View Full Version : Where to buy logs (firewood) at this time of year?
After five years of looking, I've finally found a patio heater I like
I just need something to burn on it now :)
Where can I get firewood from at this time of year (and this time of night, preferably ;) )
I know some garages do it in the winter, but I suspect the forecourts are full of England flags now :suspect:
bluebaracus 24-06-2006, 20:47 Hello strix.
Sorry to hijack your thread, but im after a heater as well!...can i ask where you purchased it from?
As for those logs You could try Ecclesall wood saw mills, Wentworth saw mill (through the village and do a right) or I saw a sign in Arnold lavers the other day- " Bag of fire wood £1".
Alternativly you could burn some flags!

You could always cut a tree down & get your other half to carry it home and chop !!
I got a large firepit from homebase. It's low, big, round, black, looks like a shallow tray on ornate legs, and it looks like it may be able to barbecue too - though I don't fancy trying to clean it afterwards, so I shan't be doing that :gag:
It was about £70, which is less than I have seen similar in magazines for, but it's better quality than the cheaper one I saw in big W a few weeks ago, which looked downright dangerous being as ricketty as it was :?
cgksheff 24-06-2006, 20:55 Sorry.
Ecclesall Woods have a sign at the roadside saying something like "No Firewood".
Homebase's website is rubbish
They've got loads of things instore that aren't on there :suspect:
They had a very modern 3 legged stainless steel firepit for £150ish too
bluebaracus 24-06-2006, 21:00 strix,
Many thanks- i shall investigate furthur-
A freind of mine was after some logs like yourself strix, and phoned some tree fellers ( believe it or not). After a few calls, he managed to secure large quantitys of tree fell for nowt (he had to collect).
It may have been me who suggested that ;)
If it was to feed a domestic fire all winter, I'd do that, but for such a small quantity, I'd be wasting their time :(
sandpiper 28-06-2006, 10:00 Wesley Nicholls coal merchants at Wadsley Bridge sell logs and kindling and solid fuel for your patio heater / chimnea
Strix do you know where Pitsmoor road is?
there is a field that has a large amount of wood that has recently been chopped down and some being burned. cant see anyone stopping you taking it. maybe ask the council first though.
yorkiepudd 28-06-2006, 16:45 Did Homebase not have any bags of logs to burn. Most of the DIY's stock them usually.
We eventually bought some in Homebase, but at a fiver for a bag, I think we'll be looking elsewhere in future ;)
EstherQoP 01-07-2006, 22:38 You could always try Dore garden centre. Thats where i get mine from - good stuff and cut into manageable pieces
Waltheof 01-07-2006, 23:36 Why bother to buy firewood, when you can get tons of it off skips all over the city? Admittedly we don't have a wood-burning stove to run, but we have open fireplaces and I stock up on wood as much as I can for use in winter or at cold times. And you get good exercise cutting and chopping it up!
