Years ago the local shops and business used to close on wednesday afternoon and the people that had the time off formed a league between themselves and when the football league was formed a team comprised of players from the wednesday league formed a team hence the name if they had played on friday they would have been called sheffield friday hope this helps !!!!!!!!

its the only day that they are allowed points, which is why they get none on saturdays

Sheffield Wednesday originally started out as a cricket team and used to meet in the Alma pub (where the crucible is now i fink) every Wednesday and in the winter of one year the decided to play football, and adopted the name of Sheffield Wednesday as it was half day closing of shops etc, thats why they were there.

Originally the Cricket team was called "The Wednesday Cricket team" as thats when they played (half day closing etc.) As there was no cricket during Winter they formed a football section who also carried the name "Wednesday" which became the Sheffield Wednesday Team in case there were other towns with a Wednesday football side.
As their popularity grew, lots of players wanted to play for them, the ones who didn't quite make the grade went to play for Hallam FC or for Sheffield FC, The ones who couldn't find a team desperate enough to take them on, (the non-entities of football) used to meet in a local hostelry to drown their sorrows. The landlord suggested that as they were united in their lack of skill they should form their own team and take the name United. This tradition continues today.

just a few tips for you next season, make sure you make plenty of sandwiches for the trip to plymouth, it is a long long journey.

I'm not entirely convinced by the signings upto now but there are still 2 months to the close of the transfer window so I'm happy to wait and see.
