View Full Version : The 80's - love it or hate it ?
LoopyLou 10-06-2004, 08:12 The decade that taste forgot or the best years of your life??
Ra-Ra skirts, cerise batwing jumpers, big ear-rings and even bigger hair. the more hairspray the better. You couldn't move in the ladies at josephines for cans and cans and cans of the stuff.
And what about the music ?
neeeeeeeeeek 10-06-2004, 08:57 Glad it's gone!
Don't think I will be trying to bring Fluorescent socks back into fashion any time soon..
ZEDEX48K 10-06-2004, 09:28 Although I was only young, I loved it. New Romantic music, all the electronic gadgets getting brought out first in America then in the UK months later.
Videos
Microwaves
LCD watches - with loads of buttons on them and even games!
Rubik Cube
Walkmans
CD Players
Teletext
BMX
Satellite TV
Connect 4!
To name just a few...Its was the decade where every year there was a new great invention
Loved it
Oh and there was the A-Team, Knightrider and Mike Jackson Thriller video, when the whole street was talking about it. E.T and Back to the Future movies. Live Aid, Frankie says relax t-shirts, I could go on and on and on....... :)
Airwolf
Duran Duran
Spandau Ballet
My little brother
Transformer toys...
Puffball skirts,
Jellybean shoes and bags
Pixie boots and
lots and lots of Insette "This hairdo will never flop" hairspray!
Not such a hot fashion decade but the music was fab!
Being an older person I thought the youth had gone mad..I mean "Leg warmers" what was that all about, the lasses who wore them looked as if their Draws had come down when they stood with feet together. and my Daughter brought home a right sad looking object who wore make up and he stared at me through his hair combed over his face ( I was informed that he was a flocking seagull fan) so I told him to take his flocking seagulls and flock off.
I'm reliving the 80s at the moment as I recently bought Adam and the Ants greatest hits.
I've now got my 2 year old and my 4 year old bopping to Ant Rap.
Started Art school (Granville) agd 16 in 1980.. fabulous free time. Although, as now, I was a t-shirt and jeans dyed in the wool rocker, everyone else had the big hair, long overcoats, cavalry shirts, Bowie trou, long spikey winkle pickers.. classic.
New Romantics, The 'Sheffield' sound, the new wave of British heavy metal.. Pernod, Aramis, Barry Nobles Roxy (Is that alright for yuz?).. happy days
Classic Rock 10-06-2004, 15:49 The era that brought us Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Whitesnake, Poison, Motley Crue and anything else that shouted GLAM!
Iron Maiden rocked! Metallica growled! Donnington festivals were THE place to be! 'Bring your Daughter to the Slaughter' hit Number one and long hair on blokes was the fashion. Cowboy boots meant so much more than line dancing (pah!). Hippy scarves around necks.
Dave lee Roth was the best dancer, Sebastian Bach had hair to die for, Alice Cooper was Poison and Kiss put the S in Sex.
I'd love to be back there......but knowing what I know now.
that maiden track was number one in the 90s :o
loved it, does any one remember that cool shoe shop called rabeena or something with all the pointy shoes- and x clothes at the top of fargate?
we were talkin about the strange times at the limit nightclub the the other night , what happened to that?
still stuck there i am afraid (in my head) :)
I loved my rabeena pointy boots with all the buckles
me too, i had the most amazing black suede pointy pointy high heels, cant imagine how i used to go out in them now!
wounder what happened to that shop?
Love it, the 90's were a complete bore. The 80's may not have been big on taste (in some peoples minds) but the 80's were daring. It definately gave us something to talk about and TV show producers love the 80's, they can do so many shows on it about how bad it was and the music that came from it. I think VH1 are going 80's crazy at the moment:loopy:
I wonder if this would get more of a response in General chit chat? Mods could you move it please?
snowboarder 15-06-2004, 07:19 [ 'Bring your Daughter to the Slaughter' hit Number one and long hair on blokes was the fashion. [/B]
actually MAiden hit number one in 1990 with that one, prob the last great british 80's style rock gem reflecting that great decade,
I cant think of anything else that has not been mentioned.
We might be heading back towards men having longer hair as I no longer get stared at quite so much in trendy bars, a few years back it was quite hysterical to walk into some joint on West Street and have everyone pointing at you for being male and having a mane. Fashion of 2004 seems to have men growing their hair, well slightly at least....the day of the "bonehead" look of the late 90's/early 21st C is over.
A good thing made in the Eighties...me!! :D
i think personally the 80 s were crap. barring the odd band what legacy did it leave musically at least. did anyone see that cheesy tribute 2 the 80s sat night, christ dirty den and is wife just about sums up the 80s totally how rank was that program.
yep, it was a bit dire.
It could have been a really good program with the right presenters and content.
Midge was quite good tho, to say it's 20 years on.:)

