To keep yourself cool you could try one of these:
http://www.gadgets.co.uk/air_conditioner.html
Not likely to effect the overall room temperature too much but should keep you cooler if you direct it at your face.
ToryCynic 07-06-2004, 23:24 Jamie, and Nick with your billions of "e"'s LOL ;).
No seriously, Argos do these (hideous) but do the job at £30 coolers that are a light as well, you know those things?
Or get a desk fan and have that next to you. I do. U have now.
Also. you can get a program for your computer if you are concerned about your Computers fan temperature, doesen't do anything about it though!! (SpeedFan 4.12). It takes temperatures of your CPU fan every now and then. Mine is 37oC.
Phanerothyme 07-06-2004, 23:56 get a bedsheet. soak it in the cold water, wring it so it stops dripping, drape it over a open window. that *should* help a bit.
Alternatively go into desert mode - sleep in your cellar during the day and come out at night.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
Looks like a trip to B&Q (hillsborough) is in order first thing in the morning ..

That desktop unit looked cool t020 ... need something that's gonna keep me super cool tho.
Desert mode sounds interesting tho Phan ... maybe if I adapt to ... work from coolest room in house mode ...
Then I'd just need to up-root my PC ... which would mean no cable ... hmmm ... unless I get an extension ...

The £49 one at B&G looks exactly the same as the £89 one at argos !!
Err ... yeah ... don't anyone go down there before me and buy *MY* air cooler !!
Seems that the £49 B&Q air cooler can only be ordered online ... should be with me tommorow ...
How about other ideas for keeping cool !?
1) Fill 10 * 500ml plastic drinks bottles with water and pop in the freezer ... when frozen ... place these around the room.
2) Fill several buckets with ice cubes and place these around the room.
Would these ideas work !?
neeeeeeeeeek 08-06-2004, 10:18 move sohewhere cold Jamie... the arctic, try that.
DaBouncer 08-06-2004, 10:36 One bit of heat and everyone goes ballistic. OK the side effect to this great weather is that it’s hard to sleep at night and yes it’s sometimes muggy.
However when you’re indoors in the shade it’s much nicer. However if people must go OTT on something to cool them down…. I know the perfect thing for you…. It’s called a FAN.
We have one in the bedroom on full blast (well we did last night) and it did the trick. Circulates air around the room and helps us get a good nights sleep. Air conditioning units are expensive / can only be used in the odd few days of summer heat and noisey.
Weather folk have predicted that we’re going to have a poor summer this year (rain / bit of sun / rain / rain / rain / bit of sun / rain etc) so I wouldn’t waste my money and space on an air conditioning unit which will only dry the back of your throat and keep you awake with all the noise anyway.
If you lived in Spain / Canary Islands or the States I could understand the need cos their summers are WAY hotter, but I’m sure air conditioning is a little too much for merry old Engerland

All well and good if you're not working with 3 monitor screens and 2 computers in a room that's about 3 meters square... but that's the situation that myself and Jamie are both in...
The room temp hit around 40 degree's at the worst point and it's not a pleasant sort of heat either...
So this ain't OTT this is pure necessity...
Course the flip side is that come winter I don't need any heaters in the office.. but right now, it's a mite on the warm side ;)
Jamie (or Martin) let us know what they're like. I would be interested in knowing whether a) they work any better than a big fan, b) how much noise they make and c) if they leave your eyes and/or throat dry and sore in the morning.
Cheers :)
Will keep you informed Geoff.
I can let you all know that the bowl of ice cubes wasn't such a hot idea after all !!.

heh...
I tied a bag of ice cubes in front of the fan... seems to cool things marginally but nothing spectacular..
Classic Rock 08-06-2004, 15:38 I picked up a fab device in Thailand called a 'Cooly'. It's a long narrow bag of silicone gel that you run under the tap, it expands and stays cold and you wrap it around your neck. Instantly cools you down.
I've been using a fan in the bedroom too.
So Jamie, Martin - did the cooler turn up?
If so, spill the beans... :)

Still waiting for my delivery.. got a confirmation but absolutely no time for when it would turn up...
Ice in a bag thing works really well though when placed in front of a fan and a towel put underneath for the condensation..
Takes the edge off :)
Got mine @ 7.45 am this morning.
Actually they delivered 2 ... maybe they sent me yours Martin !? ...
Foolishly I phoned up to report their error ... and I was informed that I had only paid for 1 ...
The verdict ...
It's not as cold as a full on air con unit ... but it is cooling ... maybe if I filled it with ice cubes it would be even more cooling.
Not very quiet though ...

ToryCynic 09-06-2004, 22:08 1-Like the Pun!
2- Damn, I was going to give whoever's idea of the ice cubs a whirl! I'm in a smallish loft conversion with lots of A/V Equipment, did have 2 comps connected and they make me hot (and steamy) especially when the printer doesen't work. I plan to get the older one to work, I've deleted the Recovery partition! That's a story for later and network them together, but that's later.
ToryCynic 09-06-2004, 22:10 I keep forgeting to quote.
The quote was Jamie: "I can tell you all that the ice cube idea wasn't very hot" Back on Page 1.
I only have a £20 chrome desk fan, noisy mind!
Just swapping to my other main posting forum. Back soon.
Martin_s 10-06-2004, 09:31 Finally, the thing arrived and he didn't ask me to sign...
Well overall glad I've got it now... it's soooooo much better..
As for noise levels, well if you're working with PC's all day it's about the same noise level of a PC with a couple of air flow fans in so it's not really a major problem on that front.
I am very glad that you two now have proper air coolers! :)
I was beginning to get a bit worried about this water/ice and electrical equipment combination! :(

Not half as worried (Read: scared ****less) as I was when I realised that the ice bag had actually leaked and there was water in the fan... A quick trip to the house power breaker solved that issue before mop up operations began...
The heat did strange things to my common sense I can tell ya :loopy:
