Hello all,

We are thinking of moving to stannington, up at the top of the hill. Currently we live over near eccelssall road.
Whats stannington like ? pubs look ok on drive past, are the folk friendly etc ?

many thanks.

Hello,

I live at lower Stannington, about half a mile from the village. My impression of the village is that it is a pleasant, sleepy place to live. Its a long settled (high number of retired folk)neighbourhood and middle class with a little 'm' so no powerboats or racing cars outside peoples homes.

I'd like to live up there but the the extra half mile climb would kill me (I cycle to work). There are some wonderful views across the Rivelin valley and you're a stones throw from dairy farmland and the Peak District National Park.

Yings Kitchen is a pretty good Chinese take-away, their servings are huge!

I don't know if the people are friendly, most neighbourhoods have their good'ens and bad'ens...

Hope this helps

Hi I live in Stannington village, and it is lovely, the people are friendly, but not in your face. The schools are quite good, so I have been told. You have some spectacular views, you are about 20 mins away from real open country side. Mostly quiet, they do like football on a sunday in the park, we have a village fete, every year around july. On christmas day a brass band walks round seranading you with christmas carols. Bus service is not too bad, local shops are okay with a spar and a local co-op.

Nice place, house prices are stable and rising in certain areas, get a bit more for your cash than in ecclesall.
Use SBS to move you there...i think they live somewhere near to stannington

I live at the top of the hill behind the old cricket pitch.
You have the Peacock, Rose and Crown, the Crown and Glove (Top House) and the Hare and hounds (the worst of the lot as they let the annoying kids in to get drunk). The others however are friendly pubs with good food. There's the village shops just 5 minutes walk down the road. You have a good sandwhich shop, the chemist, hardwear store, hairdressers, Co-op, Spar and the chinese chippy.

The park is pretty big and has a bowling green, playground, basketball nets and a tennis court although they are on concrete. The doctors surgery is good and there is the dentist at the bottom of Stannington road.

It is quiet and you have the added luxury of the countryside just up the road.

Hope you enjoy it when you get here:thumbsup:

I live in the Matlock area, have since I was 9.

Very nice place to live is Stannington in my view.

Peaceful but not too peaceful if you get my drift.

Many nice pubs (which of course I don't go in :P.... dum dee dum) and lucasdigital I agree with the chinese take-away- tastes much better when you've had a few beers :P.

As for the village folk... well I've met my share of both good and bad people but I would say the majority are good people.

Duffman the hare and hounds is a pub where they serve younguns but it's an awful pub neway...

And the Sportsman has gone downhill over the last few years as well *tut tut*

I thought it would change when it changed hands 2 years ago, but apparently not... :(

Deerstalker's gone bust as well, but that place has changed hands in the last 6 years more times than I care to remember :loopy: shame though, their pub quiz was decent-ish, and no chavs whining about it being fixed cos of the same team in the tap room winning every week, unlike the Sportsman.

I have a feeling the Sportsman will be changing hands again quite soon.

I don't go in there anymore because it's full of chavs and idiots.

It seems that even the chavs have had enough of it and from what I've heard it would be more lively in a morgue than it is in the Sportsman nowadays.

I really hope someone decent takes it over. It has loads of potential and is a decent sized place. What it needs is a husband and wife team who have lots of pub experience and plenty of cash for regeneration.
