View Full Version : Why do people like murder dramas?
yer_get_meh 27-06-2006, 23:24 I was talking to the missus about this tonight, and we can't fathom it out. Why do people get entertainment out of either tv drama's or films which are about murders? I think people who enjoy this kind of "entertaiment" have a dark side to them, even though they are not real, it's still supposed to be a reflection of what happens in real life.
demoniac 27-06-2006, 23:30 i have a darkside but i never watch murder dramas matbe people like to try and solve it before there told whos done it
Why do people like anything? Why do people like Eastenders? It's totally depressing. Are you saying if I enjoy Poirot or Midsomer Murders I'm really some weirdo?
Why do people like Big Brother, it's completely boring. You can say the same about any sort of film/tv.

yep you can, but if you see, my point was about murder dramas not Big Bro etc. Dont get offended if I think its strange to get entertainment from death.
Lickable 28-06-2006, 09:26 Nobody likes eastenders, they just watch it... Nobody really knows why.
Don't worry I'm not :) To a point I think there's a bit of your usual voyeurism involved, hence why programs such as CSI (insert series here) are so popular. Some people are interested in trying to solve the crimes, some people are interested in the processes of solving the crimes and some people like watching the bad guys get caught.
Personally I love stuff like Poirot, Columbo etc etc, dunno why I just find them interesting with good characters and everything :)
Just for the record I'm not some mad psychopathic murderer ;)

Because they aren't so much about the murders, as the 'detective' story that follows. It wouldn't really be very interesting to have Dalziel & Pascoe hunting down the person who is nicking cars on the local estate would it? (Not that the police would ever allocate two detectives for that anyway).
Films which ARE about murders/murderers themselves tend to have a smaller audience.
yer_get_meh 28-06-2006, 10:34 Yep, I understand your replies, the teccie part of the programmes, investigating and doing a Columbo!!!! I think what I should have been clearer about was what sparked my post off. I saw an advert for silent witness last night and part of it wwas a scene in a kids playground which was tinted dark and showed a swing just swinging in the wind. I think it was about a kid being murdered, but I maybe wrong, but thats what it seemed to be signifying. I cannot understand people who would want to watch programmes like that.
Are we talking about the likes of Morse here?
People see a murder reported in reel one, then have to watch for the next couple of hours to see who the killer is. A long programme with several commercial breaks to keep the advertisers happy.
Of course, BBC broadcasts won't have the breaks, but the programme can always be sold abroad.

Some of them start as books....which strangely enough don't have commercial breaks ;) If it's not your thing fair enough. Could say the same about football or any sporting event on ITV/Sky...captive audience.

That's just ignorant! People enjoy films and dramas about murder because its part of our culture, its artificial chaos its not real. Its only sick individuals that have a dark side to them that see things in films and TV that they perceive as real....................If it isn't something they see on screen it would be something else.
People used to read (and still do) Shakespeare and say Edgar Allen Poe for the same reason...........Its not real life its drama, its exciting, its entertainment, its fun!
I like period dramas not murder mistery dramas - but I do like playing cluedo!!!!!
