View Full Version : Amraj Indian Restaurant - Crystal Peaks
LoopyLou 10-06-2004, 08:19 I hear the new place has now opened, on the roundabout opposite Damons.
Has anybody been yet? What's the food and the prices like?
I'm off there on Saturday, any menu recommendations?
Emilychee 10-06-2004, 08:35 Ive been to the old one and that was nice, good food, good service.
Me and my boyfriend ordered a take out on Sunday (dont know if it came from the new or old restaurant). I had Lamb Bhuna and it was lovely.
I haven't sampled it yet but some friends tried it last week and they were happy with it, they didn't mention the price so it must have been good cos hes tight as a ducks whatsit. Has Damons gone downhill or is it just me being picky ? the meals don't seem to be as good as the used to be.
Emilychee 10-06-2004, 10:41 Never been to Damon's. Heard good things about it though. Is it really pricey??
Emilychee 10-06-2004, 10:44 My boyfriend lives at Waterthorpe (lives across the road from the moss way tram stop) and it seems kinda dead. Are there any good pubs round there??

It's Pricey, over rated but popular, god knows why it reminds me of something from the 80's
Martin Daws in the Star gave the Amraj a so-so rating the other night. It sounds as though he liked it but said it was a bit pricey. He also said he got the impression the kitchens were a bit over faced with the amount of people they had to cook for. He said the most expensive dish (a fish one) was rubbish but the rest of his meal was nice. I'll still give it a whirl though. I like the doorman.. full turban, traditional gear and ceremonial sword.. should sort out the nuggets on a Friday night LOL
Damons isn't as good as it was. I think its a bit like MacDonalds for grown ups. One thing is, the kids are guaranteed to like it and its still free on your birthday. They blanch when me and the daughter go in because we share a birthday LOL
LoopyLou 14-06-2004, 08:25 The man with turban on the door was a nice touch, Very friendly and enternatining whilst we were queuing to get in. Yes Queuing and it was only 7.30pm. The place was very very busy, but we didn't have to wait too long to get seated and the service was really quick too. We all ordered different starters and mains to try as much as possible. Most people happy with the food they received. I had Saak Tika, which was lovely. Hubby had Chicken jalfrezi and felt it was a bit too mild, but still tasty.
The atmosphere is nice, the decor is light and airy.
The bill (for 4) came to £90.00 which wasn't too bad for three courses and alcohol.
Will definitely go again, and would recommend it to others who would like a 'nice' curry in a 'nice' unrowdy atmoshpere.
LoopyLou.
P.s. re other parts of this thread, Damons is horrid - all the food is greasy and getting a free meal on my birthday would still not tempt me to go back!
I'd recommend the 'buffet night' on Monday's.
All you can eat for £10 or £11.
Cater for everyone. Children also made very welcome.
Still the excellent service as was before (c-peaks).
I also love Damon's. People have mixed feelings about this place but personally I think it's great.
I just don't like cooking at home!!
According to the link below it cost a fortune to build.
What is it like inside. I must admit I am curious and may me tempted to sample the food.

Emma_5207 22-04-2009, 18:01 Hello! Looks like this thread is a few years old. Im thinking of taking my pa for his birthday at the end of May and I heard they do a buffet night on Monday. I've heard mixed reactions so has anybody been? How much is it for the buffet?
We went a few years ago just after it had opened and was not impressed (my husband is from Pakistan so knows what a curry should taste like) - and the fact that they had rows of cream of chicken soup in the kitchen didn't give us much confidence. Haven't tried it since.
Went to amraj last Friday, with high expectations due to the gentleman on the door the size and how busy the restuarant was, and the expensive menu. Very disappointed, popadoms were ok that's about it, service was bad and slow, damp and dirty stains on the upholstered dining chairs, main courses were a king prawn khari which was bland with over cooked prawns with a basic Indian gravy which they use for every type of curry, coriander nan under cooked so doughy in the middle. Also tandoori mixed grill bland again under marinated and to top it off it was finished off in the deep fryed to speed up service. So for the price its not on. Won't go back. Gonna stick to akabars which is not perfect but better food and prIces and all round evening.
Amraj , can not fault it go regulary and food is spot on.
loobylou2008 08-07-2010, 17:45 I always worry that when places like this have buffets on a monday , its stock not sold from the weekends

you cant blame the curry house if you cant please your girlfriend you need to look closer to home my friend
scottkidman 13-07-2010, 11:54 yes food very nice ,great service
Absolutely shocking, I've been in cleaner transport cafes! Tried to bill me service charge on the buffet! They were reheating dishes in the microwave when they had been out on the buffet for a while and gone cold, one waiter tried to move a table to accommodate a large party and it was stuck to the floor with brown crud, took three of them to break it free off the floor, obviously the mop goes around the edge of the base! What sort of restaurant has TV's on the wall, its like sat in a canteen.
In contrast the old one when it was in the Peaks was good, overpriced but good, although I could never understand how they could put up the bar prices half way through the evening as the restaurant got busier? I believe it has changed hands since the days of Vijays ownership though.
Over priced averageness!!
Just been here in a group of 10 and have never had such rude and slow service. Had to ask several times to get drinks and when stood at bar was ignored and told "i am just doing table orders" even though he had served several other people stood at the bar. We booked for 8pm and eventually got our main courses at 10.10pm.
Will never visit again and will never recommend to anyone. An evening of old friends getting together was ruined by such a poor experience.:mad::mad:
