The shore potters society is a good one to try and spot. Thought to be the oldest removals/haulage company in Britain. They first came to service in 1498 using a horse & carriage. I think ive seen one of there vehicles in my lifetime.

Oh yeah, I see at least one of their wagons on every Motorway journey we ever go on, regardless of our destination.

I always used to say that if you haven't seen an Eddie Stobart Lorry on your travels, you haven't been on a Motorway obviously.

I always wondered though, what exactly do they carry in Eddie Stobart wagons? Is it just freight stuff, or logistics?

Not since they changed their livery........before that I used to note all the registration numbers down in a little book. :P

Everything. They 'rent' themselves out to other companies, and they've got a large contract with Tesco amongst other companies.

Hear Hear, I think you name it and Eddie Stobart carries it! Includes cans of coke and pet food. Look out for Tesco trailers with an Eddie cab unit on and theres aTesco distribution warehouse with plenty of Stobarts knocking around in Barlbrough

I bought a membership to the Eddie Stobart fan club for my grandma a couple of years back. They are a great company, even tho Eddie doesnt own them anymore, his brother does. Alway tidy lorries, plesant drivers, and their trucks are all well maintained. Not like some of the Diesel chuggers on the road nowadays.

I look out for them when I'm about, although we do get a couple come to work on occasion.

I'll agree about the pleasant drivers: I was at the Crick depot back in March and as one lorry came in, I took a photo of it, the driver kindly slowed down until I had taken it!

The other week I was at the M180/M18 services and an "Eddie" came in, I got chatting to the driver about the various depots, new fleet and he was very polite and chatty.

I have found the names on the new livery to be a bit small to read on some of them on the motorway, (as a passenger of course). Some of them have really strange names.

I'll agree with both those points! Go on then whats the strangest name you have ever seen on an Eddie Lorry??? Mine has to be Garrietta

Where abouts is this on the geekiness scale? Is it above or below train spotting?

The daft thing is train spotting is always considered "sad" wheeas anything on the roads is ok - silly really!

I’m an Eddie Stobart spotter too. My personal record is 13 on the A1 between the M62 and York! The names on the front are primarily the first names of drivers’ wives. I’ve heard they now have vehicles based in Europe where the fuel is cheaper. In a past era I also used to look out for Yelloway Coaches! What a com, plete idiot I am! But I enjoy it, and it’s something to do on the motorways. Also got three scale-model Stobart artics.

i reckon its pretty high up the scale, along with trains (there is no difference) but what i find the geeeekiest is the people who spot buses? oh look another 52, best get the number quick.........nah i dont get it.

I can remember growing up when you couldn't go on a motorway without seeing a Christian Salvessen truck and I guess now it's Eddie Stobart. It used to be part of the novelty of being on a motorway when we were little cos it usually meant we were going somewhere exciting, like on holiday :hihi: Must admit for some ridiculous reason now I always say Steady Eddie when I see one. And now I know there are names on the cabs, I'm going to be looking out for them. Trainspotter, bus spotter ... Damn :hihi:

Go to Carlisle cathedral it is lovely, though they have had the fllod since we last went. The ceiling is amazing, and they don't look at you too weirdly if you lay on your back on the floor staring at it.

i used to work as a waitress at a pub called the monckton arms in glaston, a village in god's own county (rutland, whatever anyone else maintains). a certain mr eddie stobbart used to be a regular... can't remember being very interested at the time, but then i started noticing the lorries everywhere...

don't approve of the new livery. i liked the retro look.

My brother and son are in the Eddie Stobart Fan Club. Everytime we go out in the car we are always looking out for them. Everytime we spot 1 we shout out Steddie Eddie. I travel down the A1 twice a week and i'm forever doing my mates head in shouting Steddie Eddie.

Stobbart was a typo error.
Just had a look at stobart's web site and they cross the channel 12,000 times a year, so presumably he was going to Ramsgate port and then to Ostend.

If there is a Tesco in area they may well have been going there. I have seen them at the port in Ostend though. Norbert Dentressangle, incidentally are the biggest user of cross channel services and had the first lorry on Eurotunnel.

Is there a difference?

Darbees
19-05-2008, 11:41
Is there a difference? The word logistics is a word to make haulage sound better and is often quite complex to such an extent it is now possible to earn a degree in logistics. It means amongst other things that the haulage company manages the distribution and warehousing of products. For example, in the case of supermarkets, companies like Stobarts collect full loads of a product from a manufacturer and store it in their warehouses, they then split loads up and take them with products they store for other manufacturers to specific supermarkets to be sold. They may also distribute other products to other companies en route. Everything on the road is freight.
