The next few months will be an exciting time for contemporary art in Sheffield. Along with Site Gallery’s regular programme of free exhibitions, we are also working in collaboration with Sheffield Contemporary Art Forum to co-ordinate: ART SHEFFIELD 03 - a city wide contemporary art event taking place from 29 March - 19 April . The aim is to encourage local audiences to get further acquainted with contemporary art and to put Sheffield on the map nationally as a centre for vibrant contemporary art.

ART SHEFFIELD 03
29 March - 26 April

Contemporary art by national and international artists will relate to the city and the urban experience. Installed in a warehouse is Georgina Starr’s Bunny Lake Drive-In - a replica drive-in movie set, along with films, and Smith and Stewart’s A Black Thread 2. In total work by over 50 artists will be shown at venues around the city, including Site, the Millennium & Graves galleries, S1 & Bloc project spaces, the Winter Gardens, as well as various public works and events.

See www.artsheffield.org for details or contact art@sitegallery.org

This thread has been pulled up from the swampy depths of the Sheffield Forum for some reason or another.

So its quite out of date!

And yes, its VERY annoying about the loss of the darkrooms :(

I dunno. We can't post without 'searching', but we're not allowed to dredge old stuff up.

And nobody has answered my question

I must get to the Tate sculpture exhibition that is on at the moment.

Mind you, I did think it was a bit tedious that the gallery found it necessary to use a 12" willy to entice people in.

Whilst on the subject of contemporary art can anyone remember the name of the female artist who was sent away with a flea in her ear for the work proposed (the golden column) for the top of Fargate a few years ago?

The man on the poster/leaflet/banner ad doesn't seem to have a willy of any sort let alone one 12" long.

I think you refer to the naked man overlooking Arundel Gate. He's clearly suffering from the cold. THere are some interesting naked women in the exhibition.

If you are after art, don't forget that Open Up Sheffield is an annual event (the closing date for entries is almost upon us, so hurry up). It will run for just over a week from the 30th April.

Goto Fairy Dreams web site - then to Links, and there's a link to open up Sheffield.

It's basically a week where artists open up their workshops and allow the public to come and loop around + talk to them.

Whilst searching for ART on this wesbite I found this discussion strand. Quite old, but I thought I'd refresh it to let people know they can keep up to date with ART in Sheffield by visiting www.artsheffield.org and joining the free mailing list.

You'll get free listings through the post every quarter telling you about exhibitions and events in galleries across the city, as well regular news emails and updates inviting you to special events and private views every month or so.

If you sign up to the mailing list before the end of August 2005, we'll also enter you in a prize draw to win Fopp vouchers or limited edition prints from the Designer's Republic.

We're working on a new version of the website at the moment, so listings for May-July 2005 will be up at the end of this week (end of April 2005).

Hope you enjoy!

Does it not depend on wether you mean 'contemporary' as in 'modern' or contemporary as in 'current'.

Like some 'modern art' is rather pants (Tracey Emin) but some contemporary artists are actually fantastic (Kristan Baggaley).

Infact Kristan is a fantastic local artist who does amazing paintings of Sheffield and the peaks.
