I like these (http://www.keyboardbiologist.net/knitblog/archives/cat_dragon_socks.html) and they look a zillion times easier than the Elfines:D

I do like those. I'm quite into the reptilian look, after those green speckled socks I made from the Art Yarns merino the other week :D .

There's another sock pattern around on one of the blogs that's go something to do with dragons too. Let me see if I can track it down...

EDIT: There you go: Wyvern Socks (http://marniemaclean.com/patterns/Wyvern/index.html). It was on Marnie MacLean's blog.

They are very similar arent they except they have a ribbed back. Ive bought the pattern btw and am searching for yarn now although I may wait for Socks that Rock:D Talking of yarn I was having a look at CTH on Woolly Workshop the other day and really like te look of Serengheti (sp?) - just not sure of a good sock to make with it:?

No! Don't show me more yarn! I'm alrady having to go to Ikea tomorrow to buy more storage boxes to keep it all in.

EDIT: Too late. I'm in love. Serengeti is gorgeous, but I really must have the Green Mountain Madness...

They`d look good in a fiery red for winter.

Oooh the Serengheti is very similar colours to Autumn Earth Curious Yarns - which I had also bookmarked. Has anyone knit using Curious Yarns? Really fancy trying Cherry Tree Hill though:o

They would indeed. I'd quite like something in a dark ruby colour, with a bit of subtle variegation. An emerald green with darker variegation would look good too.

I haven't used Curious Yarns, but I've been tempted many, many times to order some sock yarn from there.

I really highly recommend the Cherry Tree Hill though. As you probably know, I've used loads, and I've always been exceptionally pleased with it. You'll really like the subtle sheen you get with it. It's wonderfully soft too.

Why not order both?... :D .

Jabberwocky, I love your enthusiasm, but please don't start with socks. I don't want you running screaming for the Knitting Group exit before you've even begun.

Oh, and it's 'cast-on', not 'attach'...

Get yourself to John Lewis. Buy a pair of 5 mm bamboo needles. Have a look at the yarn section (preferably start with Rowan, because it's good stuff and John Lewis usually has plenty in stock). Have a look on the yarn bands. There'll be a little picture of a pair of needles with a size next to them. That will tell you which yarn will be suitable for 5 mm needles. If in doubt, ask the nice ladies behind the counter.

Don't go for anything fancy, just nice plain wool.

Ok, thanks for the advice, its appreciated. I could imagine socks to be hellish because of the heel. I may try a scarf at first.
If- WHEN I get into difficulties I`ll dash here and squeak in panic if thats ok?

You may squeak all you wish. Let me know what you decide to do, and I'll direct you to the appropriate help; or we'll help you on here, of course.

EDIT: If you want to do a scarf, I could come up with a pattern for you.

Oooh exciting:D Either try John Lewis or theres a new shop in Hunters Bar called the Wool Baa which is supposed to be fabulous and the lady there will help you with finding a suitable first project the wool and all the gubbins you need:D Id probably go with what Hecate suggests and do something in an aran weight wool with 5mm needles (or bigger if you fancy it growing quicker) - I was jesting about socks being your first project:blush:

I`d love to try the shops that you mentioned, but as I`m living in Leicestershire...
Theres a little wool shop in a nearby town that I haunt, and I`m going to bug them at the weekend.

I'd forgotten about that. It's a bugger not having a John Lewis in Leicester, though one is due to open in the Shires shopping centre, I've heard. In the mean time, you could try the John Lewis in Nottingham, if the local shop hasn't got what you want.

Its odd, but I mentioned it to various female neighbours and friends and they`re encouraging me, even offering to try to teach me and accompany me to the wool shop to choose the items that were suggested here the other day, and I`m actually looking forward to starting in spite of the fact that theres gong to be LOTS of tears because I`m impatient and a slow learner.
Need I mention at this point what my male friends think of me?

Are you anywhere near Mountsorrel, Jabberwocky? If so, I highly recommend visiting Blackberry Yarns on Loughborough Raod. The woman who owns the shop is lovely and very helpful.

There's also Fenwicks in Leicester city centre, just opposite the central library. They've recently expanded their range of yarn too.

I`m not sure where I am in relation to Mountsorrel but I ...THINK its not far from me (I`m just outside Coalville) but if I dont see anything on Saturday or on Monday when I`m in Leicester, I`ll definately get someone to point me in the right direction.
Thanks.

If you can get a friend to teach you, then definitely take up their offer. There's nothing better than a one-to-one tutorial; it makes the process so much easier.

Ignore your male friends. Have a look at the recommended links (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=98114) at the 'blokes who blog'; there's plenty of inspiration there (and no, not all of them are gay :) ).

I've been trying for ages to get some of the blokes on here knitting. I thought I might have had some luck with Halibut and Draggletail, but neither of them got beyond the occasional post on here. You're my first success!

The only person who is remotely capable of teaching me is a 70 year old with the patience of a Pitbull, so I`m staying clear.
As for my straight friends who are now havng a whale of a time at my expense--Put it this way, I have the kind of personality "Disorder" that thrives on that, and it`ll only make me want to do it even more, plus I`ll get the added bonus of irritating the hell out of them.
My gay friends... I havent mentioned it to any of them yet, but when I do, I can imagine most of them to tell me that it confirms their theory that I`m "One of them".
Ohhhh I`m going to be in SO much trouble!

As for me being your first success, dont count those chickens yet. I lose patience very quickly and for a few weeks after I start I`m going to be irritating the hell out of people by asking seemingly insane questions and squeaking for help.
Then after that, being male, I`ll turn into an instant Know-it-all and I`ll be irritating people (mainly you all ) by suggesting better ways of doing things.
Dont worry though, if I get through the first couple of months without someone killing me, I`ll settle down and actually start to enjoy it.

I know it! I actually know where that is! I used to pass it on the way to Loughborough when I drove from Leicester in my job. Ok, so I passed it at 2.30am, but I know where it is.
I`m really going to have to start learning more about this area.
Thanks for the map, I`m going to try to print it off and get Carol, my neighbour to drive me there next week.

The only transparent ones I've seen are those made from glass, and I've only seen them for sale in American online shops.

They are absolutely gorgeous, but I can't imagine they'd be nice to knit with; too inflexible and heavy.

Has anyone knit using Curious Yarns?

Yes, the yarn itself is nice enough (seems very similar to opal in composition, wpi, etc.), but there is a big issue with ordering from them. The colours on their website are NOT accurate. I recently ordered 3 skeins from them, and only one was vaguely like the picture. I happened to like how the other 2 were so I kept them, but a friend ordered Forest Walker (the one I got that was true to the website picture) but hers was a dreadful shade of snot and beige, rather than deep greens and browns. I'd still suggest getting yarn from them as the service is good, but be prepared to return the skein if the colour isn't right.

Excellent! Let us know what you have. Your first hurdle will be the cast-on. There are several methods, but I think you should start with the basic cable cast-on, as it's very similar to the basic knit stitch.

I'll direct you to an appropriate web site, though I think I'll start a new thread so as not to continue hijacking Lisa's one about the Dragon socks.
