View Full Version : Live Music Venues
Infestation 08-06-2004, 11:19 Hey everyone, I'm new here so be nice :)
Basically, I'm in a punk rock band, and we are looking for venues to play at. So far we have tried:
The Boardwalk
The Leadmill
Classic Rock Bar
Casbah
Corporation
The Grapes
The Point
Fez Club
Student Union Places (Foundry, Octagon etc.)
We're not having the best of luck at the moment, with only one show booked all summer (which I will of course be shamelessly advertising in the notices bit i erm... noticed). So if anyone knows any good venues, that would be a real nice help :D.
Thanks in advance,
Chaz - RejectedHalf
Classic Rock 08-06-2004, 14:30 You've played at the Classic Rock Bar? Under what name? Who with?
PuressenceUK 08-06-2004, 14:51 You could always try The Deep End in Hillsborough. Live music on several nights of the week.

sorry, i think you misunderstood what i meant. the only place we have played (so far) is the boardwalk.
yesterday i rang the classic rock bar to see what they could offer, and i was told to ring back after 6, when the manager would be in. i rang back, but it was engaged, then i had a family emergancy, so i couldnt try again. i'm planning on ringing back this evening, but as of yet, no luck :(
none of the other venues have been particularly helpful at all.
@PuressenceUK: thanks :D i'll give them a ring this evening.
get in touch with this guy...he puts on the Sheffield versus nights at the grapes
Basically itll be summit like Sheffield Vs Manchester or Sheffield Vs Leeds
Its usually a couple of Sheffield bands and a couple of bands from whichever the other city is
http://www.realpromo.co.uk/realhtml/ifacem.htm
or just book the grapes and do it yourself,.,..long live DIY
Fantomas 08-06-2004, 16:04 Yeah, Mark at Real Promotions is a good bloke.
From personal experience though I'd say booking the Grapes off your own back and doing your own promotion is by far the most satisfying way of going about it. It costs £50 (last time I heard) and that includes your sound engineer. You decide the entry price and keep all the door money. Course, you also have to do all the promotion yourself too but it's not too much hassle if you spread it around the band.
You'll probably get a tuesday or wednesday night cos you've not got a proven crowd yet but don't let that put you off.
Punk rock!
noseyrosie 09-06-2004, 00:10 You're lucky enough for the manager of the CRB being a regular on this site...so you can interrogate her...hehe
carcrash 18-06-2004, 14:08 Get in touch with me. I put on up to 4 gigs a week and I'm booking bands for late July and August.
As well as Mark at Real Promo you could also try Porkpie Promotions or Mentholman or Last Friday.
Go to www.soundaloud.com and then follow the links.
Classic Rock 21-06-2004, 12:51 So you rang the CRB to find it engaged, so decided to come onto the Forum to tell us. Why not ring the pub again? We'll give you a gig....but by giving up because it's engaged doesn't show much dedication. Why not even come down to the pub and introduce yourself.....it all makes for good self marketing. By posting on here to say you were asked to phone back but never did hardly gives anyone much sympathy for your attempts there I'm afraid.
 :surprised
You wrote 'as of yet, no luck' - sorry mate, no wonder there's no luck.....try picking up the phone. It's not always engaged.

Its hard for small bands to get their foot in the door so don't think one gig is bad luck. Play it and see what offers you get after, and carry on pestering.
The one important thing to do is carry on practicing, because when your time does come to play live you wanna be at your best. Most places won't book you for 2nd/3rd gigs if your absolutely awful.
Chris.

Ouch! Poor lad, he's only a wee Chaz!
Classic Rock 08-07-2004, 09:01 I know, but if he's going to get anywhere with his band then he needs to have a bit more dedication than he has shown.
We're a busy venue, we are on the phone virtually all the time early evening taking band bookings, if the phone was engaged that's because another band was talking to us....dedication and perseverance gets the gigs, not giving up on the first attempt cos the phone's engaged and then sulking and feeling sorry for yourself on the Forum. No sympathy - sorry.
I didn't get the impression that he'd given up calling, more just that he'd had a family emergency one night so hadn't got round to it, and hadn't got round to it the following night. Not that he'd given up just that he hadn't had a chance yet.
eviljock 08-07-2004, 12:17 Who bit Classic Rock in the bum? The guy's first posting was clear enough but CR goes jumping all over him "what name did he play under at the Classic Rock Bar". Then when he clarifies the situation, CR dances on his broken bones, screaming about phones being engaged, luck and sympathy. Give the lad a break and take two valium.

I got the impression that he was complaining that he couldn't get a gig. Perhaps there would be no need for him to post his thread if he'd have run the venues in question.
Bands can't have gigs handed to them on a plate for nothing. They've got to put some work in.

I think you're the one who needs valium! My post was typed quite calmly and in an explanatory way. I was hardly screaming - you'd know it if I was screaming, the smilies would have been used more than they were!
I note you're new to the Forum. You'll get used to us on here and our ways of communicating.
carcrash 09-07-2004, 07:14 I think anybody involved in Sheffield bands should say a big thanks to Sass and Buffy for what they have done for Sheffield music over the last few years.
