It intrigues me why some one would want such a brutal animal as a pet.
When they are fluffy kittens, fair enough. But when they grow up and start dragging birds from their nests etc. they are hardly lovable are they?

And when they look at you, they are probably thinking 'if I was big enough mate, I would grab you with my claws and eat you'. I can't see the point of these utterly selfish, troublesome beasts. You can't even take them for walks.

Posting as I am with one furry behind my neck and one between my ankles in my recliner- I'm pretty sure that mine are snuggly and lovable. I have 4 cats- and none of mine hunt. They're purely decorative.

Actually- my last post is a lie. They don't hunt for mice, but they do occasionally catch spiders, butterflies, moths, woodlice, flies and, yelping as they do it, wasps. Oh, and last week I had to make my big daft tom cat let go of the spaniel he took exception to.

Wrong LC, you can take them for walks.

I did just that a couple of nights ago with one of ours. She walked at the side of my legs (to heel as you would say) like a well trained dog, and did a full circuit of the cul-de-sac we live on.........:)

The added bonus was she didn't dump on anyone's garden, the pavement or the verge.

The good news is that those of you who don't like cats, don't have to have one. That's that cleared up then.

The cat - human relationship is quite a strange on, but has existed for thousands of years. Obviously quite a fair few people think that cats are pretty cool. I know I do. :)

Well, as much as I despise the flea ridden, worthless little creatures, I have to confess that I was born in the year of the Tiger. I would be more than happy for you to take me walkies, providing you don't mind being eaten. Apart from that, I'm certainly not selfish and I'm no trouble really..........:hihi: :hihi:

Well, cats have always graced The Towers, and will always do so.

Working hard to avoid the usual 'cats kill wildlife, are arrogant, etc.' arguments I would say that cat owners are sort of...well....normal people.

Looking at fictional cat lovers....we have the assasin in Graham Green's 'This Gun For Hire' who pistol whipped someone who teased his pet cat. We have Ernst Stavros Blofeld, cat lover and Bond super-villain extraordinaire - enough said. Chief Miles O'Brien, Star Trek Deep Space Nine's cheif engineer and all round good egg. Staying with Trek - Lieutenant Commander Data - an android trying to be human and sharing his quarters with Spot the cat.

Muriel Spark was a cat lover, and I'm convinced that Truman Capote MUST love cats - at the end of 'Breakfast at Tiffanys' 'Cat' ends up with a nice warm home; he treated 'Cat' better than a lot of his human characters!

We aelurophiles are nice folks, honestly...except for the odd super criminal and psychopath... :)

A colleague at work has recently set up home with a new belle who is a cat owner. Since moving in with her he comes to work coughing and sniffing. I once asked him if he'd been smoking the night before because he sounded just like someone who'd smoked a whole packet.

But no, unfortunately he is allergic to the cats.

I offered him use of my Mum's Greyhounds as a cast iron cure to rid him of his allergy but he turned the offer down as this would also be a cast iron way of relieving him of his new love.

Tell him to get some one-a-day antihistamines. Ceterizine dihydrochloride from Tesco; less than a pound a packet. Problem sorted  .

I have two cats - Merlin and Jesse. Both are beautiful, intelligent and graceful creatures. The people who share their homes with cats are likewise :) .

IMO Cats show no loyalty whatsoever, they wonder in and out at will and just lead an independant life. Some cats have more than one owner household due to their unloyal nature, they hardly compare to the unquenchable need for love exhibited by any dog

It's not so much a problem in the UK - but cat owners who leave them indoors for their entire lives like some of the Yanks do, not sure what it says about 'em but that's like putting a kid in a kennel.

Cats are unnatural as it is and when allowed out they decimate innocent animals but keeping them indoors because they might get run over or ripped apart by a mink? unstable springs to mind.

Personally i think it's more to do with the fact that they know their cat doesn't love 'em and will go to any house to get it's food so they torture a cat by not giving it a little bit of freedom to prove them wrong, as they always do.

i think to say cats are wholly disloyal, and are only 'in it' for the food and shelter, is a load of nonsense.

yes, the affection they show can be self-serving, and they are more interested in their own agenda most of the time...which appears to involve sleeping, and maiming small animals.

but they definately show their 'owners' affection which isn't solely motivated by the immediate need for food...my cat basil will stuff his face, waddle about outside for a bit and then sprawl his rather considerable mass over my lap.

ill keep shifting him off, but he'll keep wanting to be matey and hang out. if fact, as i type he is layed out on the cushion next to me, dribbling away quite happily.

i dont want to turn this into a dog/cat debate, because it's obvious who's won it. so naff off dog-nobs, cats are fnckin groovy. end of.

Whatever, people who keep their cats indoors are guilty of cruelty.

Of course, most of it was based on fact as well. Not that feline fans would have it that their cutesy wootsey ickle cat didn't actually like being kept indoors 24 hours a day. That doesn't happen in the UK, hopefully.

I have a cat as a pet, hes a vile, smelly, incestuous monster who would kill anything smaller than him in a heartbeat, he only pretends to be affectionate if theres a chance of a feed and he delights in crapping only on the most valuable plants in my garden, he sprays his vile smelling scent onto my pond which kills the fish, he drives my neighbours dogs into a state of insanity and when hes not doing all these things, he spends his time asleep on the bed.

Is he black and white? I can't quite make him out; the photo's a bit dark and I can't get the bigger pic to load (due to the Javascript settings on my computer, I think).

