View Full Version : If anyone lives in the Woodseats area and has a young lad...
... and your lad was out with his brothers/mates on their bikes this afternoon... you might want to ask if they were the lads that I saw riding their bikes in the bus lane on Chesterfield road, travelling in the opposite direction to the traffic!!! It was about 4.45pm. You might want to remind them that buses are quite heavy and can go quite fast, and that taxis, BMWs and other cyclists use the bus lane as well.
If you want to keep them alive, I suggest keeping them inside or sending them to a cycling proficiency course!!

It's just natural selection at it's finest, let it happen. .

only taxis and BMW's and cyclists, what about the other cars :)
they seem to have stopped doing the cycling proficiency course here in Sheffield !!!! i would like to see kids doing it as it gives them an insight and training into safe bike riding:rant:

It's generally only BMWs I see using it when they're not supposed to... oh and Mondeo man of course!! ;)
Actually I'm beginning to agree on the natural selection idea...

Yes, there's nothing I enjoy more than going to fatal road traffics involving kids :loopy:

It seems to me that you might be unaware of the function of these so called bus lanes at the time you mention 4.45pm.
They are open to all traffic. The only time they run as restricted lanes for cycles taxis and busses is for an hour and a half during morning and evening rush hour. That's about an hour after you mentioned. Indeed you should be driving in these lanes at other times unless you are turning right, overtaking slower moving traffic, parked vehicles or stopped busses. The reason for this is because it prevents congestion with traffic using two lanes instead of one.
So rather than calling for young lads to be doing the cycling proficiency course, it sounds to me that it is you who should be getting hold of the latest highway code and studying it.

It seems to me that you failed to note the hint of cynicism / tongue in cheek in Agents posting.
I could equally tangent with proposed rules and regulations, in a vain effort to make me look smarter/more informed, but the reasons for doing this just dont weigh against the efforts required.
So rather than waddin' in feet first with all the above, it seems to me that it is you who needs to get a hold on reality and keepin' it. .

Thank you. Whatever vehicle was using the bus lane, they would have come into contact with the lads who were travelling in the wrong direction. That was my main point - it wasn't about which vehicles should and shouldn't use the bus lanes. I only mentioned the vehicles because that is who you are likely to see in the bus lanes at all times.
mrplodge 27-06-2006, 17:54 4.45 is in rush hour the last time i was in town and I would have thought this was a bus lane at this time

It is indeed. I checked when I was out and the restrictions on that lane (past Homebase) are in force between 16.30 and 18.30. Not trying to be a smartarse, just wanting to make everyone aware of the restrictions so that no Forumite gets caught. MuddyCoffee, you're not that BMW I keep seeing using the Woodseats bus lanes are you?! ;)

No that isn't me,
Usually on Blue motorcycle, "see avatar", passing through woodseats most mornings and lunchtimes.
The main problem with the lanes is that about 90% of all traffic doesn't realise that the bus lanes are only part time. And you often see a long queue of cars stopped and doing scarey last minute swerves on the northerly lane after someone stops to turn into homebase. All those vehicles going straight on should normally be in the left hand lane and then the traffic would be safer, the traffic would flow, and there would be no scarey moments as cars dive into the clear lane at the last minute without looking.
On the whole I think the whole of chesterfield road between Meadowhead and Beeton road is a comlplete abortion and the traffic planners should be shot. As a local resident I understand it but people from other towns find it incomprehensible.
In my view the best system for the whole of chesterfield road would be to split it into 3 wide lanes and have a tidal system like further down at london road used to be. Then there wouldn't be any need for green coloured lanes, and the heavy traffic flow would always have favourable road capacity depending on the time of day. It would be simple to understand for people who were unfamiliar with the area and there would be a more equal use of roadway with busses still making great progress.

Then you've probably sailed past me in that morning traffic then!
The problem with cars using the bus lanes outside peak times is that people are also allowed to park in the bus lanes during those times as well, so you'd get people swerving out into the right hand lane to avoid the cars, and that poses its own risks.
