The advert (bottom right).

Wonder if the 'Leader's' of these groups have actually all chipped in out of their own pocket's and paid for the advert.

Or have they used some of the 'free government handout money' to pay for it ?

If it's the latter....i think the people in the communities that they are supposed to represent (Shirecliffe,in my case) should be asking questions as to why they are wasting good money on such things, when areas such as the one where i live are rapidly going downhill.

rant over !

Could we have more info on what's troubling you?

I don't usually buy / read the Sheffield Star. Their very poor website is painful enough for me.

It's this he's objecting to:

Anti-racist advert (http://img1.photobucket.com/albums/0903/sheffmax/Things/scan0001.jpg)

I'm guessing that Amicus would have paid for this out of their political levy.

Why do people object to an ad, probably costing less than £100, advising people not to vote for a racist party?

The 'leaders' you talk about represent a very large number of groups that work tirelessly to better the living conditions of their communities and members. Newspaper articles do cost money, but talk is cheap!

I already posted a post similar to this advert...got told off because apparently everyone has the right to an opinion...fair enough, unless, surely, that leads to racism, Islamophobia, 'get back to your own country' ignorance etc.

Erm its a fairly standard "please use your vote" thang - but rather than saying please vote for X it says please don't vote for X - I don't see why anyone should be any more put out by it than any other polital broadcast/advert? And it does make a fairly important point - extremists tend to vote, moderates tend not to - if you don't want extremists (of any flavour) in power vote for who you want in power!

Hi,

What is the problem of the Ad? I agree that it can't cost that much to print it. As a member of Amicus, I have no problem with it.

There are quite a number of groups listed so they could share the cost between them. I can't see much 'wasting of good money'.

Loads of different political parties & group leaders can and do print ads to support their causes.

Advertising in the Star ain't cheap - this ad will probably have cost thousands rather than £100. Can't disagree with the sentiment though.

Thanks. Couldn't quite understand the 'crazy' pictures panda...it's a pretty well known phrase these days, sadly.

Some years ago during a paedophillia case the house of a paediatrician was attacked by a mob in Portsmouth.

In 1914, the properties of Germans in the UK ws attached, and even the Royal Family changed their name to Windsor to avoid problems.

In 1939-45 there were similar cases.

this sort of kneejerk reaction to perceived threats is nothing new. Hitler based a whole way of Government on it. Today, though, more people see atrocities on TV and it doesn't take much for mob mentality to take over.

I'd throw the book at anyone who persecutes someone for the beliefes - of any religion, colour or creed. Whilst a lot of the issues are mob mentality, Britain is STILL regraded (amazingly enough) as a very tolerant country. There will always be arses who behave like animals in any culture and the true issue is not to put adverts in the media every now and again but to generate a culture in which tolerance AND respect by ALL participants is encouraged and expected.

This means that minority groups, as well as majority groups, need to bear this in mind.

I think that there is a real danger of making more of the BNP than they deserve. All this calling attention to them, a bunch of marginalised xenophobes with no real policies, might be seen to be doing their promotion work for them. And they get to point to adverts like that, and say,
"look its true. We are marginalised and persucuted more than immigrants are"

Wheras really they are little boys who have never grown up.

You're right in many ways, but unfortunately, a lot of people will vote for them, so surely it's better to try and counteract that than just hope it won't happen?

missing the point !!

what deanprez should have elaborated on is we live in shirecliffe and we cant get any repairs done cause the council are only bothered about knocking the houses down and the forum are supposed to help us with things like funding and regeneration etc not wasting money on adverts !!!

Well I wouldn't see it as wasting money if it stops those racist arses getting into power.

having seen the ad, i can guarantee that max is right in saying who paid for it. I know many of the signatories thru my work & union, and having spoken to a couple of them, it is indeed Amicus thats shelled out - and good on 'em.

that said, i'd have had no problem with the local forums paying out for it - part of the reason for their existence is to promote positive cohesive communities - something which is made all but impossible when neo-nazi's like the bnp get a toe hold in the area.

If you're going to PM me asking if I know what the BNP's policies are, perhaps you could set it up so I could PM you back.

Yes, I do know what their policies are. They are insane. But as you said, not having a go, each to their own...