discovery 14-09-2006, 06:23 Absolutely loved the 80's.
Shalamar, Earth Wind and Fire, Rebina shoes, Josephines on a Monday night, Steelys .....
Happiest days of my life.
I look back now and wasnt so keen on the fashion, but the music of the 80's was brilliant. Loved all the cheesy stuff, me and the girls love to go to reflex just for the music and to pretend we are teenagers again!! lol
I'd love to be back there......but knowing what I know now.
god...me too!!!
i loved the 80's, but was a niave teenager who lacked confidence in everything i did.
i was a duranny .... but dipped my toes in the rock scene too. wish i knew then what i know now:hihi:
just realised this is a really old thread!
lol :D

Sweet jesus I hated this stuff even then, long hair on blokes was NOT the fashion and Kiss sexy :gag:. Dave Lee Roth, Jon Bon Jovi, Def Leppard and Kiss ahhh man making people cringe is the only things these soft rock middle of the road, American shlock rock inspired (I use the word lightly) bands ever did. When I look back on the eighties there was so much good music around and the this sort of embarrassing lame stuff just devalues all the good stuff that was around.
Poodle metal (as we called it then) was a joke and it was dying the death even in the eighties, grown men with tight leggings or dressed as school boys, ridiculous perms, stupid cliche ridden imagery and tired predictable music was the worst element of the eighties (even worse than all the novelty stuff)
I know I am going to get some stick for this post but seriously seeing these poodle haired berks prancing around the stage trying to be hard used to make me laugh and their predictable music just made me despair, ooooh look here comes a HARD guitar solo two thirds of the way through the song.
Do not get me wrong there has and still is some damned good metal out there and a few of the above had some merit, Metallica stand out among the list above (Iron Maiden pfft) but Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, Dave Lee Roth brrrr just makes me shudder to think about how terminally embarrassing they were. The 70's glam scene at least had humour.
Ousetunes 09-09-2008, 10:29 rikimaru - calm down! Whilst I understand where you're coming from, you must remember that the charts, toward the end of the eighties, were chockfull of off-the-shelf Stock, Aitken and Waterman records. Even the likes of Cliff Richard and Donna Summer were recording songs written and 'produced' by SAW! At least the Hair Rock brigade you mention above were talented musicians and decent singers (as opposed to the Reynold Girls and Sonia, say).
There was also a decent Goth scene in the 80s and one great memory of mine is being in the Roxy nightclub on Bootham in York having my ears torn to shreds by Sisters Of Mercy's This Corrosion (and enjoying watching a fight which erupted on the top floor of what was a three floored club - long closed, sadly).
For the record, my CD collection consisted of the Smiths, Morrissey, Bangles, (recently available-) Beatles, Terence Trent D'Arby, Bee Gees, T'Pau, Talk Talk, U2, Climie Fisher, George Harrison, John Lennon, Wings etc, etc.

