View Full Version : Would you class last of the summer wine as entertainment?
Craig7777 23-06-2006, 05:00 Personally i really liked it when i was young and thick
Now i realise its about as entertaining as slamming my hand in a door
Your thoughts?:)

She is actually a geisha
Geisha
a Japanese woman trained to entertain men with conversation and singing and dancing
:)
Jimbob1989 23-06-2006, 08:16 I use to find it entertaining too :( not its just a bit boring.

Your right they should send them three mature chaps to falaraki for a few months, now that would be worth watching:)
Used to like when I was little but not very interesting now.

It made it better knowing that Bill Owen (Compo) was a true Yorkshireman.
cgksheff 23-06-2006, 09:15 I always thought it was one of those reality tv thingies that follows the activities of .......
Owdlad, Viking, DonK .....
You guess the rest!
BasilRathbon 23-06-2006, 12:12 Most people miss the point with "Last Of The Summer Wine". The point of the programme is to appeal to the..er...more elderly generation. For young people to criticise it is rather like complaining that "Little Britain" (or whatever comedies trendy young kids watch these day) doesn't appeal to pensioners.
For the record, although I'm not a pensioner, I do find "Last Of The Summer Wine" a relaxing way to spend half an hour. Sure it's a bit cliched and predictable these days, but it's well-written, beautifully observed and the scenery's great......

Exactly,
My parents still watch it I think, but I have got far more interesting things to do than to watch things on the TV.
If people want to watch slow gentle drivel like this who can complain. To me a big sofa in front of the TV all night looks the same as a coffin. While there is still life in me I will find something useful to do. Only last night I found myself carreering down a steep grassy bank in Graves park in a bath on wheels..
CaptainSwing 23-06-2006, 12:54 The first couple of series, with Michael Bates, were pretty good dialogue-based comedy (I think - it was a very long time ago and my memory might be deceiving me).
The last 20-odd series, though, have been repetitive slapstick-based rubbish from what I've seen. Not surprising I suppose as they've all been written by the same person, who also writes the equally OAP-friendly 'Keeping Up Appearances'.

about time you had a bath muddycoffee:)
sheffdan 24-06-2006, 13:19 Last of the summer wine is a horse thats been dead for 20 years that still gets repeatedly flogged!

LOL my thoughts exactly.
Well , it has deteriorated over the years ------I think most long-running comedies do .
However , it's like Shakespeare , if you compare it to something like Big Brother . Isn't it amazing , too , how many people on S.F. , have commented or looked at the BB thread compared to other television programmes or alternative media ?
Is it representative of the whole population in statistical terms ?
my mam was in the one with the big carrot, not acting or anything but they did abit in the market and she used to have a stall there so shes in the background. i used to like watching it when it was the original 3 but since the new ones come into it i think its daft
Compared to most of the absolute crap that's 'shovelled' on to TV screens these days:
Hollyoaks
Big Brother
I'm a Celebrity......
ALL soaps
Casualty
Holby City
Crummy Yank action films
Dream Team
Footballer's Wives
Little Britain
US sitcoms
Game shows
...and a thousand others, Last of the Summer Wine is a refreshing change that's meant to be light, easy, amusing - and a chance to see some stalwarts of British entertainment doing what they do best in pleasing surroundings.
Me? I love it .... and so does my 14 year old son. So there!!!!

Sorry to shake your gritty northern pride, but I think you'll find that Bill Owen was a Londoner.
