View Full Version : Red house pub??
madeofstone 21-06-2006, 19:25 what is happening with the pub? i went in about about and a year and half ago and there was some nice young irish guy working who served me a great pint, the place was busy and the music was good, then i went in a month after that and some scruffy midgit with a cap on was serving, the pub was dead, he gave me a pint of vinegar(was supposed to be adnams!!?) he farted and said he hated the pub. then it was closed any updates?
I have heard it has reopened, but can't confirm.
Was a magic pub, especially when Linda had it...

That would be Rory.

That would have been Martin. He did his best with the place, but he was ill and Punch Taverns were screwing him for everything they could without putting anything in...
As for the Red House I understand it has relatively recently reopned and closed again.
As far as I know its still shut but I am keeping my ear to the ground... :|
queen_bee 22-06-2006, 10:29 At has re-opened recently by a really nice couple and another lad who are trying to make a good go of it. I believe that they are trying to organise lots of different music nights on there and are building it up slowely.
Ousetunes 22-06-2006, 10:40 It used to be a great pub. Their Wards (not the rubbish produced today) was a beautiful, malty pint. They also served Kirby ale, an even stronger and maltier version of Wards - superb ale indeed.
It was in the Good Beer Guide for years on end, a little gem hidden away. Its demise is sad but predictable.
A visit to the Red House, then onto Fagan's and the Dog and Partridge - this is what going out was all about. Having said that, credit where it's due as you can now extend your real ale run to include the Kelham Tavern, Fat Cat and the Riverside.
Groan, I feel a drink coming on....,

Really? Interesting. :suspect:
When did you last hear it was open?
madeofstone 22-06-2006, 11:07 thanks for the info, i guess the best way to find out would be to call in? or phone if they have a number, it is a great little pub, itd b a shame if it stayed shut

It opened about a month ago. I believe at the moment it only opens in the evenings.

Hmmm, sounds like it is back open again then.
It was only open in the evenings for a long time, I think the kitchen facilities would need some work if they were to start doing food again at lunchtimes.
queen_bee 22-06-2006, 13:31 Yes i think that they are contracting the kitchen out to cater for food at lunchtimes
I went the other night (as I'd never been before and it was closed the last time I tried to visit). It needs a thorough steam cleaning or refurb. Probably no coincidence but the beer wasn't in very good shape either (warm and not very creamy handpulled Tetley's). So I won't be rushing back for a while. They had a reggae dj on who played some good stuff you don't often hear. Leaflet says they'll be having bands on too.
I hope it improves and succeeds . With all the flats going up there will be customers. Underneath the grime it does have some nice old features and deserves to be refurbed.
where is it?

Yep. Its being run by a couple, and another lad called Dave. One of the girls who rents a room from me in Sheffield is a regular in there, and sometimes helps out behind the bar. I was in there the other weekend (after the Germany v Costa Rica match)
By all accounts there are trying to get it back up and running with some live music and DJ nights, which can only be a good thing.
Whether or not this comes off or not depends on how well they market/advertise it, and how well people respond to it. For the average reveller, it may seem a bit off the beaten track.
my dad and linda used to run it,great pub,i miss it dearly, especialy george the dog

George the Dog = legend all in his own making. The Red House wasn't the same without him. How is your Dad and Linda, we still remember them so much. Me and my mate Russell, his brother Jarrod and sister Jessica used frequent the RH too, keep reminscing about the good times we had in there.
I might have to pop into the new RH, and check it out...but me being me will come out after a few; saying it ain't the same as the RH I used to know.
CockneyMafia 29-06-2006, 09:07 It needs a good clean for a start.
Maybe house doctor could pay a visit.
linda and mike are fine, linda has a house up in skyedge and is retired, but fine, george is keeping well too ;)
i doubt the RH will ever be the same
