Hiya,

I'm trying to do a bit of research about what Sheffield people want from a night out.

The reason is, I have the opportunity to organise a mid week special club night (maybe a tuesday) and I wanted to see what people would want.

Obviously I'd want to make it a cheep as possible but I'd be unable to avoid door fees.

The sort of things I'd like to know is:-

Area of city most appropriate (even the club itself)
Times you'll be out till?
Budget?
Music?
Themes?
Gay friendly?
Student offers?

cheers guys x x x

cheap beer, esp during the week

Not fussed about music during the week, I tend to like music thats "in the background"

what about for a club though? - background music isn't really possible in nightclubs - pubs maybe!

Could you fill a club on Tuesday when all the students aren't here ? Even during term time no clubs are even half busy on tue.. lolz. Crystal and Flares are the only half busy places on tuesday, in and out of term time. Be careful and good luck :)

Tuesday is a real tough market, there's no substitute for experience in the PR game.. Been in sheffield 4 years and seen tuesday go from layed, to strutt to dirty stop out to god knows... between crystal, flares, leadmill, gc before xmas and the tuesday club i'd say the market is saturated.

Are you a bartender there?

Yep... you need to fill in an application form with proof that you work in a local bar. Then you are given a number, which is checked at the door.

the harley is a pub.

I wouldn't want anything for a tuesday night out, I have work on a wednesday.

What I want in general for a night out is somewhere quiet enough to talk, with enough seating to get one, don't care about price, a good range of beers/wines, pleasant bar staff, open late and no chavs or trouble.

Area of city most appropriate (even the club itself)
not too far toward the outskirts - somewhere easy to go onto from the bars - long distances in heels isnt great and not everyone will wanna pay for taxis if somewhere else is closer, and also close to kebabs/pizza/indian etc afterwards is good

Times you'll be out till?
Til close of course! - late as humanly possible!

Budget?
as low as poss but would rather pay a bit more for decent drinks than be ill due to the manky cheapo vodka they serve in leadmill

Music?
dance/RnB/funky house maybe? I love owt from kingdom to corp tho - as long as its got a beat and there is good atmophere then im happy. not a huge fan of 70s-80s but it wouldnt stop me goin somewhere

Themes?
if ya want. if is themed and same all time tho it could get bit boring and predictable.

Gay friendly?
i dont think there are really any that arent anyway(other than maybe niche/limit)

Student offers?
yes please! :D

Will this night run all through the year? as you may need to take that into consideration if competing with some student nights. Tuesdays sound good but beware you may be competeing with leadmill/tuesday club or whatever else is on but id be happy to try summat new.

Good luck with it

thanks everyone for your feedback - and hazel - thanks for your more in depth reply - very useful.

We still haven't decided exactly what night yet - I'm more inclined to go with a Tuesday as there's less competition with other nights.

I want to make it as cheep and FUN as possible concentrating on what people what, rather than what is dictated by fashion etc.

anyone else got any ideas?????? particulary like to hear from students.....!
Thanks

Personally I think mid week you've got the choice of going for cheap drink & cheese student night - but you need lot of PR backing to make it work as all the big clubs are fighting for the same market - or you go for something more specialised that doesnt get covered anywhere else (which is how the Tuesday club took off originally) - and to be honest unless your part of whatever scene your aiming at already - its very difficult to put on a convincing night - good luck anyway

Tuedays are all about 'Cargo'!! But people are right its very hard to get people through the door on Tuesday nights!!

while uni's are out then mondays or wednesdays could be good also as i dont think there is loads on those days? During uni i know kingdom runs vodka revolt student night and also wednesdays are hallam uni's big student/sports night 'any given wednesday' at kingdom which is very popular, plus corp have skool disco on wed's which is popular and 50p shot night on mon's but most these only run during term time.

when would you be hoping to launch? as if you are aiming to get students in then freshers week is your ideal time and most other clubs hand out flyers or offers etc outside the main doors of the uni's which is a good way to get peoples attention. If you lauch during summer you will need to make sure you market it really really well as if dont get much interest then it could have a reputation of being not very good by time uni's start back and you will have a job getting people in.

would you like an honest answer?

nah seriously im sure some people like it and i guess its not too bad, but dont think its fantastic either and is a bit out of the way. Maybe you should construct some sort of online survey that you could ask people to fill in to get specific feedback that you need?

In 14 years of going out in sheffield I've been in Empire bar once, and that was for about 10 minutes, i'm not sure we even bought a drink before walking out again.

to be honest, this kinda feedback is pretty good - with a survey it pretty one sided - I like to get a bit more info about various things - anything that anyone wants to tell me that they think would be useful.

Basically, I'm wanting to organise a night that will be happy, cheep, cheerful, busy and gain a reputation as 'the' place to be.

I can only do it if I know what people want. so if anyone has anything else that they think would be useful - I'd greatly appreciate it

It was the first bar I went to in Sheffield on a bar crawl and it was a good laugh. Went in another time a month or so later on a sat night and it scared the bejesus out of me! The peeps in there were a bit 'full on' lol and the music (RnB and commercial stuff) wasn't stuff I like.
