there were a lot of mine-workings in that area (the main Elm Tree Pit-Head was only at manor top....
So, it might have been a mine?
I remember the old, disused quarrry on manor oaks road, opposite where hyde park flats used to be. could it be linked with that?

Have to agree with you there. Sheffield is covered in shallow drift mine shafts, bell pits and adits that people rather fancifully imagine to be secret ancient tunnels.

Hi,
Was it a long tunnel or just a stone arch? If it was a stone arch it was a bridge that used carry Park Hill Lane over Hampton Street (later called Manor Oaks Road). When it was called Hampton Street it ran from Duke Street only as far as the bridge or just passed. Then it seemed to stopped as full blown street. Beyond was mostly allotments until you reached the Wybourne estate.
As a kid (late 1940's) I used to think it was great going up Park Hill Lane and crossing over this bridge in the middle of nowhere. I think it must have been built for access to the quarries up on Sky Edge and/or the coal mines up there.
