Is there a reason why bigger music acts go to manchester and never go sheffield?!?!?!

because big bands tend to just play london and manchester if they are doing a world tour and only bands doing uk tours play sheffield. Manchester arena is also the best arena there is england (and i would say sheffield is 2nd best) and wembley is probably the worse!

lol yeah, I agree with you about wembley

Sorry bout this, just a rant wishing that that more decent bands would play at sheffield along with manchester and london.
Don't fancy going across to manchester to see someone and then get home at about 2/3 AM after a gig.

i went to see morrissey there last month. Its the same with smaller venues most bands would rather play manchester acadamy then the leadmill

Well Ian,it depends what you call great bands?

MuteWitness

well not "great bands" but bigger artists like Blink 182, madonna, britney etc. tend to go to MEN and miss sheffield

yeah the tour is always London, Manchester, Nottingham, Birmingham, London again.

I think the reasons are, they're arenas are bigger (sheffield has seating for something like 6000-7000 as far as i know... it looks sold out last time i went and apparently there was 6800 people there). Manchester has two tiers of seating, nottingham has space for at least 8000 (8500 at the Panthers/Steelers cup final i believe)

Also, have you noticed sheffield is virtually never on any weather maps? i don't think anyone outside the UK has even heard of us. The student games and such like hopefully will give us more of a profile, so we can get the bigger acts.

also the acadamey is about twice the size of the leadmill, if not more. at the back of the leadmill you can actually see the band, but when i went to see Machine Head at acadamey last year, at the back you couldn't see a thing :(

Theres a lot of threads about the whole weather map thing chaz...

I like Nottingham arena more than SHeffield....although that could be due to the fact that I've only been to two arena gigs ever, the one at SHeffield being Bjorn Again in Y8 (yes, really) and the one at Nottingham was Muse!

Nottingham's a better place to go to for gigs than Manchester, as afaik it's quicker to get there on the train, and my friends live near there so I can stay over. Hooray. Oh and once my friend accidentally dropped a whole box of washing powder in the fountains in the main square and foam went all over everywhere. SO Nottingham's gotta be a fun place....right?

I noticed with Avril Lavigne's up and coming tour that Sheffield seems to be missing off the list.

just a small point, but the M.E.N arena is the largest capacity arena in Europe. I believe the concert capacity is 21,000. So if a big band is doing 2 dates in Britain, it comes first before anywhere(including wembley).

well I think we can give that a miss

I did mean the bigger acts, sorry didn't make that too clear "decent bands" I would mean more of wider taste for people than say........Barney on Ice? :P

hopefully soon bigger acts will come to sheffield.

I mean sheffield is a bigger city than nottingham, right? (Regardless of the seating of the hallam FM arena)

I think Sheff is far better than Nottingham. Easier for parking, access, two good pubs across the road, and nicer people.
I dont like the Ice arena, the seating is very steep, pretty disconcerting when you've had a bevvy or ten.:o

manchester gets picked over sheffield as it has a bigger capacity and also can attract people from allover the north west.

Promoters then like to put gigs on at nottingham as it also has a large population within an hours drive,

They avoid sheffield as it is too close to nottingham and manchester and there can be a lot of cross over when trying to attract crowds

I

It's not the point. The point is a successful International artist is coming to the UK and is playing several big arena dates but Sheffield isn't on the list.

Depends on the stage configuration, but Sheffield has a max capacity of 12,000 for a concert and c8,000 for ice hockey / basketball - about the same as Wembley Arena and Birmingham, NEC.

Manchester Arena is huge!

but then it depends if manchester have seating behind the stage, they did when i saw elton john there last year but not for morrissey

This is all a bit subjective.

I work next to the Arena and remember catching the tram home with about 5000 Bob Dylan fans. Now If Bob's too old and worn out to count as an "event" performer, thats down to your personal taste.

I think that the arena has been steadily growing in popularity and attracts more than its fair share of top line acts.

I was @ the Stereophonics concert in 2001 and it was a 15,000 odd something fans there, that was a sell out!!!
I think the arena lies on the size of the venue!

lucasdigital - alot of good artists do play sheffield arena like elton john etc. but when alot of mainly american bands tour they only do a few arenas
