am always amazed at the women who stand on the edge of the kirb with their children in a pram dangling over the edge into the path of traffic.

I won't cross if the red man is on if there are children waiting. I do it if there is no-one else there and I havent pressed the button to change it to green in the first place cos I hate it when someone does that when I am driving.

it does wind me up to see parents crossing the road badly. like i saw a woman to day with a young child maybe 2 3y/o, stood in the middle of the road waiting for a gap in traffic. there was one of those island things for padestrians to cross the road in a safe spot just a yard to her left, all for saving time:loopy:

In the States, well at least I think in certain States, you can be fined for jay walking if you cross on a red. Even if the coast is clear.

Don't forget, to keep looking & listening whilst crossing the road.

Oh, and walk. Never run:D.

When with the sprogs, I do find myself irritated at having to explain why "that man/lady" is crossing when " we have to wait"!

I tell 'em it's because they have been to hospital, and have had thier brains removed (ie they are the stupids of the world).

Or that they were (obviously) a hedgehog in a previous existance:D.

'Always wait for the little green man!!'

I've been waiting for 'em for years:hihi:

Call me silly, but I ALWAYS wait for teh green man on crossings.

As you just don't know if you cross on the red, that some idiot's not going to come tear-arseing round a corner and blaze into everybody or whatever.

you're silly.

No, I'd just prefer not to get knocked down by some chavved up boy racer on heat who plows through a red light.

It's called common sense and teh desire to stay alive.

Do you see?

Cyclone
01-07-2006, 20:18
Ah yes I see. So the green man will protect you from the chaved up boy racer. What does it do, leap down from the sign and stop the car superman stylee?

Common sense makes it possible for you to cross the road when there is no traffic without the aid of a sign. Do you see?