Cats killing birds is not nature. That's why so many tweety birds are in decline. If it was natural nature would be keeping the numbers up.

Cats are like mink - totally alien to the surroundings and they are responsible to driving birds to extinction... or at least extinction in Britain anyway.

There were cats of all sizes in the British Isles and Europe long before humans came along, they became extinct shortly before the last ice age. WE are more alien to this country than cats are. And I bet we kill more wildlife than any moggy.

An acquaintance of mine did her PhD in the matter of diminishing wildlife, and would you believe (no, really) that the common 'knowledge' that cats are no 1 enemy to bird life came from a big study sponsored by the big industrial agro-chemical companies who have decimated the countryside. Given cats are responsible for killing 55 million songbirds a year, for fun, of course that isn't having a neglible (sp) effect.

What's the difference between a cat owner and a fox hunt? about 54.9million innocent deaths.

Given those that actually rely on birds for survival, like the sparrowhawk, only kill twice as many as cats on average, it's telling the devastation caused.

I think you should think about the amount of people who are murdered for fun, by other people. Rapists, peodophiles, people who have sex with animals, and generally other sick people. Cats killing a few birds is hardly a big problem is it? Besides, what can we do about it? IT'S NATURE

Time for another cold bath, methinks.:hihi:

What can be done about it?

Cats don't come within 20 metres where i live 'cos they get the sonic equivalent of an Elton John concert.

As for those few songbirds that are killed, all 55 million yearly inc endangered species to Britain, then there should be a question what should be done.

I believe cat owners only change nature when it suits them... like shoving their cats face in it's own crap proudly produced on the new Carpet Right carpet purchased only weeks earlier. The cat soon decides to wait until going outside.

Maybe cat owners could leave the carcass of one of the several songbirds killed out, when it gets infected with maggots and riddled with flies remind the cat (and themselves) of the horrendous devastation they are doing to the natural environment. Certainly a maggot strewn 'toy' won't be pleasant for cat nor owner.

round here there's a bit of a rat problem:- my cat is an excellent hunter, so I get lots of "naice" ;) surprises waiting for me on my doorstep in a morning (aww, bless) he gets pigeons, rats, mice... fantastic!

Nope, not one iota of complaint, he's ridding the area of vermin. not got a problem with that, In fact I'm quite proud of him, and his wonderful hunting capabilities, in a "squicky" 'Oh, boy! What have you caught for me today" kind of way!

As I said in a previous post, get a cat PROBLEM SOLVED!

An acquaintance of mine did her PhD in the matter of diminishing wildlife, and would you believe (no, really) that the common 'knowledge' that cats are no 1 enemy to bird life came from a big study sponsored by the big industrial agro-chemical companies who have decimated the countryside. Surprise. Shoeshine you are spot on.

Anyway, round my parts the only wildlife to torture are pigeons. Any complaints? Didn't think so.
I have also read that in certain parts of southern Europe that song birds are considered a delicacy, along with swallows and swifts etc.
Apparantly they put up massive nets to catch them in their migrations.
When this was being done as a cottage industry, it probably made no difference, but as with everything it is now done on an industrial scale :(

I think your reading a little too much into this, Somehow, I don't think you will change anyones feelings towards cats. I will always be happy for my cat to kill birds, Good on him :)

Maybe you should start a campaign or something, to try and stop the "horrendous devastation"...You see how you can change nature. I'm sure you will do really well!

Try and train them to do some useful killing, pigeons and starlings for example.
They only go after the birds everyone loves, that is why they have a bad name among animal lovers. :(

Cats are pretty intelligent, I hope they dont think of this, because if they do the 55 million million million birds that are killed each second by murderous, alien cats from hell are going to seem like a drop in the ocean. At least itll be quiet in the mornings, the damn things with their pointless tweeting drive me nuts.

Much as I like them, I dont think by any stretch of the imagination they can be described as intelligent.
If they are why do you see so many squashed in the middle of the road? :hihi:

I was arguing with some of my mates about cats, just the other day.
Im with the OP, they are horrible and disgusting creatures. When presenting my arguement to my mates, they said...

"the egyptians worshiped cats, thy were smart, they built the pyramids."

My reply was...

"hows that smart, they wasted years building huge graves for dead people."

They were stumped.

Ahhh, just remembered a good point of owning a cat.

They kill goblins, as seen in Steven Kings - Cats eyes.

But as one of Britain's greatest economists pointed out, pyramid building was a very sensible economic policy, in that it created work for a substantial percentage of the population and then the multiplier effect provided work for most of the rest. Digging huge holes and filling them in again is also eminently sensible for the same reason. I agree with you totally about cats though.

The cat haters out there are quite right! Along with killing 55 trillion birds per second, invading Poland in 1939, and spreading the black death through Europe, cats have had a detrimental effect on the world for decades. For example:
Osama Bin Tiddles here wants nothing more than to bring down Western civillization.

And..
Lee Harvey Fluffy-Kins was solely responsible for the assassination of Kennedy. (There was a Persian tom on a nearby grassy knoll)

So I have to agree with the cat haters, but hope isnt completely lost! Cats dont always get it their own way.

Cats are intelligent because they managed to get humans to care for them and treat them like fluffy sweet little cuddly babies in spite of them being selfish thieving fur-bearing killing machines. And I`ve seen far more humans squashed in the middle of roads than cats.

Nuff Said?
