View Full Version : Child in car - No Seatbelt
Lindseyw 30-06-2006, 13:19 I am SO annoyed. I was coming to work today & there was a car in front of me with a child stood up in between the passenger & driver seat. (people over 35 can probably remember doing this as a kid themselves)
The car was moving at a minimum of 40 miles an hour and this child (approx 3/4) was happily jumping around in the middle. He had no child seat, no seatbelt. Nothing !!
So, me being me, I had to say something, the woman pulled into a very prestigous car dealership,so I pulled in after her, and told her that I thought she should know her child has no seatbelt on. To the astonishment of me & various care salesman Mother of the year then proceeded to scream like a fish wife a mix of various 4 letter words !!!
To be exact - told me to **** off & mind my own business, and her son was fine & what the **** do I know when I'm only ******* driving behind her !?!!?
What possesss these people to do this ?????
How irresponsible can you be to let your 3/4 year old son stand in the middle of the seats ? Even a slight impact could have resulted in serious injury or even death !
EmilyJane 30-06-2006, 13:26 Most of the people who pick their children up from the primary school next to me have no car seats, it saddens me.
Children may not like them but I think they are essential.
Im glad you said something Lindsey. What would have happened if they'd have crashed and the child had gone through the windscreen through not having a seatbelt, then the lady? So did this woman put the seatbelt on the kid or not?

Nope she turned her tush and strutted into the showroom !
*Twinkle* 30-06-2006, 13:29 I'm sorry to hear you got all this abuse Lindsey... Sounds like you met a right nutter :loopy:
I dunno about anyone else, but when anyones a passenger in my car (adult or child), I don't go anywhere until seatbelts are on... If they don't like it, then get out and use the bus... But I make sure my passengers are wearing one before I go anywhere
Skatiechik 30-06-2006, 13:30 More money than sense it seems if the dealership was that prestigous.
Blade1983 30-06-2006, 13:31 that is one thing i am very strict on with my 4 year old daughter - she must sit properly in her car seat, and she must have the seat belt on PROPERLY
she complains it rubs her neck - but i tell her it's better that than go flying through the windscreen.
EmilyJane 30-06-2006, 13:32 At least you made the effort to tell her.
I think she was abusive because she knew she was doing a stupid thing and tried to cover her embarrassment up that way.
Silly woman
Some people don't deserve kids
Seatbelts are there for a reason, use the bloody things! Dozy cow!

I don't know any 'normal' person that wouldn't insist on it Blade ! It's mad not to !
Blade1983 30-06-2006, 13:37 I don't know any 'normal' person that wouldn't insist on it Blade ! It's mad not to !
agreed!!!
the last thing i want is to live through the rest of my live thinking: "If only i'd have made her sit in her car seat"

Well.... I did tell her pretty much exactly that just as she was swishing through the doors.

Same here Caprice, if anyone wants to get in my car then they have to wear a seatbelt. Seatbelts are there for a reason, not just as a decoration on the car!
Blade1983, if the seatbelt rubs your daughter have you tried one of them cushion thingys for it?
xxx
Blade1983 30-06-2006, 13:40 i have got one now actually - it's much better - she doesn't complain anymore!
purdyamos 30-06-2006, 13:40 The depressing thing is, if the mother reacted like that to you (in front of the child, I presume?), it's not just in matters of car safety that the child's going to suffer. The mother's probably unfit and unhinged in many other aspects of life too. :(
When I see a car with kids in not wearing seat belts it makes my blood boil - I can think of nothing more irresponsible. As previously stated - "some people do not deserve kids".
I wish I had the guts to stop somebody and have a go like you did.
Thank you
:)