I have to say even though I am a through and through rocker I have to agree with you on a lot of this. I hated most of the 80's Glam rock AOR with a passion and still do much to OH's despair as for some reason he still seems to like a lot of it!
I loved the Glam of the 70's as it was fun and a laugh I still love most of the 70's rock bands (Zeppelin, Purple etc).
I like a lot of 90's rock and present day but just can not stand AOR it makes me cringe and always will. By the way Whitesnake are exempt from the above as they have done some brilliant stuff and were formed in the 70's.

I am certainly not against rock, only the embarrassingly cringe worthy stuff like Europe's "final countdown". As for SAW they are just as bad only in a different way.
Do not get me wrong everyone is entitled to their own taste in music and I have no doubt my own taste in music would draw just as much criticism, for the record my tastes in the 80's were:
Joy Division
Heaven 17 (early stuff before the early split and later stuff)
The The (awesome)
Adam and the Ants (more the earlier "young Parisians stuff but still liked the Ant Music, Kings of the wild frontier stuff)
OMD (again Enola gay time earlier stuff)
kraftwerk
Smiths
Slayer
B-Movie
Art of Noise
Metallica
Simple Minds
Early U2 (we are talking very early before Bono turned into the worlds conscience)
Talking Heads
Grandmaster Flash
N,W,A
Roxxane Shante
Imported Electro
Pixies
Megadeath
Run DMC
Depeche Mode (Vince Clark era)
And many others like the Kane gangs first album, the Christians and Terrance Trent Darby who I saw at the city hall when he supported Simply Red, Terrance had an awesome voice but Mick Hucknall blew him out of the water (even though TTD's songs were better) by the way it was the girl friend who wanted to see Simply Red but I was quite frankly amazed at how good Mr Hucknall was.
Please feel free to mock my taste :loopy: :gag: at your leisure, tis Ok I am thick skinned
Ousetunes: why calm down, I was not being Mr angry here it was just a slight good natured dig :suspect: at bad eighties music and fashion. One other thing came to mind, the videos for the poodle rockers songs used to make me laugh. All those gorgeous women getting turned on by lycra leggings and perms heh great stuff. AOR should be banned period, If I have one overriding annoying memory its having to listen to drunk girls singing "were half way there, woo ohhh living on a prayer" gahhhh, while sane normal people were trying to have a good time and get quietly drunk
M_Woodward 10-09-2008, 19:57 For all of you that loved the 80's, The Old Crown on Penistone Road is having an 80's night on Saturday, 25th October. (Fancy dress optional) I can't wait to see all the the ra-ra's and batwing tops not forgetting the make up. I may even bump into George Michael  Even better, the bar is open until 1am. :help:
The early eighties I remember more..
New Wave Music: Human League, Heaven 17, ABC, Cabaret Voltaire, Kraftwerk, OMD, Gary Numan (Warriors live at the City Hall 83) Thomas Dolby live Octagon 83, Ultravox, Midge Ure, Depeche Mode (Vince Clarke) Siouxsie, the Cure, Adam and the Ants (Early Ants Car Trouble), Visage (Fade to Grey), Soft Cell, The Thompson Twins, Duran Duran, Spandau, Kim Wilde, David Bowie, Sparks 70's to 80's, Bauhaus, Jam, Police, Undertones, Specials, Selector, Madness, The Beat, Fun Boy Three, Associates the list goes on.
The Hair Styles were very weird, Studded Belts, Chelsea Boots.
The Limit Club West Street.

white blouses with a frill at the front, black eyeliner, wedge haircuts, rebina sling backs, tighter than tight jeans that you had to lay down and thread the hook of a metal coat hanger through the zip eye and PULL:hihi:oh and WHAM!;)
Babooshka 13-01-2010, 19:57 Knicker Bockers!!!!!!!!! Those trou that had elastic at the knee, (think they were also called Pedal Pushers or something) (mine were black velvet)....that I used to wear with long white socks. GARGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Looked great with my frilly white blouse and turquoise and pink eyeshadow worn simultaneously.
