View Full Version : Why do people do this...?
johnbradley 24-06-2006, 13:05 ive noticed that some of you lot like to end your posts by typing your nickname at the bottom.
which we can already see, to the side of your post.
so why bother? is it just in case we're too thick to catch the large letters spelling it out for us to the left?
it niggles me. does it niggle you? are you one of them?
Harleykim 24-06-2006, 13:06 Yes, I am
Harleykim
BrainThrust 24-06-2006, 13:07 I put my real name at the bottom of my posts.
Y'gotta problem with that?
Wilf
melthebell 24-06-2006, 13:09 its like signing a letter or something
SpiderPete 24-06-2006, 13:10 I just stick to links in my signature, my real name is part of my username
Yes but some just put their proper name. Sometimes I do, maybe if someone has directed a comment at me and I suppose I think it gives a more personal edge. Perhaps I think wrong.:hihi:
Joan.
shoeshine 24-06-2006, 13:13 I never do it! :)
(shoeshine)
SpiderPete 24-06-2006, 13:16 oops wrong thread , lol
Isn't this possibly the most trivial thread ever created?
Gordon
johnbradley 24-06-2006, 13:17 arrgghh!! im surrounded by them...
if you have a nickname thats different to your proper name, then signing off with the proper one does add a personal touch, i can understand that:)
but if its identical...whats the point? why do i have to see your bloomin nickname twice in one go?
this better not just be one of them 'irrational fear' things, that would suck.
StarSparkle 24-06-2006, 13:18 it niggles me. does it niggle you? are you one of them?
Yes, I am - and proud of it! ;) :P
It's like Melthebell says, it's like putting your signature at the end of what you've written. Owning your words.
StarSparkle :)
johnbradley 24-06-2006, 13:25 but can you truly 'own' your words with a nickname? is ownership related to the person or the persona?
if it is the former, then why not put your 'proper' name on there. it it is the latter, then of what value is that ownership anyway, as the nickname is a construction one step removed, and therefore not intrinsically related...in other words (if my premise is correct) the nickname has no entitlement to 'ownership', and therefore signing off with it has little value.
??
muddycoffee 24-06-2006, 13:37 I'm very confused about this thread.
Tarquin
bigflesh 24-06-2006, 13:38 Tarquin, me too
Cecil
i usually end my posts by signing with my real name, unless a thread im posting on a lot and then dont bother. i think people may sign with usernames for same reasons as you would with your proper name perhaps for politeness or to add personal touch etc but perhaps they are people who want to preserve their anonymity. If a person does not want to disclose their real name then i see no reason why they should not be allowed to sign their posts in another way. however if its not for reasons of anonymity then it would seem a bit of a strange thing to do.

george bush ............................errrrrrrrm
I've always done this, but honestly never dreamed someone would find it annoying! IMO, people who don't use capital letters, proper punctuation, or grammar are far more irritating. Reading their posts is like reading an eye chart.

StarSparkle 24-06-2006, 15:37 but can you truly 'own' your words with a nickname? is ownership related to the person or the persona?
Yes, of course you can. I am known as 'StarSparkle' on here, so obviously I sign what I say on here as 'StarSparkle'.
Not quite sure what all the fuss is about
StarSparkle
PS Hey Sparklesista! Great to see you back posting!
johnbradley 24-06-2006, 17:39 ^ good point, my babbling was probably the result of a large 'double-bagger' cup of tea:)

rubydazzler 24-06-2006, 18:11 ending a post with your username or real name, why? it's totally superfluous ....
posting on a thread isn't like typing a letter, it's a written version of conversation. you don't end every comment by saying your name, do you?
or do you:suspect:
ps: it's "def leppard" btw :D
MonkeyLover 24-06-2006, 22:36 I Didn't Do It Before, But Im Going To Do Now, Just This Once, Just To Annoy You!!!!!

I was just pandering to his'her little idiosyncracy, dear ... I didn't start the thread :D but I agree it's unnecessary to type your name again at the end - we do know who you are after all ;)