I must admit - I was shaking i was so angry, and the fact that she clearly didn't care was unbelievable !
I agree she does not deserve children.
HAve you got her reg Lindsey? I'll complain to the police for you if you like :D
Lindseyw 30-06-2006, 14:24 HAve you got her reg Lindsey? I'll complain to the police for you if you like :D
Nope it was a hire car and I was too cross to remember it
Swan_Vesta 30-06-2006, 14:26 And in the event that the stupid ruddy woman had an accident and her child was injured or killed she'd be wringing her hands on Calender stating how cherished her little angel was and how the void in her heart will never be filled.
That's because your inability to care for your child ended in their horrific injury or death you dumb 'effing oxygen thief! Jesus, some people should be neutered!
cosywolf 30-06-2006, 14:29 Good going, Lindsey.
Like someone else said, she was probably so insanely defensive because she knew she was doing something stupid (actually, I would say homicidal - or, what's the word when you murder your own children?).
It drives me crazy when I see kids roaming free in cars, especially on the motorway. I can't help but think they can't love their kids much, or themselves, as the person in the front seat has a good chance of being squashed to death by the person in the back.
I regularly have cosycub in car seat on one side and the evil puppy safely haltered in on the other side - I love them both too much to endanger their lives by not strapping them in. (Did I say I love that dog? Hmmm...you won't hear that often, lol).
Swan_Vesta 30-06-2006, 14:30 I would say homicidal - or, what's the word when you murder your own children?)
Infanticide I Think.
they always think 'it won't happen to me' or 'I'm a safe driver'
That's not what the police think if you get caught by them
cosywolf 30-06-2006, 14:35 Infanticide I Think.
Thank you, hun, that'll do. My head's on holiday today - wish the rest of me was.;)
Godzilla 30-06-2006, 14:38 Once, on a nasty winter day, I was queueing in traffic on a main road. I let a car out in front of me at a junction, and was annoyed that the driver hadn't even cleared the snow off the back window. As I followed, the snow began to melt and I could see a toddler with a baby's bottle in its mouth stood up in the footwell of the front passenger seat. A couple of miles further down the road the car turned off, so I did not have the chance to say something, But even now I wish I had.
EmilyJane 30-06-2006, 14:41 I just can't understand this woman. There is no excuse. We all know the dangers of not wearing a seatbelt, or in the case of children using an appropriate restraint.
I would never be able to forgive myself if anything happened to my children or another child in these circumstances.
Do car hirers offer child seats at all?
Do they offer them free of charge?
As for the kid whinging about the seatbelt on her neck, if i were a kid I'd much sooner have a bit of chafing round the neck than a broken one from not wearing a seatbelt and an accident happening.
I'm sure any sane person would agree.

It seems they do for a price

Lol, kids don't think that way...if they did life would be a lot easier when you tried to get them to do something they're not keen on...tried reasoning with a 2 year old recently?
It's down to the parents - this is one of those things where you just have to lay down the law, full stop. Reasoning doesn't really come into it.

That's outrageous!!!!
Considering the fact that they are now law, how can they charge for car seats? That would be the same as charging for the seatbelts!!!

I know you can buy some stage car seats cheaper than that.
Lindseyw 30-06-2006, 15:11 The woman was so rude though - I couldn't believe it, not an ounce of shame from her. I have to agree with what someone else said, if her child were to be seriously injured or worse then she would be sooo sorry she didn't use a seatbelt, even if the hire company dont offer a carseat, he was big enough to put a normal seatbelt on if let say it was an emergency trip, although personally I cant say I have had too many emergency trips to flashy car dealers.
EmilyJane 30-06-2006, 15:15 I cant say I have had too many emergency trips to flashy car dealers.
Me neither,
I still say she was rude out of embarrasment, well done you. At least she may think about it next time.

Actually, a seatbelt that is chafing a childs neck can cause pretty serious injuries in the event of a crash.
The seatbelt shouldn't be touching the childs neck at all. What you need is one of those thingies, they sell tham at mothercare and argos I think, where you feed the seatbelt through it and it adjusts it away from the childs neck.
If the child is 3/4 years old though, i dont think they actually need a car seat, maybe a booster seat, there different things.
xxx
I agree that it's totally irresponsible and reckless behaviour.
But if I see this sort of thing, I might pass comment on the lack of intelligence of the driver, but I don't have a strong reaction to it as many people on here seem too...
I'm not saying it's not your business (although technically...) but why should it affect you strongly? And make you angry?
As for speaking to people like that. More often than not if they are that stupid then their only means of communication is to shout and scream. It's just not worth the bother. There was very little chance that she didn't know the child wasn't fastened in, so she must think it's acceptable. Challenging that will just make them do something stupid, whether that be shout and scream, or launch a house brick at you. Either way, you achieve nothing.
CAROLINE81 30-06-2006, 18:07 well done lindsey for having the courage to tell this woman, good on you.
i find it disgusting that some parents don't even give it a second thought to tell there children to buckle up.
i have a child and we don't move until his seat belt is safely fastened and mine after all they are life savers.i know i'd much rather have a sore neck rather than a broken one or even worse end up dead.
